Pay it forward, an idea which needs to be reborn

Updated on May 31, 2013

Pay it Forward

A few years ago a movie entitled, “Pay it Forward,” sparked a national trend. Everybody it seemed wanted to help others so they then could also help someone else. Like all trends do, “pay it forward,” sadly faded into being just a memory.

A recent car insurance commercial, sort of revived the whole idea of, “paying it forward,” by hinting that people should help others when they need help. Then that person should in turn help someone else and so on down the line.

While the idea of, pay it forward is all well in good it does lack one contributing factor, longevity. There was a driving force behind the movement, it was vogue at the time. Once the idea of,”paying it forward,” started to ware off the common belief among everyone started to become, “if they're not doing it why should I?”

There are still many people out there who, “pay it forward,” but there needs to be more. The reasons why we need more people to step forward and help are obvious.

There are many people out there who need a hand up

People are hurting because of the economy and layoffs a little bit of help by one person can spark a whole movement. Years ago there was a little in Philadelphia who came up with the idea of giving the homeless blankets. His idea sparked more people to jump in and help.

There are many people who just need a shoulder to lean on

Paying it forward does not always mean going to extremes, sometimes it just means being. Like the store clerk who takes the time to listen to the woes of the customers and then responds with kindness. Such as in the time when a customer's husband died, the clerk was there to help with words and a shoulder to cry on.

Pay It Forward

Do you pay it forward on a daily basis?

See results

There are those who just need a few words of encouragement

Words they say can build people which is true. A person who “Pays it Forward,” is always ready to offer a few words of encouragement, a few words of advice or a few words of love.

Paying it forward is not just a fad, it should become a lifestyle. Maybe if a few people started once again to help out a few people and so on and so on, the world may become a much better place.

I agree because we live in a world of instant gratification. We receive things and services so fast that we forget to pay forward. Great hub to remind us all. Thank you.

I was hoping people would catch onto love as the basis for "pay it forward,". Jesus was also asked, "who is my neighbor," and He answered in my paraphrase, "everyone you come in contact with." So pay it forward needs to be Christian's lifestyle.

Hello Whittwrites, Paying it forward is a great concept but it eventually wanes away a) for the reason you mentioned (they are not doing it why should I) but mainly because it is born of an idea that is a fad, rather than a love which is born of the heart for our fellow man and for God. If the idea was born of love, from the heart, it would not be discontinued and we would pay it forward for no other reason than that it is what is desired of us by God and what we are commended for, by Jesus ....'for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in' (Matt: 25: 35)....'Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to me.'(Matt: 25: 40) Thought provoking hub. God Bless.

Nice Hub Whittwrites, I think the world would be a much better place if everyone lived by this motto. I actually love the movie "Pay it Forward", Kevin Spacey is one of my favorite actors. Thumbs up on your Hub.
