How To Plan A Beach Themed Wedding
Have you always wanted a wedding on the beach, but you don't live anywhere near a beach? You can still have a wedding with the beach theme. With the right decorations, food and music, you can give your wedding a beach atmosphere.
If you happen to be lucky enough to live near a beach, you may be able to find one that rents out for weddings.
Another option is to rent a vacation home that is on the beach. Be sure to check with the owner to see if you will be able to have your wedding on their beach. You may have to have permits to do so.
If you don't live near a beach you can still create an atmosphere of the beach for your wedding.
There are many options when it comes to beach themed décor. You can find web sites that specialize in beach décor. But you can also use your imagination and come up with many ideas that you can create yourself.
Creating a Beach Atmosphere
If you are having your wedding on an actual beach, you won't have much trouble creating an atmosphere. Just a few decorations will be necessary.
If you don't have a beach, then you will need a few more decorations to create the atmosphere.
The archway pictured above can be purchased, but you can also build it yourself for a lot less. You can purchase the gauze and Starfish at Hobby Lobby. You will need someone who can build the arch.
Beach Wedding Decorations
The white wooden folding chairs look amazing, but if your local party rental store doesn't offer this type of chair, at least see if they have white metal folding chairs. You can purchase the rope and more starfish to decorate the backs or sides of the chairs.
I found this size of Starfish at Hobby Lobby for $4.99 and if you use the 40% off one item coupon (they offer every week in their add) you will only pay $3.00. You would simply have to buy one at a time, to get the 40% off. You could make these great chair decorations for about $5.00 each.
It might be a bit much if you decorate all your chairs. I would suggest either the front row, or better yet the aisle chairs and only every other aisle. This will give your ceremony a great outdoor, beach feeling without being overwhelming.
Table Centerpiece For Beach Themed Wedding
Centerpieces for a beach themed wedding are super easy to make yourself and very inexpensive. This centerpiece would cost about $8.00
What You Will Need:
- Glass Bowl or Vase
- Sand (natural or colored)
- Seashells in various sizes
- Candle (preferably flameless)
Pour desired color of sand in bowl about 1/3 full. Place candle in the middle. Arrange various sized seashells around candle. Place bowl on mirror and arrange larger seashells around the mirror (hotglue if you wish)
Goldfish Bowl Centerpiece
In place of flowers for your ceremony décor, you can place seashell decorated lanterns along the aisle, or at the front on either side of your archway. Maybe larger ones at the front and some smaller ones on the aisle, about every couple of rows.
These can be made for a lot less than purchased premade. You will find these type of lanterns can be purchased at Hobby Lobby when they are 50% off, for a pretty affordable price. Just hot glue some seashells, raffia and maybe some kind of greenery on the tops.
These lanterns can serve a dual purpose and save you lots of money. When the ceremony is over you can assign someone to transfer the lanterns to your reception. They will look awesome as a centerpiece on the guest tables.
In lieu of confetti, you can spread small seashells on the guest tables around the centerpiece. Also add a few to the banquet tables.
For even more atmosphere you should hang some flower or seashell lights around the room. The more the better. Add a few strings to your banquet tables and drape some across the front of the head table.
Beach Wedding Invitations
If your having a beach themed wedding, wouldn't it be appropriate to have your wedding invitation arrive as a message in a bottle. You can buy a kit that includes everything you need to make a message in a bottle invitation.
Alternately you can buy the supplies at you local craft store and put them together yourself. You will need:
- Bottles with Corks - bulk at Party supply store
- Sand - Hobby Lobby sells any color you want in Wedding Supply
- Small Sea Shells - Party or Hobby Store. Bulk, very affordable
- Rafia - Tie around neck of bottle
- Parchment Paper - Grocery store
- Sealing Wax - Seal cork for shipment
If you have a small guest list the kit might be cheaper. If your list is more extensive, making these yourself will probably save you money.
The postage to send these cute little bottles is going to cost you more of course. So if it doesn't fit into your budget, you might want to consider a traditional invitation with a few seashell pictures and maybe some raffia, tied into a bow. If you are able to hand deliver a good number of your invitations, this is really an impressive way to go.
Be sure to tie a ribbon or something around the rolled up invitation and tie a small piece of thread through the invitation, to make it easier to pull it out of the bottle.
Unity Sand Ceremony
Recently unity sand ceremonies have began to gain popularity. A sand ceremony would be very appropriate for this type of wedding. This symbolic ceremony would take the place of the traditional unity candle ceremony.
As with the Unity Candle ceremony, the Unity Sand Ceremony is a symbolic blending of two peoples lives. There are 3 containers, the Brides, the Groom's and the middle one where you will blend the two. The Brides container will have one color of sand, the Groom's container will have a different color of sand and the middle container has no sand, as you will be combining the Bride and Groom's sand into it.
Because of the growing popularity of this ceremony, your officiant may already know how to perform this ceremony. If not you will have to explain it to him or her.
The officiant will explain the symbolism of the two lives being combined into one. He will ask the Groom to pour a small amount of his sand into the middle bottle. He will then ask the Bride to pour a small amount of her sand into the middle bottle. Then he will ask both to pour their sand simultaneously.
You can purchase the kit at Etsy, Hobby Lobby, Ebay or Amazon. You can also make your own for a lot less. All you need is:
- 3 Glass containers (Hobby Store)
- 2 different colors of sand (Hobby Lobby)
- Tray of some kind (Hobby Store)
- Raffia (Hobby Store)
- Small seashells (Hobby Store)
- His & Hers Labels (Optional)
Because there are no candles involved, this ceremony can be performed inside or outside with no problems.
You will be left with a memory of your unity, that you can display in your home, to remind of your promise to each other.
Beach Bride Wedding Dress
There are some really beautiful dresses for the beach themed wedding. You will find you don't have to spend a fortune for your dress when you are doing a beach themed wedding.
A simple white flowing sun dress made from taffeta or a gauze material, is beautiful and appropriate for your summer beach wedding.
In place of a veil, you can wear a simple ring of flowers, a seashell hair clip or a single Orchid clipped into your swept up, or braided hair. Amazon also has a really cool seashell garter, that will go great with you whole beach theme.
Depending on what you wear in your hair, you can match your earrings appropriately. A pair of rhinestone starfish or beautiful white seashells will finish off your ensemble. If you choose to go with a ring of flowers on your head, you might want to go with flower earrings.
Beach Wedding Brides Shoes
Depending on your venue and what you are comfortable with, there are a few different options for the Brides footwear.
If you are having an actual beach wedding, you might want to wear the barefoot beach sandals, which are very dainty and appropriate.
If you are just doing a beach theme, but will be inside on a hard floor you will probably want a bit more on your feet.
Beach Wedding Bouquets, Boutonniere's & Corsages
Arranging the flowers for your beach wedding can be one of the most enjoyable parts of planning your ceremony. Beach weddings give you the chance to be a bit more creative. You are not limited to flowers, you can incorporate some or all seashells into your flower arranging.
The Bridal Bouquet can be very interesting when you add some seashells to the arrangement. The bouquet can be made from all seashells, or just a few placed strategically among the flowers.
Seashell bouquets are becoming more popular these days, so they are easier to find. There are many choices and colors available.
You may find what your looking for at Amazon or Ebay. They have several to choose from.
Etsy is also a great place to find, one of a kind hand made seashell bouquets. For the Brides bouquet and also the Bridesmaids.
How To Make A Seashell Bridal Bouquet
Boutonniere's for your Groom and Groomsmen can be purchased on Amazon or Ebay. A simple starfish with a pin glued to the back is a very nice choice and can be easily made instead of purchased.
Also providing seashell corsages for the mothers and grandmothers of the Bride and Groom will make them feel important on your special day. These can also be purchased, but would be much more inexpensive to make yourself.
Just buy several different sizes and types of small seashells and some ribbon. Tie a bow with the ribbon and hot glue it to a corsage pin. Then arrange and hot glue the shells to the ribbon.
Pins, ribbon and bags of small seashells are available at hobby stores.
Beach Wedding Men's Attire
For a beach themed wedding, the groom does not necessarily have to dress formally. A nice linen shirt and pants is perfect for this type of wedding. Beige, white or some kind of pastel would look best.
Your Groomsman should dress similarly. If you want to dress the Groomsman more casually, they can wear shorts that are appropriate, in color, length and style.
For footwear any kind of sandal will look nice. If you prefer an enclosed shoe, a nice light loafer would work also.
Beach Wedding Bridesmaid Dress
Dresses for your Bridesmaids should be fairly easy to come by. Any kind of Sun Dress will work. After you have chosen the colors for your wedding, searching for sun dresses will be a fun and easy venture.
When my daughter got married, she chose Hot Pink. It was Prom season so we had a large selection to choose from. Each of her Bridesmaids wore a Hot Pink dress, but they were all different styles and lengths.
Having your Bridesmaids wear various styles and shades of the color that you have chosen can be so much more interesting, than everyone wearing the exact same thing. It is completely up to your own taste, as to which length or style you want for your Bridesmaids.
You may even choose to go with more than one color. If you choose more than one color, then you could have a half your Bridesmaids wear one color and the other half wear the other color.
You have to take into consideration your friends body type when choosing a style. This is why we ended up going with a couple of different styles for my daughters friends. Depending on their body type, they each had a style that looked better on them.
Beach Flower Girl Dress
Your little Flower Girl will look adorable dressed in a linen and lace sundress.
Braided hair or swept up in a bun, either way would look beautiful. A ring of flowers in her hair, or a seashell hairclip will complete her outfit.
A little white glitter sprinkled in her hair would make her sparkle when she's walking out ahead of you.
She can wear matching sandals or some kind of simple closed toed shoe. A seashell necklace would also be appropriate.
As she carries her little basket of flowers down the aisle, she will capture the hearts of all your guests.
You can find Beach themed wedding accessories for your Flower Girl on Amazon or Ebay. Etsy is also a great source of One of a kind, Flower girl dresses.
If you don't find what your looking for, you can also create your own. Buy a satin or linen covered baske,t with a handle and some appropriately sized seashells, at your local hobby store. Glue the seashells on wherever you like.

Beach Themed Wedding Favors
Beach themed wedding favors for your guests can be found in many places.
- Party Stores
- Hobby Lobby
If your trying to save money, making your own favors for this style of wedding shouldn't be a problem. Just Google "Beach Party Favors" to get some ideas and then purchase the items and make your own.
Simply gluing magnets onto the backs of seashells, wrapping in cellophane and tying with a strand of raffia, would make a nice inexpensive wedding favor.
Purchase small glass or plastic bottles at a party or hobby store and fill with candy. Tie a raffia bow around the neck.
Sea Shell Topper
Beach Themed Wedding Cake
The centerpiece of your wedding banquet is your cake. The wedding cake is not only the yummy desert that tops off your banquet, it also serves as part of the décor. A beach themed wedding cake will set the mood of your banquet.
Your wedding cake can be decorated in many ways. Of course you will want to incorporate sea shells into the design, but there will be many other choices you will want to consider when choosing the design of your cake.
A simple search on Google or Pinterest will provide you with many interesting examples that you can bring to your bakery for their consideration.
You will be able to purchase the décor for the theme that you choose on Amazon, Ebay or Etsy. You might check with your bakery to make sure they don't have similar items available, before you purchase them.
You should print pictures of several cakes you are interested in and bring them with you to your appointment with your bakery. They will then give you an idea of what they can offer that is similar.
If they don't have the décor that you are looking for, you can offer to purchase the items for them to use on your beach themed cake.
Depending on where your wedding venue is, you may or may not need to provide your own plates, cups and silverware.
A nice pale Blue or Sea Green would be appropriate for your décor.
You will probably want to use plastic silverware and cups.
I found these personalized Beach themed wedding napkins on Etsy. What a cool idea.
Another suggestion to spruce up the cake table, is to drape a string of flower or seashell lights around the cake table. Also spread some white or colored sand and some small seashells around the table. You can purchase jars of sand, the same kind used for the sand ceremony at a party or hobby store.
You may want to add accessories, such as a cake knife and server, and toasting glasses for the Bride and Groom.
Music For Your Beach Wedding
The music for your beach wedding can be anything from soft instrumental, to reggae, to something more current. It is entirely up to you.
For the actual ceremony you probably want something a little more traditional to play during your walk down the aisle. Unless of course, you find a nice instrumental that has a bit of a Tropical feel to it.
The recessional walk after the ceremony would be fun accompanied by something like Bob Marley's Three Little Birds or One Love.
I would suggest some soft tropical music during the dinner portion of your wedding. It will create a nice seaside atmosphere for your guests.
The music for your reception is a whole different matter. Your guests might not feel comfortable dancing to instrumental music. There are some great CD's of steel drum and Caribbean type music that would be fun to dance to.
You can always play more mainstream music and then throw in a little Bob Marley or Jimmy Buffet every once in a while, just to keep the atmosphere going.
I think a great song that would be appropriate for the Processional is "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole.
