Planning The Perfect Prom Night

How to choose a dress

Choose a dress that complements your body type. For example if you are a person that has small bust you could choose a dress that has a built-in bustier. If you are a person with a wide mid section, you could choose a dress that makes your waist look smaller. Choose a color and fabric that accents your skin tone. If you are having a dress made, choose a fabric for formal gowns that does not pick up on water and grease stains easily like some satins do.

How to choose a tuxedo

Choose a tuxedo that works well and accents the dress that your date will be wearing. For example, if your date is wearing a royal blue dress then a white tuxedo would not be a good choice. A black tuxedo is the best choice in most cases because of the possibility of picking up stains. Make sure your cummerbund and tie matches your prom dates dress. If possible you could take a piece of the material that her dress is being made out of and match the material with your cummerbund. If you have problems finding the match, try to see if you can have them both made by the person that makes her dress or from someone else of your choice.

Choosing the right shoes

For the female, choose shoes that are very comfortable and well fitted. You could take a pair of footie socks, for dancing if you feel you may have a problem with your feet hurting or a nice pair of low heel shoes that complements your dress. You may want to keep the extra pair of shoes in the car to keep from having to carry them around with you.

For the males, it's really pretty easy. Most of the time shoes actually come with the tuxedo or you could purchase a pair. Make sure your shoes fit properly and remember if you are renting shoes to take good care of them.

Choosing the right purse

Your purse should be small enough to carry as a clutch. You can purchase a purse that looks well with your dress or have one made. Things you may want to carry in your purse:

car keys, touch-up make up, a small mirror, tampons if you need them, a cell phone, credit or debit card, and or money, and a small comb. *Never leave your purse unattended.

Choosing the right jewelry

Make sure your jewelry is not so large that it takes away from your dress. Make sure that you are wearing accessories that work well with formal wear. It would be to your advantage to choose jewelry that is not too long and your earrings should have backs that are snug enough that you won't lose one. You may want to take an extra pair just in case this happens. Only small amounts of jewelry are needed to accent your dress. Example: two bracelets at the most. One small necklace is just fine. One or two rings is just enough. You don't want to look like you have over done it.

Choosing the right corsage

Gentlemen this one is for you! Fresh flowers are great but if you can not purchase a fresh corsage, purchase a nice artificial corsage that complements the colors in her dress. Make sure that the corsage fits her wrist, and is not too big. You could get a florist to make one or someone that you know. *Remember not to leave the corsage at home. :)

Choosing the right hair style

Of course the hairstyle you choose should complement your dress. Try not to choose a style that you know will not sustain a lot of dancing and something that you will constantly have to move out of your face. If you have flowers or hair pins in your hair make sure that they are very secure. You may want to put extra pins in your purse. Choose something age appropriate, stylish and trendy.

Choosing the right restaurant

When I went to the prom my junior year, I went stag with my girlfriends and even though we had a buffet style dinner planned for us at the prom, as young girls we wanted to do something a little special. So our restaurant of choice was Red Lobster. If you choose to do this, choose a restaurant that is elegant enough for your special night. Make sure you take advantage of cloth napkins so that you won't stain your dress, and try not to order anything that will spill on your dress. The same thing goes for a couple that chooses to go out to eat for prom.

Choosing the perfect nail color

Make sure you choose a polish that is neutral or something that matches the color of your dress. French manicures work well at times like this. If you choose a color that matches your dress, make sure that it is the exact same color as your dress. Your nail polish should be the same on your hands as on your feet.

Taking pictures and videos of your special night

Have pictures and a video taken of just about everything you can. From the time your date arrives to getting in the car. You should take pictures of you and friends and family members. Try to get into as many pictures as possible at the prom because your friends can always give you copies. Think about making a prom scrapbook and what kind of pictures you may want in that book. It's been a long time since I had a prom night, but I still have those beautiful memories tucked away in my photo album.

This is a one and only night to remember. Planning your prom well ahead of time can make that night even more exciting. This night will carry memories that will last a lifetime. The memories can be shared with your friends and possibly even with your own children. Make sure the night is full of memories you won't mind sharing.
