Plenty of Fish Dating Site POF

Updated on September 6, 2014

What is Plenty of Fish?

There's plenty of fish in the sea at POF! Perhaps you've heard of the internet dating service called Plenty of Fish? It's a free dating website for people of all ages and from all over the world. The Plenty of fish dating site (POF) allows you to set up your own free dating profile and then find matches based on a set of compatibility questions you answer. Or you can choose to simply browse based on zip code, religious preference, ethnic background and several other preferences, just like you can on Myspace. The difference here is that Myspace is generally more of a social website while Plenty of fish is a dating site. In other words while many people try to find themselves dates on Myspace, often times the people they contact might not be there for dating. On POF you'll know that at least the people you contact are somewhat serious about dating and open to messages about it. On this webpage you'll gain some insight into how Plentyoffish was created, how easy it is to join and set up a profile and some of the pro's and cons of the dating site!

Plenty of Fish Creation

The free dating website Plentyoffish was started by a young man in his late 20's named Markus Frind, a graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology.  Back in 2003, Markus was learning the programming language known as ASP.NET.  In order to learn this language, he chose to create an online dating site, and it became quite popular in his home country of Canada.  Due to the great effects of word of mouth and viral marketing, Plenty of Fish quickly expanded to the UK, Australia, and the United States.

Markus wanted to make this a free dating website and in order to do so he needed it to generate enough revenue to pay for itself.  To do this he implemented Google Adsense ads on his site and due to the high level of traffic the site enjoyed, it quickly started producing nice-sized checks for Markus, to the tune of millions of dollars a year.  What's most amazing about the story, is Markus (CEO and Founder of Plentyoffish Media Inc) was able to design and run the site pretty much by himself and with the help of his girlfriend.  He enjoyed 10 hour workweeks all while making a nice bit of income, and while working from home.  Isn't that the true dream of most entrepreneurs?

To date Markus has been profiled in plenty of magazine, website, blog and TV news interviews based on the phenomenal success of a free version of a dating website which competes very well with paid dating sites like

Joining POF & Your Dating Profile

As previously mentioned, dating site is free to join and use as a basic member. There's been a recently added paid component of the site, but using the free version will be suitable and cost-effective for most individuals. To join you simply head to the website and set up your dating profile. You'll be asked for similar things as you are on other social media websites like Facebook or Myspace, such as your date of birth, city/state, body type, ethnic background and then several preference type questions. These include whether or not you have a car (usually helpful in dating), if you have children, if you want children, whether you smoke, do drugs and how often you drink. This helps other members find you based on their preferences!

One of the keys to creating a successful POF dating profile at Plenty of Fish is to make sure you've uploaded at least 2 recent pictures of yourself. Three to five pictures is ideal, because having just one picture on a dating website like POF could really creep out other members. You want to portray yourself as a real person, and not someone using just 1 fake or outdated picture of yourself. Consider using pictures of yourself from recent outings with friends, or on vacation, or doing other fun activities, in addition to a good headshot and as made famous in Napoleon Dynamite, the "full body shot". The object is to let other members know you have style, and also to show who you really are. There's no need to deceive members because it will only hurt you in the dating game.

There's a section where you can list out your various interests such as surfing, baseball, movies, traveling, skydiving, cooking or whatever your hobbies and interests may be. It's important to have some interests listed here, otherwise people may think you simply watch TV 24 hours a day. Consider adding up to 10 interests at least, but don't go overboard with too much info. You basically want to give other members a glimpse of your hobbies and interests but not tell your life story on your profile.

Your profile will also have space to write the infamous "About Me" essay. It's true not many people like to write about themselves, so some tend to write barely anything. Or they write "I hate writing about myself" or "I never know what to say". That's not the best idea. Other people love to talk about themselves and end up writing a novel. Not a good idea either, because rambling could expose you. It's up to you how detailed you are, because the better your description is the more likely your chances for online dating success. Write about your ideal romantic partner, or what qualities you might be seeking in one, as well as some interesting tidbits about yourself that the opposite sex would find attractive.

There's also a section for you to describe your ideal date. It's up to you to be funny, accurate or choose not to write anything here. It doesn't seem like this section would really make or break anyone.

Once you've got your profile tailored to your liking, you're ready to start browsing and finding other interesting people! You can view their profiles, send them a message and see what happens..It's up to you to find those fish, cast your line and try to reel them in!

Pros & Cons of POF Dating Site

The alternatives to Plenty of Fish are the various paid dating sites you see on TV all the time like eHarmony and Another site is OkCupid, which is also free but its interface and ads make the site a much slower experience than POF is.

As with most social-type websites, there will always be the good and bad. Plenty of Fish is no exception, so here's some of the notable Pro's and Cons.

Pros of Plenty of Fish:

- Free dating site

- Many other members

- Simple interface to use

- Ability to add Imeem music or videos

- Ads don't overwhelm or slow down site

Cons of Plenty of Fish:

- Potentially fake profiles

- Lack of profile design capability

- Poor customer service (members help members in a forum)

A few other words of wisdom for you about this revolutionary dating site. Plenty of Fish offers the ability to block other members from messaging you, but not necessarily viewing your profile. The site used to offer an IM feature but that was removed because it was slowing down the site and members don't really seem to miss it (according to the CEO). You earn points on POF based on your use of the site and other criteria, and those basically can be used to send things like images of alcoholic drinks, teddy bears, puppies and steaks. Possibly a more creative use of points is in the works.

The site also offers members the ability to "favorite" other members and to rate their pictures, which seems like nothing more than a popularity contest, similar to those on sites like While it can provide some social proof that a person is interesting, fun or valid, it can also show that a profile with hot pictures and little text gets hundreds of favorites regardless of whether or not there's a real person behind it.

Overall, POF is one of the best free internet online dating site services, unlike no other, as it is simple to use and potentially meet interesting new friends and possible romantic connections in your local area.  It may be at the very top as the best no cost personals website. As always when using a socially-based internet site exercise caution when meeting strangers, but with this site you'll find the cliché true that there's "plenty of fish in the sea"!

Rosi - Have a friend create an account and view your profile. If you see that he/she viewed you then you know it is active! It should remember your profile data - who you are looking for. Is everything else still there?

I would strongly advise people on POF to NOT request a profile review on the forums. The people who give "advice" are extremely rude and will tear you to shreds if you disagree with anything they say. Also, anything you post CANNOT be deleted and is viewable to anyone on the internet, not just registered users. If you object to anything they delete your account.

plenty of fish tends to be 22 year old women with 3 kids. there's some decent "catches" on plenty of fish though. problem with free sites people aren't invested at all so people setup sites and never check them again after initially logging on or some women setup profiles just for an ego boost and no intention of really doing any dating off the site. ok cupid tends to have a pretty decent crowd both looks wise as well as being normal, having your life together type people. its a better setup and layout to the site as well imho.

i have met some great people off plenty of fish however i have a few problems with it, its so quick and easy to sign up and its free so you have many people who start a profile and never check it again. people on pof like to disguise themselves bad pictures, big sunglasses, hats, etc. we want to see you not a profile photo of you in big sunglasses a hat that you made into a negative or sophia tone in photoshop. pof tends to be kinda ghetto and white trash people. ALOT of women on there have 3 kids by their early 20's. the profiles are very short there's basically only two sections to them. even a free site like okcupid has a much more in depth profile. pof seems more about hookups for people who don't want to go to craigslist casual encounters than real relationships. real realtionships as far as free sites is more likely to happen on okcupid or for pay sites match or eharmony

I have been on POF for a little over a year (on and off). I don't have anything negative to say about the site per se. The quality of men on POF is sometimes all over the place, but for the most part the men I have come into contact with were "normal". They weren't necessarily for me, but they weren't bad people. I have encountered the issue of men posting fake pics or pics of themselves from 10yrs ago. The best advice I can give to men and woman using POF or any dating site is be careful, be honest (but don't give out too much information too soon) and be yourself. Meeting people online gives you a freedom that maybe you don't feel you have when meeting someone at a bar or sporting event, etc. Online you really can be yourself. If the person reading your profile doesn't like what he or she is reading... move on... no harm, no foul. The worst thing you can do is say you're something you're not or post a pic of someone else or of yourself 10yrs ago. If you do meet that person... they're going to see that you aren't the person in the pic and even if they are attracted to the real you, they are going to see you as dishonest and manipulative. POF is what you make it. Yea it's free and I do believe in the saying, "You get what you pay for", but I also believe it is nice to have a free site where singles can go and meet new people. I have friends who have been on and they paid for their membership and still ran into similar problems.. men/women only wanting sex, or meeting someone who was too clingy, wanting to rush into something serious, or really didn't want a relationship in the first place. Use your brain, not any other body part that may be lacking some much needed attention. POF is an alright site. I haven't met my Mr. Right, but that's because I won't settle for just anything. I know what I want and what I am able to give.. He's out there.

POF is actually better than Match. I had a horrible experience on that site. Two men asked me for money (scammers) and I have met many aggressive, mean men who were verbally abusive. Honestly POF is much better. Ok so the "freaks" are more obvious; however, they are more "disguised" on Match. Eventually they all come out in the wash. As with anything be careful. Simply put,not a fan of Match AT ALL but that was my experience.

I am not on POF at present, I decided to stop last year because I became very busy with chuch, life, new grandchild, and other thing, but prior to that I had met a very nice gentlman who actually only lived about 12 miles away and we did date for about one year, he and I were both exactly what we said, it just didn't end up that the feelings went further than frends, but he was honest and sincere and I met two other men locally who were pleasant but wanted to get serious too quickly but they were pleasant. I have nothing bad to say about POF. Any site is dangerous or anyone can be foolish if you are not choosy and if you are desperate or if you give away too much info. Be mature when you use any site, that is the basic good advice for anyone. Use common sense. Never, ever, just trust someone from what they say over the internet Don't give your real name, do not give your phone number and if you decide to meet, go to a place not far from you in the day that is well known and make sure he leaves first and let no one follow you. I met my friend about five times at the same place and would not give him my pesonal number or my work place until I felt like I was getting to know who he was and I also checked out his back ground. As I said, just don't be foolish, there are some normal people out there though.

pof is just a sight, that attracts the slime balls on the earth. It is used for all tipes of cons and theaves.. trust me they will get what they want and do what it takes to get at your money.I have found that the men and wemon must be working together in the scamming and con games. you can try to report them because you know who they are, you will get deleted. the scammers and cons get to continue on pof and work there scamming. got to love the whay that sight works. If you play with pof you will get burned.

POF has been the only sight that was honest with me. All others have professed things they can not and do not deliver! I have spent countless hours setting up profiles on other sights only to later be charged or scammed. POF has never done this to me. It delivers what it claims to!

    • profile image

      Stephany 7 years ago

Just as with any other sight POF is what you make of it. Be careful, use your best judgment and be honest with your date. I have been on for a long time and the worst experience I had was with a person who did have a prestigious career, money and enough confidence to control anyone. Not a humble note to him. Paid sight or not we all take chances.

I have been on POF and I have met a doctor who was also a famous psychiatrist who then turned into a forensic specialist and had a very successful business. Too bad he had a hard time spelling simple words, ha ha.

I also met a Vice President of a major company, who owned 3 houses, one in Chicago, one on Long Beach, and another on some lake in Michigan. He worked 4-12 and was not allowed to receive phone calls at work and only talked through Skype, ha ha.

Must I say more about POF?

Be aware and stay away from this web site; it really does attract the mentally ill, the time-wasters and the scammers, most people on POF aren’t serious and this site taciturnly encourages the slime-balls of the Human race via dodgy advertising which POF must make a fortune from. I’m also certain that I picked up a Win32 Confliker virus from a fake profile of which there were many!!

All in all POF attracts the lowest common denominator, people who use POF don’t value it because they don’t pay anything for it, it’s open to abuse and the owner ‘Markus’, whom whomever he is making too much money from it. STAY AWAY I met nobody decent, maybe I should have stayed on a while longer, however how much longer do you need when you know you’ve been conned. STAY AWAY FROM PLENTY OF FISH.

Yup it's free. But you get what you pay for.

It attracts the lowest common denominator of online dating.

People aren't serious there, attracts more than the usual proportion of time-wasters and bozos. Defintely the kiddie pool of online dating sites.

I just go for the forums, which are interesting.

Match's prices and manipulative behavior is annoying, but the quality of the profiles is worth it.

I love online dating, but actually I'm not a fan of this site. From a woman's point of view - I'm seeking an educated clean-cut man, and stated this when I set up a profile on POF. The first gentleman (?) who responded said he worked packing shelves in a supermarket and liked to wear Nappies in his spare time! Because it's a free to use site, from my experience there are quite a lot of wierdo's on the site just looking for sexual favours no matter what you write in your profile! I also noticed many fake photo profiles - One guy used a photo of Johnathan Ryhs Meyers - Luckily I knew who this actor was, otherwise I'm sure I would have been horrified had I agreed to a date with him! This is my experience with Australian guys using POF. I'm sure there are some genuine people using this site looking for love (Like me) but the weirdo's seem to outweigh the genuine one's by a long shot on POF.

I met my bf on POF and before that I had never been on a dating site, but we talked for quite a while on there and then started meeting and then dating, first it was more of a friend basis kind of thing. and it graduated from there. Now we live together and are very much happy with where things have gone and are going. POF is a wonderful site! I am thankful for it! i now have no need for it and when i deleted my account it asked why i no longer wanted it and i said because i had found someone! it feels so good to finally say that!
