Popular Gifts for a Wife

Updated on March 10, 2015

The Gift Giving Secrets Every Husband Should Know

Gentlemen, you should realize getting a gift for your wife is not about you. If you're a sensitive soul, you already know this. For those remaining not-so-sensitive men lovingly referred to as "clods" (you know who you are), finding a perfect gift for the wife may be a major, seemingly insurmountable challenge. The good news for the "clods" is that finding a popular gift for a wife doesn't have to be difficult. A good rule of thumb to follow here is to remember to give her a gift she wants, not what you want to give her.

In Gift Giving, as in Medicine - First, Do No Harm

I remember a friend of mine from college who just adored his wife. They were both very happy until the first Christmas they were together as man and wife. He decided to give her a sewing machine as a gift. Just one problem - she didn't know, or care to learn how to sew. The man really did think he was doing the right thing. He sincerely thought getting her a sewing machine would provide an incentive for her to learn how to sew her own dresses, drapes, curtains and all sorts of pretty things for their home. After almost 50 years of marriage, that sewing machine remains in perfect, never-used condition at the back of their closet and my friend never made that mistake again.

Happy Husbands Know How it's Done

Men who are happily living with their wives know a secret - happy wife, happy life. It's a sort of mantra quietly repeated by the millions of happy husbands who know how to treat their wives, especially when it comes to gifts. If you're "gift challenged," find another woman who can assist you in choosing the right gift. Do not make a late night mall run looking for a gift the night before. If your wife is important, if your relationship is important then take some time to do your homework and plan.

How Your Wife Looks at Gift Giving

All women are different and if you have been married for any length of time, you have figured this out. For some women, a gift from the heart is more desirable than anything. For others, the expense laid out for the gift gives it more meaning. Some women just want to know they are appreciated, others need validation through expensive jewelry, a new car or pricey vacations. None of these are right or wrong or better - they're just different. You know your wife best and you know what she will like in a gift. Most women love to get gifts that come from the heart. - this is always a good place to start when considering a gift.

Gifts From Your Heart Are Most Treasured by Wives

By far, most wives will likely appreciate getting a gift from you that is from your heart. For those guys who don't know what this means, these gifts are typically created by you using one of your many talents. A drawing, handmade item, poem or even a song that you wrote specifically for your wife all make wonderful gifts. Gifts of your time, energy and effort will also be favorably received. These may not cost much monetarily but will require you to dig down deep, get in touch with your feelings for her and make a real effort.

Top 5 Popular Gifts for a Wife

These are gifts that are going to cost you some money so be ready to shell out big bucks for these gifts. Remember, just because you can spend a lot of money does not mean the gift has to be impersonal. Add your own personal touches to these ideas and make them uniquely yours.

1) Shopping Spree

This is a total "no-brainer" for husbands, especially when you just don't know what to get for your wife. Now don't cheap this one - make it worth her while. Get a VISA gift card and load it up with all you can afford. Then tell her that she can go out and spruce up or buy an entire new wardrobe. Now tell me, what wife could be disappointed with a gift like that? Add a personal touch by arranging for her to go with one or two of her friends. Make arrangements to meet your wife later that evening in one of her new outfits at your favorite romantic restaurant. Add a limo to the mix and it's a party!

Guide to Buying Jewelry

2) Jewelry

Hey, if budget is not a concern then go all out. After all, diamonds are indeed a girls best friend. You should find out if your wife has sensitive ears which means she may not be able to wear silver earrings. Silver jewelry items are best for everyday wear due to their light weight and tendency to be less flashy than gold. If you buy jewelry with any sort of a gemstone, get ready to lay out some serious cash. Don't forget pearls always add a touch of sophistication. You should know if your wife likes big rings, understated silver, dangling earrings, etc. If you don't know what type of jewelry she likes, look in her jewelry box.

3) Once-in-a-Lifetime Trip

Some friends of ours just returned from China last week. All of their kids have finally moved out and started families of their own. She had always wanted to go to China. I don't know why, it really doesn't matter. He didn't particularly want to go but he arranged for them to be there for several weeks and see everything. I'm sure it cost a pretty penny, but according to her, it was definitely worth it. This husband gets a gold star! Whereas your wife always wanted to go? Maybe plan a second honeymoon or just a weekend stay in a major city at a very nice hotel.

4) Spa/Massage Package

Men may never fully understand the spa thing, but some women absolutely love it. A spa treatment says you are cared for and coddled luxuriously. If your wife works and/or takes care of the kids all day, nothing would be more welcome than a day at the spa. Make sure you get the deluxe package with all the options. Check with the staff at the spa you are considering for all the details.

The biggest advantage to a spa is stress reduction, relief from the everyday pressures of life, soothing tired and sore muscles and bestowing a sense of feeling better about oneself. Staying at a spa can help your wife feel better for the time she is there and for some time in the future. Typical spa packages can run from just a few hundred to several thousand dollars (USD)and can be a simple one-day experience or a longer stay of a week or longer.

5) Housekeeping Gift Certificate

If your wife spends a lot of time keeping house, then this is going to be a very popular gift. Your wife may actually enjoy keeping house but there are definitely going to be times when this gift is going to be helpful. If you plan to buy her one of the aforementioned gifts like a trip, spa or shopping spree with dinner, then this gift could be very useful. Why not have the cleaning done while she is away? She will definitely enjoy coming home to a totally clean home.

Top 5 Popular Free or Inexpensive Gifts for a Wife

Meaningful gifts don't necessarily have to be expensive. These type of popular gifts for a wife are going to require some thought. This list includes gifts that are more from the heart and typically do not cost a lot of money or any money at all. Women will almost always love to get a gift if they know you spent some forethought, planning, time and effort in getting or making the gift.

Inexpensive books that make a meaningful gift

1) Books.

These can be a rare first edition by an author she enjoys reading, or a book of love poems. Giving a book that specifically relates to an area of interest you know she would enjoy. There is a book titled "Book of Us: A Journal of Your Love Story in 150 Questions." This book invites your wife chronicle the fun, romantic and memorable events of your life together. Another great book is "What I Love About You," a playful and tender fill-in-the-blank book that helps you say what is really in your heart.

2) Video Tribute.

Wives who are mothers especially love this simple to make gift. If you have a computer, and most folks do these days, then you probably have a computer program like Apple® iMovie or MicroSoft® MovieMaker. These programs are typically included and already loaded onto your computer. Simply collect some video clips or still shots from the past few years, mix in some of her favorite music and presto - instant movie tribute! If you need additional help, simply type in "making movies online" into your computer browser. There are quite a few websites devoted to helping people make their own movies.

3) Spa at Home.

You're a guy so you're very familiar with DIY (Do It Yourself) projects, right? Well here's a DIY home project I bet you've never heard of - DIY Home Spa. There are so many ideas for this gift like laying down a bed of rose petals leading to the bathroom where you have set the mood with scented candles surrounding a calming, warm bath. This is one of those ideas where you really need to go all out and make it very special. Most DIY Home Spa treatments can be easily made with things you already have in the home. Just in case, plan a trip to Bed, Bath and Beyond to pick up some of her favorite things.

4) Write Her a Love Letter.

How long has it been since you told her how much she means to you, how you yearn for her? You may need to expend some real effort and take a few practice runs at this but the payoff can be huge. Look to the masters for the best advice and some of the best love letters have been written by regular people throughout history. The Sullivan Ballou letter is a great example of how a love letter should be written. Remember, never copy a love letter - simply read a few and let the words you write be sincere words from your own heart.

5) Make Dinner for Her.

While this seems like a small thing to most guys, I think they will soon discover just how difficult it can be to prepare dinner. This is also one of those time you should go all out - order some good wine, elegant candles, great music and the best fine china. Wear your best suit and when she arrives home, give her some time to freshen up and change into something more formal. Don't forget small details like proper place settings (do your homework!), flowers and even personal place cards. Make it an evening for and about her. This is a simple and inexpensive gift that will mean so much to your wife.

The 3 Basic Laws of Gift-Giving for Husbands

• Law #1 - NEVER give anything "As Seen on TV" as a gift to your wife. Same for late night TV ads, Infomercials or anything else that is hawked by slick hucksters on the boob tube. Pay no attention to the little voice inside your head telling you your wife will love a combination onion chopper and laundry scrubber.

• Law #2 - NEVER give her household appliances as a gift for an anniversary or other holiday. I dare you to find anything romantic about a washer/dryer combo, side-by-side refrigerator or countertop blender - It doesn't matter how "sexy" they look in the store. It's OK to give household appliances on a special occasion, but not on Mother's Day, Valentine's Day and especially not on your wedding anniversary.

• Law #3 - NEVER, under ANY circumstances give your wife wrinkle cream or diet books as a gift - EVER! Really? Do you have a death wish? If you dare try this, wear a helmet because it's quickly coming right back at you.

CZCZCZ - thanks for the comment. Glad you enjoyed the Hub. I also think the gifts from the heart are the best - but sometimes a little sparkle is just the right thing. M

Great list of gift ideas, was fun reading through this hub.

I guess I have always lucked out and been successful with cheaper "from the heart" gifts :) At least for my wife, something that is very thoughtful and directly what she either needs or is a pleasant surprise works, instead of just mindless expensive items. She does like to ask me if I am forgetting something though every time we walk by a jewelry store.

Thank you, anastasiaphillis - and yes, money can be unromantic if not given in the proper spirit. Thanks for the read! M

Excellent hub! you must be a mindreader. May I add that money, whilst always good, does not make for a romantic gift either.

Thumbs up for very useful information! More guys should read this hub before they go shopping for anniversary, birthday and holiday gifts. The 3 basic "no-no's" are very valuable tips. Excellent job!

      Hi MK

Fabulous hub and very well presented. I'll have to print this one and hide for future reference. I would have considered myself the "sensitive soul" type until I read this and realised that I could do so much more. Voted up and the rest,
