Pretensions: A Poem

Updated on September 21, 2011

Everyone feels down every now and then

Each of us feel desperate every now and again.. .

There are instances when frustrations eat us up

And sometimes we just simply want to give up

But then again we think that there are better things to attend to

Things that make us who we are and frustrations that hinder us from growing

We then begin to fake a façade and shed a smile

Even though inside, it feels like as if we’re about to die

Out in the sunlight, we prance

In front of our colleagues, we dance

Living like as if life is a breeze

Showing them that somehow, everything is bliss

After all the presentations and the façade,

We go home alone to face our self…

We sit in front of the mirror and there, we see ourselves again

It’s as if a mask has been lifted, and now the real thing appears

Pretentions may have become our best friend for some time

It may have protected us from completely losing ourselves

The hurt feelings we may be keeping may have been bounded by our pretence

But in the end of it all, we will never be able to fool our own eyes

At the end of the day, we need to face ourselves and face the truth

We need to let go and realize who we really are…

Then for the sake of those whom we love,

When another day comes, we pick up that mask again,

Put it on and hope that nobody will notice the scars we have been keeping...

Hard as it is, sometimes we just have to live by this pretence

To protect those whom we love, to assure that the pain stops with us…

and I do appreciate your comment on writing being your mode of channeling your negative feelings to a more positive course... Kudos to you :)

This is very true of many persons today. I can honestly agree that I have been there before. I have portrayed that very facade, that all is well on the outside whilst screaming on the inside. Sometimes it was to protect loved ones, other times, to keep my sadness a secret from work colleagues and friends. I have since learned to channel my feelings, whether good or bad, into my writing. Thanks for sharing this poem. Keep writing, that others may be moved by your words !!

Very deep and introspective look at a person with depression.
