Does Age Really Matter?

Many people are tempted to believe that when it comes to matters of the heart, age really doesn’t matter. He could be 45 years old and you could be a mere 24, but as long as you have the right chemistry, then this is not a bar for the two of you dating and falling in love with each other. To a certain extent, the saying that “age doesn’t matter” is actually quite accurate because there is really no bar to people falling in love with each other regardless of their respective age groups. Of course, studying things from a psychological perspectives, there are certain emerging tendencies that show the relatively normal age gap preferred by individuals who are into dating and relationships.

The Preferred Age Gap Varies Across Cultures

Of course, not everything is really set in stone here. In a separate study by the Max Planck Institute in Germany, it was found that men who choose a partner who is as much as 15 to 17 years younger than them actually produces health benefits by reducing their chances of dying early by as much as 1/5th.

In another study conducted on Chinese Women who were around 18-25 years old, it was found that the sample subjects actually preferred men who were older than them by at least 10 years.

Why The Difference Between The Sexes?

Cultural differences may account for the different preferences as far as the age gap and dating are concerned. Of course, even with these varying preferences, it is quite clear that men always seem to prefer younger women while women tend to prefer older men. According to several sources, one reason could be that women mature faster mentally at around the age of 14-16 years old while men in general tend to mentally mature at 20-25 years of age.

Another reason could because men are more prone to be attracted to a woman’s physical appearance – especially traits that indicate fertility. This is why younger women are preferred. In contrast, women are not as concerned with the virility of their prospective partner and are more likely to look for someone who is physical and mentally stable as well as financially secure.

At the end of the day, these are all merely general observations and the truth is that age really doesn’t matter as long as you are in love with each other and you are both determined to make your relationship work.
