The Case Of The "Slow Dater": What to do if you're dating that person

Updated on May 13, 2009

Are you dating someone who seems like they’ll never want to take things to the next level?

Well there are a few things you can do:

1. Initiate. If you’ve been dating someone for while and see little to no effort on his/her part to take things further, then it may take some initiation on your part to get things moving. Let him/her know that you’re interested and you’d like to get into something a little bit more serious with them.

2. Communicate. You should always give the person you’re with the chance to express how they truly feel. It may be a reason they’re not trying to make progress at the current time. This is why communication is so important. He/she may’ve been hurt in the past and want to take things slow. Or the interest may not be there. They may not feel the same spark or chemistry that you feel. So communicate- and you’ll understand why things are the way that they are.

It’s important for you and the person that you’re dating to know each other’s intention early on. If it was expressed to you that he/she ultimately would like to get in a relationship, then you have every right to bring it up. Give whoever you’re dating a max of 6 months (from the beginning) to take things to the next level. If things go beyond that with no change, you have to decide whether or not you want to stay or pursue a relationship with someone else.
