The Door To Nowhere (Let's Change That To Now Here)

My niche on HubPages is guitar lessons, but I have always thought of myself as a somewhat of a writer. I definitely express myself better on paper than in a conversation. Not sure how much continuity this piece has but…oh well.

The Door To Nowhere

Was it really only yesterday? No. It was a long time ago when I came to the realization that all doors lead to somewhere. Every challenge, every situation, every event, however negative, has hope written on the other side of it. We have all faced these doors and braved that path, and it has turned out fine. How do I know this? It's easy, I wouldn't be here to write this and you would not be here to read it.

What I Have Learned

I don't claim to be a sage on any topic. Heaven knows I have made my share of mistakes.

Learn to love yourself first, it is the only way you can love someone else. Don't get me started on relationships. At this age, I am still learning. Sometimes doing your best is only good enough for you, I understand that now. And you know what, that is fine. I have learned to live with that. I am not out to impress anyone or beg for praise. What someone thinks of me is none of MY business. What is important, is how I feel about myself. That should be the bottom line for everyone. It's kind of like that cliché when learning to drive: watch out for the other guy. If we all did that, then there is someone watching out for you.

Happiness is a state of mind. We have all heard this. It is true. In any situation, you have a number of choices and happiness is always one of them. You can choose to let the moment rule you or you can rule the moment. You can choose to be happy or you can choose to be miserable. That choice will radiate from you like a solar flare. Everyone will know. Why not choose the easier one? Shrugging off a bad situation is always better than holding on to it. After all, it is already done, it is already in the past. It is OVER! I know what you are thinking. It is easy to say this, but not that easy to do. Of course not. It is not easy for me, it is not easy for anyone, but is is a hell of a lot better than letting it fester. Try it the next time your blood is boiling and you are about to lose it. Breathe deep, count to ten, go to a happy place, whatever works for you. Like I said, I am not a sage. I am not qualified to tell you what to do, figure it out.

There is great peace in the 'now'. This is true. When you are present, the mind is not occupied with crap. Everything slows down, becomes calm. It cannot be any other way. You are not concerned with something you or someone else did or said to you in the past. You are not concerned with something you have to do in the future. You are simply here NOW. There can be no turmoil in the present. There can be no anxiety or anticipation. Once again, this is not easy to do. Try it the next time you are performing some menial task like washing the dishes. Focus on your hands holding the dishes. Look at the pattern or lack of one on the plates. Feel the shape of the glass. Banish all thoughts from your mind except for that present moment. You will be surprised how time slows down and calmness sets in. I have had some success with this, and it is overwhelming, but like I said, it's not easy.

Concerning that door, push it open, step through and you have arrived. Don't look back, there is nothing there to see.

You didn't think I could leave this without referencing a song did you? I wrote the lyrics for this one, vocals courtesy of my partner, Elizabeth Storms.

THANK YOU

When I was just a girl

And I owned the world

I wondered what it was like to get older.

I never reached that age

I never turned that page

But my heart just seemed to grow colder

You came along

Set my world ablaze

Helped me get through

The darkest days

And all I can ever say

Is thank you

And now my life has changed

It's all been rearranged

I finally got the weight of the world off of my shoulder

And now my time is here

And this will be my year

I'll never let the fire go out and just smoulder

You came along

And you believed in me

Helped me see the sky

Through the trees

And all I can ever say

Is thank you

You lift me up

Never let me down

Showed me the way

And it turned me around

You gave me hope

Got my life off the ground

And for this, I always be grateful

And now my time is here

And this will be my year

I'll never let the fire go out, never let it smoulder

You came along

And you believed in me

Helped me see the sky

Through the trees

And all I can ever say

Is thank you

And all I can ever say

Is thank you

Nice response to the challenge, Lorne. I love the song and the music video....that lady has a beautiful voice and she seems so full of life. That was a very nice experience and thank you for sharing it all with us.

Thank you, I agree. It's really a shameless plug for one of my original tunes available on iTunes, Amazon etc. :)

Music is still the main event -- no amount or quality of writing can match it.
