The Romance of Rains

Updated on July 24, 2010

I visited mumbai (Bombay) recently and was just hooked by the atmosphere. It was raining, dull gray sky, low temperatures (25 deg is less for mumbai) and that squeaky clean feeling which one can only get after using water to wash away whatever.

I took a walk along the Marine Drive promenade. The angry yet playful sea, waves crashing with unfailing regularity against the break water, sending up salty sprays on the lovers, children, adults all sitting there, just to feel the sea against their skin, just like lovers long for the touch of their loved ones. I saw families, just sitting, enjoying the freshness of the atmosphere, soaking in the rain and letting time and the cars pass by. As the sun was shrouded by the clouds, there was no concept of Morning, noon or twilight. The only way to know the passage of time was the clock, which no one wanted to check. A moment frozen in time, for infinity. I am sure all persons on the promenade just wanted to hold on to the magic of the moment, forget all their worries and deadlines and just bask in the romance of the moment. Umbrellas, raincoats, wind cheaters were forgotten or removed, just to feel the rain against the skin.

What is it about the rains that captivates people? How does it create the romance? Two lovers, sitting inside their room, looking out at the rain, listening to the raindrops falling outside can spend an eternity, just doing that. There is something very comforting about the rains. Its like Mother Nature is regenerating herself and giving us the Elixir of life to help us regenerate.

Songs on rain like Raindrops keep falling on my Head, I love a rainy night and many others, epitomize the magic of the rains. But the bottomline, rains give us an indication all is right with the world, the planet is living and giving us a chance to live. Let us respect that and live with Mother nature as one.
