The Time Once Upon
2014 Princess Story
Every fairytale begins, "Once Upon a Time". I want to know, what 'time' is this? Are these clearly singular moments in the grand escapade of actual 'time' that is always fleeting? Will we ever be in that moment of time? And did the next moment understand what was meant by "Happily ever after"? Or at the very least did the characters in the story understand?
Once upon a time, I was told that I was a princess and I could dress how I wanted and act how I liked. Once upon a time, I was the most beautiful girl in the world and everyone loved me and I loved everyone. Once upon a time, I could eat what I want, do what I want and I felt great about it and myself. Once upon a time, there was one man that loved me unconditionally and he was going to appear at the perfect moment and save my day. Where did the time go? I'll tell you where it went...
It went to my single mothers full time job and my fathers full time addiction. It went to the burned out, unhappy teachers in our education systems. It went to the marketing scheme's and materialistic media of the 21st century. It went to every airbrushed model in the magazine. It also went out the window, with the other million New Yorkers growing up pretending they knew what was going on, or what 'time' it was-when we had no idea.
More than ever I have my answers today (funny how that works out). The time now, is 28 years old and the only 'ever after' is right here and right now. I have surpassed 15 prince charmings and none of them saved anything. It's taken this much time, but I dress and act how I like again. I am the most beautiful girl and so are you. I love everyone and everyone loves me. I eat what I want and do what I want and I'm happy about it. There is one man that loves me unconditionally and he did appear at the right moment but he is not going to save my day and he is not going to ruin it either.
This princess chews bubble gum and kicks back in high tops with her crooked low pony tail. This princess has a gazillion girlfriends that are princesses too and remind each other what they are worth. This princess doesn't need anything except the unshakeable faith that keeps her cool throughout time. This princess takes care of herself. This princess learned over and over in time, not to work too hard, not to 'do' more than 'be' and the difference between entertainment and real life. This princess learned to love her scars more than any airbrush because it showed real life and real work.
Once upon a time, this princess had no idea what life was all about. The moment she gave up thinking she did, she did....and she lived happily ever after.
