Three Fun and Free Bridal Shower Games
I've been to quite a few bridal showers, and they always start out the same way. Once all the guests have arrived, the host starts a round of bridal shower games. Although the guests and the bride may be good at faking a smile, this is not anyone's favorite part of the shower!
As much as we pretend it's not true, most women dread playing games at bridal showers. While we enjoy the camaraderie, the food, and the gifts, those are only our reward for making it through the usual dreaded games.
But, it doesn't have to be this way! There are games that won't make your guests cringe, and will even bring quite a few laughs. And the best part is, they are FREE!
The Weight Game
How many of you read that title and thought "No way!" Well yes, that's the title of the game...but it's not what you think. That's the fun!
Get a typical bathroom scale (non-digital ones work best). While the group is talking amongst themselves, quietly bring out the scale and put it in the middle of the floor. Watch as the conversation slowly dies, and looks of horror and panic come onto the guests' faces. Oh NO! Their worst nightmare - weighing themselves in front of a group, and after eating all that cake!
Give them a minute to panic. Then explain that you are giving out a prize for the heaviest...purse! After the laughter subsides, have everyone bring their purses in and weigh each one. The prize (along with a lot of ribbing) goes to the person who's purse tips the scale!
Tip: If the purses aren't registering enough on the scale, have the guest of honor hold one purse in each hand, and keep the heavier of the two. She can go around the room comparing the purses (keeping the heaviest each time) until the winner is decided.
The Helpful Door Prize
The bride-to-be will love you for this one! More than just a simple door prize, you are helping her out in this busy time of her life.
When you are planning the bridal shower, purchase some thank you cards for the bride. Make sure there are enough for each guest, with a few extra.
As each guest arrives, give them an envelope from the thank you cards (just the envelope). Ask the guest to write their address on the front as though the envelope were being mailed to them. Then, collect the envelopes in a basket or bag.
After all guests have filled out an envelope, ask the bride to pull one or two envelopes out of the basket. These people each win a door prize! Then tell the bride that her thank you cards are already addressed, and make sure she leaves the shower with the cards and envelopes. Trust me, she'll thank you for it.
Self Portrait with a Twist!
For this game, you will need paper plates and pens for each person. Be sure to use pens and not pencils so that the drawings will show up well, and paper plates instead of paper because you will need something sturdy.
Give each person a paper plate and a pen, and ask them to put the plate face up on top of their heads. The side where you would put food should be toward the ceiling, and the bottom should be sitting on their heads. Use one hand to keep the plate steady.
Next announce that everyone is going to draw a self portrait on the paper plate, with it sitting on top of their heads! You will tell them what to draw and when, and the best part is that they can't see what they are drawing! You can perform the directions however you would like. Here is an example of how you could direct the group:
- "First, draw your head near the top of the plate."
- "Now draw your hair. Draw it exactly like your hair looks, and make sure you put it on the top of your head!" (At this point they've already forgotten where they drew their heads, and they can't see a thing!)
- "Add your face on the front of your head. Draw eyes, nose and mouth. Give yourself a great big smile!" (The guests are probably laughing right now, as they can't tell where they put their heads on the picture! There are face parts being drawn all over the plates.)
- "Next draw your body. Make sure you have two arms and two legs!"
- "Add your hands and feet. Put them where they belong - hands at the ends of your arms, and feed at the ends of your legs."
- "Now give yourself a necklace and earrings!" (By now they don't remember where they put anything, so they are just guessing, drawing and laughing.)
Now have everyone bring their paper plates down off of their heads and take a look at their self portraits. Show them off, and have everyone vote for the one that looks the most like the artist.
Bridal shower games don't have to be the most dreaded part of the event. These three games are not only free, but will leave your guests wanting more!
