Three Rings

Updated on March 11, 2013

Three rings.

Not two or four as some others would do for code but three.

The answering machine would not pick up until four rings so he had time to back out. But he was not going to back out.

He had waited until he thought she might be alone.

He had fantasized about her. Where she was and what was she doing and who was she doing it with?

He knew that he was not the center of her universe. He had realized that for all he had hoped for him to be to her, her everything- he was not. But he had hoped.

She waited for the phone to ring three times. She started to think of what of she was doing.

What if it was him on the other end? What was she going to say to him? Meet me at the same place, same time? How trite was that?

She had been longing for the romance to come back into her marriage. She had certainly left enough messages for him to read. After 15 years of marriage, they had become predictable. That was part of the problem.

She had longed for the old days, where just his gaze upon her would set her world afire. But this was no longer a reality. They had settled into a "comfortable" scene.

But now, a new reality ruled her world.

She picked up the receiver and waited until she had heard his voice.

"Are you alone?" he asked. He was breathless and scared that they would get caught.

She answered "Yes I am but I don't want to be..." She had wondered if that was enough to answer the question with enough to lead him to ask the next question.

"Can you meet me at our place?" He anticipated and hoped that she would answer in the affirmative but he had learned from her patterns not to expect her to answer in the affirmative. She had rejected him in the past.

She had decided that she would meet him. She breathlessly answered him that she would be ready in an hour.

He had arrived early and placed the flowers in the vase and lit the candles he had brought. She knocked twice on the door and he opened the door. The sight that meet him was breathtaking.

She stood there with her coat covering her. He lead her inside and took her coat. The sight that greeted him was indescribable . The song by Bob Dylan could not relay how she looked - she was more than wonderful tonight.

She lead him to the bed and he started to protest but soon her lips met his and he could no longer contain himself.

He asked her if her husband knew that she was going to be late and she asked him if if his wife knew that he was going to a meeting after work?

They looked at each other and laughed.

Of course, they knew. They had discovered this was a way to "cheat" but still remain faithful. They always felt "bad" for this but this is what kept their marriage to each other hot.

Great read! It was intense and then I took my sigh of relief at the end.
