Tips on having an intimate wedding

Updated on January 31, 2011

What does that mean to you?

This means that the couple who’s about to tie the knot is gearing towards a small wedding.

A wedding is a ceremony, in which two people are united in marriage, two hearts coming together as one in the sight of God. Wedding traditions and customs vary greatly between cultures, ethnic groups, religions, countries, and social classes.

An intimate wedding is a social event, a celebration in which we celebrate the new life of a couple with a few close friends and family members.

The trend today is more and more couples are leaning towards small intimate weddings because of budgeting restriction and some just do not want to be bothered with the hoopla. A small intimate wedding whatever the settings offer you the opportunity to experience a more memorable, relaxed, comfortable, cozy and romantic  wedding; not to say you can’t achieve this with a larger wedding , it’s just will be more difficult because time will be limited as to the amount of time you will be able to spend with your guest.

I have often heard comments from brides that had large weddings saying the one thing they regret the most is not being able to spend more time with their guess, or the day was a blur to them due to scheduling issues.  If time is a commodity to you then a small wedding is the way to go.

When the emphasis is on intimate, the less people the better. To achieve the level of intimacy in your wedding it’s advisable to have a guess list of 50 and under, anything more than that you will be moving away from intimacy.

Benefits of a small intimate wedding

Having a beautiful, unique, romantic, and elegant wedding in a small setting allows you the freedom to carry out your wedding theme more elaborately on a grander scale. You will be able to emphasize certain aspect of the wedding that you might not be able to do otherwise with a larger wedding because of budget restriction, with a smaller wedding and you will be able to save on your budget.

You can customize your wedding to your own tastes because you will have more freedom to be creative and make your wedding a unique experience which will be a reflection of the two of you, this is your moment to really shine bright and not settle for the status quo. Having a smaller guest list allow you the time to interact and spend quality time with your guests, in which you can do some serious mixing and mingling. A smaller setting is a more manageable, cozy and relaxed atmosphere where you are able to participate fully in every area of your wedding without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

What ever size your wedding is, the key to a successful wedding day is in the planning and organization.

First order of business is to decide on a budget, the number of guess, and a theme, you will need this information in order to better plan your wedding.

A wedding can get very expensive and if you are not careful you can easily be a victim of money, this is why it’s wise to set a budget for this occation.Your budget should be very realistic of your circumstance and not “trying to keep up with the Jones”, whatever your budget is you should stick to it, so you do not run into financial difficulties and stress after the wedding.

I suggest that you prepare a wedding budget worksheet; this will help you plan out what you’ll need to pay for and how much you should plan to spend on each item.

Guess list:

This list should contain your closest family members and friend that you want to share your intimate moment with, remember to try to limit your list to a maximum of 50 guess.

A theme should reflect your personalities and lifestyles, so decide on a theme that fits both your vision as to what that intimate affair should look like, and make it an event to be remembered and treasured. A theme makes it easier to coordinate your wedding decorations, invitations, favors, flowers, menu, and finding the right location for your ceremony and reception.

If your theme is being represented by certain colors then you must be consistent in your theme, whatever colors you are working with you must decide on the shade of that color and stick to it.

It’s recommended that you limit your colors choices to a maximum of 3 colors and be sure they compliment each other, your theme will pull the whole event together and everything will coordinate in style.

 Some hot colors for 2011

Greens, Blues, Yellow, Coral, Purple, Mocha, Brown, and Red

The setting and location of your wedding is vitally important because it adds to the mood of the wedding, it can increase your sense of intimacy or detract from it, so choose wisely. You can be traditional or laid back and fun, it is your choice and it should reflect who you both are.

There are a plethora of places you can choose from to hold your wedding and reception, some examples of a small wedding venue might be City Hall, an outdoor garden setting, a beach or waterfront area, a home wedding, a restaurant, community hall, a church, bed and breakfast inn, or an elegant hotel that provides small cozy banquet rooms.

Other ideas you might want to look into is a destination wedding; you could go to a Tropical resort, a remote village, Water Park, or a Historical site. It would be nice and simple to combine the wedding ceremony and reception in the same place or in near proximity to each other, this would be very considerate for your guest so they won’t feel overwhelmed or intimidated by their surroundings but they can be relaxed, comfortable and enjoy themselves.

Choose your venue by compiling a list of places you both are interested in, and narrow down the list until you arrive at the place that makes you both happy. Check out the reputation of venue thoroughly, by requesting references and seeing samples of past weddings, if your first impression of the place and staff is less than impressive then I would suggest that you move on until you find a place that dazzle you.

Once you have chosen your venue then you can get into the details of bringing your vision to life, I think this is the fun part; but that’s only my opinion.

Wedding planner:

Even with the smallest of budget you can have a spectacular celebrity- style wedding as seen in magazines or on TV, your wedding can look like a million buck, it’s all in the details.

Planning a wedding can be a very daunting and stressful process, so with this in mind you can opt to have extra help by hiring a wedding planner, or you can be your own wedding planner; that is your personal choice.

If you choose to have a wedding planner, make sure it is one whose work fits with your style. This person should have sufficient experience and credentials as a wedding planner, and should be able to show you pictures of their work. Your wedding planner should listen to you very carefully and pay full attention to your vision, needs, budget, and ideas; as well as can add ways and creativity to enhance your vision into reality.

A wedding planner is there to relief you of the stress of planning a wedding not add to your stress, so compatibility and trust is the utmost key ingredient in working together.

If you are going to be your own wedding planner then you must prepare yourself by being knowledgeable about the type wedding you desire, this can be done through research. Get your self some interior- decorating books, wedding magazine, and online information as to how to plan the wedding of your dream and gather all pertinent materials as you go along.

You can be as inventive and creative as you want, this will set your wedding apart from others as you add your personal touches to the smallest of detail, in order to achieve the look of elegance and sophistication you desire. During this time of creativity you need to keep track of your ideas, so put together a wedding board containing all the things you want in your wedding, it will help ensure that your theme, style, and color scheme remain cohesive.

On the wedding board you can include things like fabric swatches of different texture, lines, and colors, pictures of different floral arrangements, floral bouquet, and type flowers you like, and the venue. This spectacular intimate affair will leave your guess in awe and complimenting you for years to come, this is not as easy as it sounds so make sure you are up to the challenge and that you have dedicated people that you can trust and rely on to help you.

One of the most important elements in a wedding is flowers; they play a very pivotal role in any size or style wedding. Flowers will transform your wedding from ordinary to extraordinary by their sheer beauty within a room.

Floral arrangements brings beauty and life to a room, and they are a conversational piece all by themselves, if arrange to compliment the table setting and the theme of your room, then your event will be a hit. You could never have enough flowers, you can however have too few, and if you are lacking in the floral department it will be very notable, people will pick up on it and they will talk.

A small wedding would provide you the opportunity to splurge a bit more on your flowers, to have a lush and beautiful setting. Your floral arrangement can be very elaborate or simply, they will set the atmosphere and ambiance of the room, so picking out the perfect floral arrangement for your wedding can be very overwhelming, seek out the guidance of a floral expert.

To decide on the right arrangement you have to consider your theme and style for example having a formal wedding you might go with roses, calla lilies, or orchid because they give a sophisticated and elegant feel to a wedding, if you having an informal wedding consider sunflowers, Shasta daises, or carnations because they bring out the natural beauty of a location.

Table arrangements

Get personal with table arrangements and seating assignment, keep in mind that you are being unique in order to set you apart in the minds of your guess. These are suggestions: You can have assigned seating’s to encourage mingling and meeting of new friends if there are any guess there that do not know each other.

Place a nicely design seating cards with your guess picture and name printed on it, you can personalize it even more by adding a particular phrase that will capture their personality, this is sure to bring a smile to your guess face and they will remember this always. This place setting will make it easy for your guess to be recognized and find their way to the right table; also they will feel more apart of the event in that you went through a lot of trouble to include them in your wedding.

Name your assigned table after places that you and your fiancé hold precious to you, it has to flow with your theme. Inform   your guess before hand about the different table site and give them the opportunity to select a particular table because the table site will be represented by certain favorite cuisine. You can also choose to celebrate who you both are by incorporating your ethnic and family traditions.

Other things to coordinate and make your table settings attractive, elegant and unique are things such as your beautiful engraved and design napkins, favors, centerpiece, candles, seashells, props, and elegant dinnerware. Chair covering is very beautiful and it adds elegance and sophistication to any room, and you can enhance the chair covering even further with the use of beautiful color coordinated sashes.

Food and Drinks

You do not want to skimp on the food or drinks at your wedding, better to leave full than hungry because your guess will be certainly critiquing the food. Good food and drinks will make your event, so whether you are having it catered or cook at home make sure that the chef’s are good cooks, and that they can provide you with a sumptuous wedding meal.

Have a meal testing dinner to sample the dishes and drinks you have selected to be served the day of your wedding, and give your approval on the menu; you want no surprises on your special day.

The entertainment should reflect your personalities, so whatever your choice music - a band, DJ, or live entertainment, you should preview all songs and build a playlist for your occasion, including a song for your first dance. You want to have music that is upbeat, lively and fun, the music should be appealing to your audience so they can dance and enjoy themselves.

Music should be playing before your guess arrive at the reception, you want them to be greeted by soft smooth playing of melody so they can feel welcomed and relaxed, as well as entertained. You do not want silence during any break time because it will kill the mood of any wedding, people will begin to leave early because they feel bored, tired, uncomfortable, and restless. If your entertainment is not up to par you will lose the attention of your guess real fast.

On a personal note: I myself will be having a small intimate wedding and splurging on the honeymoon.

Have fun in whatever you choose to do and Congratulation to all the Brides and Grooms of 2011.

This is some great advice! Sometimes guests travel pretty far for a wedding. Everyone feels bad in the end if the couple doesn't have time to greet the guests. Even when a large venue is chosen, an intimate feel can be achieved with the décor and seating arrangement. In fact, it is pretty cool when the 200 Peachtree Grand Atrium is used like that ( ). Grand and intimate are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
