Top Ten Wedding Color Combinations

Updated on March 02, 2016

Here Comes The Bride!

You got that long-awaited ring in your Christmas stocking and now you've set the date! Excited? Of course you are! Thrilled? That goes without saying. Overwhelmed? You bet and that's understandable. With so many, many decisions to be made, wedding planning can be completely overwhelming, not to mention frequently frustrating. However, choosing your wedding colors can be the easiest part and after that, it's pretty much all downhill. Well...except for maybe the family dramas that tend to crop up along the way and you having a Bride-zilla moment or two! But hey, other than that, smooth sailing! Just take a deep breath, and let the planning begin as we look at the Top 10 Wedding Color Combos For 2013!

Here Comes The Bride, All Dressed In ...Red?

Source

And The Color Of The Year Is...

(1) It looks like the kind folks from the Pantone Color Institute are responsible for this one....Tangerine Tango & Pink. Pantone declares tangerine tango as a "bright and encouraging color" and as such, is a perfect combo for your spring or summer wedding. However, tangerine alone can certainly be a bit overwhelming used on its own, so it could use a little sumpin-sumpin' to calm it down a little. Enter hot pink. Now I know you're saying hot pink...how can that be calming? There's something about pink that despite the shade adds a softness to whatever it touches. Can't you just picture your bridesmaid's bouquets in all roses of tangerine and pink with maybe a little yellow thrown in for fun?

Your Wedding Décor Is In The Pink

(2) Blush Pink & Pewter Gray. Now I'll admit to being a pink fan from way back, but this pink is not the pink you would be pairing with the Tangerine Tango hotness mentioned above. This is the softest of pinks, think the faint blush of a baby's cheek. Paired with grey, which is on a high it hasn't seen in years, it's a gorgeous and elegant color combination. Throw in a little bling with some diamond mesh wrapped votives or mercury glass vases and you have a stunning look that will create an audible intake of breath when guests first lay eyes on your reception venue, I promise! Grey IS the new black!

Pretty In Pink...And Gray

Vintage Wedding With Your Grandmother's Blue Willow China

(3) Blue Willow & White. At a loss for what else to call this color and very hesitant to tag it with a handle like Royal Blue which sounds like it belongs in a nautical themed wedding, I'll call it Blue Willow like the famous china of the same name. Of course, Pantone would call it Sodalite Blue, another on their list of hot colors for 2012, but hey, what do they know, right? You'd think they were color experts or something! The great part about this shade of blue is that it's flattering to just about everyone, so your bridesmaids will love you for it! Ditto your groomsmen, since men are famous for their love of blue. Not to mention with the emphasis on vintage still in full swing, despite Huffington Post's misguided assertion that vintage is dead, you can use readily available pieces of blue & white china for centerpieces and décor. Throw in a little red if it's a military wedding or sunny yellow which looks fabulous with blue & white and you have an amazing color palette.

The NonColor Color...White

(4) White On White - The beauty of white for a wedding is absolutely unparalleled. When you think of white, most people think of a stark color, but white can be so much more. How about cream, ivory, buff, eggshell, vanilla, magnolia, ecru, beige...the list of beautiful whites goes on and on, including an off-white called Starfish tagged as a hot color for 2012 by Pantone. Mixing different shades of white in your wedding décor can look incredible together if you're careful about the undertones of the whites you are using. Some whites have a bluish undertone, giving them a cool look, others have a brown undertone which tends to warm them up a bit. The fun part about using white on white is you can play with texture to really make the differences in the whites stand out. An example would be using a stark white tablecloth for your reception tables with a beautiful khaki (also a form of white!) damask runner and a cluster of milk glasses vases as the centerpiece filled with peonies, roses, and dahlias all in different shades of white and cream. Even versatile burlap which comes in ivory and natural can add interesting texture to your tables and centerpieces.

Elegant White On White

Be My Valentine!

(5) Red & Pink - OK, I'll admit this is a stretch, even for a dyed-in-the wool pink lover like myself, but I have seen some truly amazing combinations of red and pink that were simply stunning. With this combo, you need to be careful about the color red and pink you choose. Hot pink and red...not so much...pale pink and red... ahh, yes, gorgeous! You really need to underplay the use of this palette to avoid it looking a little Valentine-y, but if you don't morph into overkill, it can turn out looking elegant instead of cheesy. For a classic look, pull in some silver touches like mercury glass with your centerpieces. Put your bridesmaids in blush pink short dresses with red rose or peony bouquets and have groomsmen wear pale grey suits with pink ties and hints of red handkerchiefs poking out of their bread pocket. Your friends will call you crazy until they see the effect all together at your wedding, then they'll call you innovative and daring!

I'll Have A Margarita, Please!

(6) Sweet Lilac & Margarita- I'll admit these were stripped straight from the Pantone Hot Color Chart, but can you imagine this dynamic color duo? In 2011, pewter and eggplant, grey and plum, purple and silver were done to death. This is such a fresh and light approach to the heavy handed purples we saw last year with the fun zing of a soft lime added to the mix. With the innovative things florists are now doing with shades of green in bouquets including green hydrangeas and Bells Of Ireland, your bridesmaids could wear dresses in lavender tones and look incredible. Lilac, like blue, is a color that looks great on just about everyone, whether of fair or dark complexion and can be paired with either gold or silver.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow Wedding

(7) Rainbow - Before you start saying I've taken leave of my senses on this one, hear me out. Can you remember being stuck in a hideously ugly bridesmaid's gown of some horrendous color, but you did it, because you loved your friend? Well, this is not one of those times. Although you could dress each of your bridesmaids in a different color of the rainbow of your/their choosing, why not try dressing them all in black, (groomsmen, too) with fun rainbow splashes of color in parasols, bouquets, shoes, socks, boutonnieres, and ties. Trendy and summery accents like pinwheels would be great with a rainbow-themed décor, but if you really want your wedding to stand out, why not do a complete "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" wedding complete with ruby slippers for you and a yellow brick road rose petal aisle runner? Weddings don't have to be stiff and staid affairs anymore, so a rainbow theme wedding would be great for the young and young at heart.

Source

(8) Olive Green & Topaz - Ahhh, the colors of fall, rich, vibrant, gorgeous....but some of them, including chocolate brown done to death in recent years. Chocolate brown and green, chocolate brown and blue, chocolate brown and pink...enough, enough! Surely, there are other fall wedding colors besides chocolate brown and ________! Enter olive green and topaz. Yellow topaz, being the birthstone for the month of November, and olive green, a warm and inviting color with a masculine feel, make a great color combination for an autumn or woodlands theme wedding. Also absolutely gorgeous with either gold or silver accents, blinged out tree branches would look great with this duo as would moss, gold mercury glass, or tree round cake stands. And imagine some topaz color heels with sparkly rhinestone accents peeking out from under your gown or an olive green sash with topaz colored beaded accents. Awesome...that's you!

Break Out The Champagne...And Black!

(9) Champagne and Black- Champagne, just the name brings to mind elegance, doesn't it? And the color itself...not gold, not silver, not beige or pink, but a shimmery mixture of all of these is just amazingly beautiful. Set off by flickering votives and paired with dramatic black, it will lend an air of wealth and richness to your wedding even if you and your groom are on the champagne taste/beer budget program! Imagine black satin tablecloths with champagne colored pintuck runners and a white on white palette of flowers or ostrich feathers springing from tall Eiffel tower vases...simply breathtaking!

For More Great Wedding Ideas...

Whatever you choose as your wedding colors, try to make it fit you and your groom's personalities and tastes. It's nice to take into consideration the thoughts of your wedding party, but at the end of the day, it's your wedding, so hopefully, you can make a choice everyone can live with and love...at least for a day!

(10) Peach & Silver- Amazingly, peach has staged somewhat of a comeback. If you're a young bride, you probably don't remember the peach and seafoam green of the 80's. Seems everyone and their mother had a bathroom in those colors. Kind of brings back some ugly flashbacks for those who lived it....ugh. Seafoam is actually staging it's own little mini-comeback, as seen in some recent trunk shows of wedding gowns in unusual colors, as well as mint green. I can buy seafoam and peach separately, but together again? Absolutely not! In this case, reunited doesn't feel so good, but how about the lovely and very subtle combination of peach and silver? Peach and cream roses perched in silver mint julep cups, bridesmaids in peach gowns with silver sashes and groomsmen in grey tuxes with peach ties...an excellent, cool color combination for spring, summer, even winter.

When I saw this Hub I naturally gravitated toward it because my daughter's wedding is in late Summer of this year. I was kind of glad to see that her choice of color-combination theme didn't show up as one of the more popular/common ones. What her choices are shall remain a deep, dark, secret for now LOL. (As a first-/only-time future mother-of-the-bride, I'm discovering how "weirdly secretive" we can be when it comes to some of these "wedding issues". :)

Actually, Lisa, these are not common color combinations which is why I picked them. I was trying to steer brides away from ones which are in my opinion completely overused and honestly, I'm sick to death of seeing! What I have seen way too much is damask, black, red & white, eggplant & silver, and green and brown which indicates either a lack of creativity on the part of the bride or the planner! Hope those aren't any of yours! Thanks for commenting!

      Hi Denise!

Tangerine Tango being declared the color of the Year by Pantone really shot up that color's stock a bunch this year. I'm seeing it everywhere, especially with turquoise. And lots of brides are using it for fall, since it's basically a deep burnt orange which would be perfect for autumn. Now I'm wondering since you're reading my wedding hubs, is there a wedding in store for Ms. Denise, hmmmm?

I'll be holding sunset solemnization and follow by wedding dinner reception on big lawn beside ocean at July this year. My fiancé has an idea of hanging paper lanterns to get soft amber lighting effect. I also have an idea of asking my guests to wear matching color. 'm thinking of orange, yellow and Ivory as theme color. I would love to get your beautiful ideas, ladies :) What color should I request to my guests to wear? Aww...almost forget to share :D I'll be wearing red wedding dress. What do you think? ;)

Eingeetza, those are some very hot colors you've chosen for your wedding, a really tropical vibe. I'm not a big fan of telling guests what to wear at weddings, but if you really love the idea, I would ask them to wear ivory and white tones. That way they won't clash with all the other vibrant colors you've got going on!

Ok I have a little dilemma. I have a light peach dress, a cream dress and champagne shoes but don't want them to be too dull (with all the pastels) so would like to add cranberry red as well in the mix. Do you think it'll work out?? Thanks heaps in advance :-) oh and my groom is wearing a tie with navy, grey and cranberry red stripes. Will it be too out of whack at all you reckon??

    • DIYweddingplanner profile image
      Author

DIYweddingplanner 4 years ago from South Carolina, USA

Wish I could create an inspiration board here! I think the navy would work and definitely the grey. Where were you think of using the cranberry besides the groom's tie? I think if there were just enough pink in the peach and the cranberry, it could definitely work. Put some color swatched together side by side. It's amazing how you can instantly see if the undertones in colors match or work against each other. Working on a pool blue and royal blue mix right now that I wouldn't have thought about doing, but sometimes my brides have a great vision and I just go with it!

      Love the red dress!

I make bridal jewelry and, I custom design wedding invitation packages. A few years ago, I had a bride who wore a ruby red dress with red crystals. Beautiful!

I cater to what I call "Bohemian" brides...brides who don't particularly want a traditional wedding...so odd, or little used color combinations excite me. It helps me, if I get in on the beginning of the wedding planning, to be able to suggest color combinations that the bride is not likely to see somewhere else.

Thanks for this hub. I kind of reaffirmed that I am going in the right direction with my suggestions for this year.

      Bohemian,

You are a woman after my heart. I love non-traditional color choices as well, but many times see the same colors used over and over again. I wish brides would consult with a planner before they make their color choices instead of just following the crowd and choosing something that's over used and not really something that speaks to them as an individual.

I love pink and purple together. I would just make sure they are the same intensity, for instance deep purple and hot pink together or champagne pink and lavender together.

Thanks, Vespa and Janine. I'm working on a bouquet this morning for an Irish bride whose colors are emerald green and silver. Her bouquet choice is pale green hydrangeas and cream calla lilies with blush pink roses. The colors are so pretty together, I think I need to add them to my list!

I adore the rainbow idea! You could even dress your bridesmaids in different colors of the same spectrum. I have also seen a big trend in same color different dresses to spotlight great features and hide others - think one tall, one short, one with great legs, one with great curves ect! Very good hub.

Kim, I love the rainbow idea, too. I kow exactly what you're talking about with the bridesmaids wearing different dresses/same color and think it's one of the greatest trends to hit in a long time. Bridesmaids can actually pick out a style that's flattering to them and they might even wear again, instead of hiding it in the back of their closet!

Thanks, Jamaican Rose. A lot of color combinations hit me when I'm walking down the street or just looking around my surroundings. I'm really loving peach right now...could peach be the new pink? Hmmm...

Sexy royal, I definitely could see those three colors together, but keep them in the same hue. For example: use hot pink, lime green, and lemon yellow together. Or you could go with pastels instead: pale blush pink, light lemon yellow, and mint green. If you put the colors beside each other and something doesn't look right, try another color. Good luck!

      Hi Princess!

A wedding I just did for a bride here in the States married a guy who was Filipino. They then flew to the Philippines and had a second wedding there! Both of her dresses were traditional white, though. Her colors here were hot pink and lime green. Her colors in the Philippines were coral and yellow and everyone wore it, even the mother of the groom!

DIYweddingplanner 4 years ago from South Carolina, USA

Thanks, Talfonso! I think a lot of people don't do the white on white thing because they think it will look too monotone, but the trick is to use different textures to add interest.

I also love olive and topaz and glad to see some forms of gold coming back. I think gold fell out of favor for a long while, but you can definitely use it without it looking cheesy or too flashy depending on the colors you pair it with.

I have looked forward to this and I am not disappoimted. What I would want to know is what would you do for a bride who has been married more than once. The bride is older in her fifties and is partial to a shprt dress. Is this appropriate? Please let me see what you have in mind. Thank.

JamaicanRose, I think a short dress would be perfect for an older bride. I'm really amazed by how many gorgeous short dresses there are available right now that a lot of brides are using for reception dresses, so they can dance and be more comfortable. Honestly, for a second time around bride, I think a shorter dress is more appropriate than some big poofy long one. Older brides can even get away with choosing a color, if they want. My friend, Tess, chose a beautiful silver blue, off the shoulder vintage looking tea length dress with a huge circle skirt. She looked amazing, the dress matched her eyes...AND she could wear it again some other occasion!

That's so funny, because that was such an 80's color combo and now here it is again! Except they tweaked the sea foam and now call it mint. And it's the best thing since sliced bread! I love those two colors paired together. Do what your heart tells you. If you love it, use it.

I know tangerine tango & pink is the color of the year but there is something about the willow blue & white that I find appealing. Maybe the color combo just comes across as cool and not so intense. Anyway no matter what the reason is I love it!

Red brides ARE rare to see, but why shouldn't you be able to wear whatever color you want on the most important day of your life? And with a dress this gorgeous, it would be hard to say no. Judging from the response to that picture, I think a lot of brides would wear a red dress!
