Urban Marketing

Let me just say this. Urban marketing, as it has been labeled, is basically blatant racist stereotypes displayed in media form.

Sometimes I stare in disbelief at commercials by Arrowhead clinics, McDonalds, or when I hear about this latest controversy involving Mary J. Blige singing a friend chicken song for Burger King. When did urban marketing involve providing ideas for the stereotypes of a certain culture? While I do not dispute that desire to market to minorities to increase sales, can it be tastefully done? Sometimes I literally stare in disbelief watching these racist commercials and ask the question; who do you think would buy your product?

What upsets me is seeing two African American men rapping about getting what you need from an automobile accident settlement. What upsets me is that McDonalds concludes urban marketing should manifest itself by having R & B ballets singing about “you can’t get none of my fries.” What upsets me is singing an R & B ballot describing “fried chicken, 3 cheeses, ranch dressing” for a chicken wrap available at Burger King.

What media and marketing efforts result in such blatantly racist stereotypes? Who conducted the focus groups which gave this type of marketing thumbs up?

It’s 2012 and unfortunately nothing seems to have changed except the willingness of some people to accept money to further stereotypes instead of advising executives that marketing to urban markets, by way of stereotype, will result in lost sales.

      Yes, we are cash cows to the corporations. Their job is to maintain mind control while having us (consumers) mindlessly driven to purchase their products.
