Are more girls proposing ?

Updated on November 21, 2013

Roses are red, violets are blue, I want to get married, Do you say "I do?"

It's one of the biggest and most important questions you'll probably ever ask or be asked, "will you marry me?" You need to give it some serious thought.

Just how are you going to set about making the proposal or accepting it, or tempting her to make it! Are you just going to ask the question or will you get an extra special gift to go with it? If so, what will you get? What do most men choose to buy as presents for their wives and girlfriends? Does this change as the relationship develops? When they first start dating, the gifts are flamboyant and extravagant - romantic poems, fine wine and chocolate, bouquets of flowers, elegant jewellery, champagne, and surprise holiday trips, so much effort goes into choosing wonderful romantic gifts for her. The embarrassment of having to ask shop assistants for advice on suitable perfumes or lingerie means that most men have to work hard to buy these presents. After the relationship has lasted for a long time, it’s too easy to become complacent and hurriedly shop around at the last minute for something “that will do”, a book or DVD, flowers from the supermarket.

Remember, it's not just about the gift, but spending quality time together and making romantic gestures. Breakfast in bed (maybe take a rose), curl up on the sofa with popcorn and a good romantic film. Make a playlist of your favourite tunes.

Jewellery always makes a very special gift. If you want to choose a ring, you’ll need to know your girlfriend's ring size, so this is a bit of a tricky one if you’re trying to get a secret gift. Earrings are always a delight, but do check first whether she has pierced ears as you may need to buy clip on ones. Matching gift sets of necklaces and bracelets, necklaces and earrings or watches and bracelets often come in a gift box and make an elegant gift.

If you want to buy a timeless classic, pearls make a wonderful gift, as they can be worn to look smart during the day for office wear, but can be dressed up in a Coco Chanel or Hepburn way for stylish evening wear. Nothing looks more professional than a pair of pearl earrings coupled with a smart ladies business suit and an expensive perfume. A sophisticated watch and bracelet set is also a versatile luxury gift that speaks volumes in the office or sets off the evening’s outfit.

If you want to treat a girl special, treat her to some special lingerie in luxurious silk. The soft touch of silk next to the skin makes it look beautiful the way it hangs and is also very comfortable, being soft to the touch. A stylish silk chemise will be the gift that you can both admire, especially if you take time to wrap it with tissue paper, a gift box and expensive wrapping paper, for a really classic presentation.

Let her pamper herself with a fantastic selection of bathtime goodies. No girl can say no to a nice long relaxing soak, with an array of soaps and lotions to try out. Nice smellies always make a girl feel special. Treat her to a nice bottle of her favourite perfume, or better still choose a perfume for her that you like, so that you can tell her how great she smells!

A nice idea for a gift is a gift subscription to her favourite magazine. The beauty of a magazine subscription is that as every issue arrives, it's a gift that you can keep on opening throughout the year. If you know that she buys a magazine regularly from the supermarket or newsagents, you'll be amazed how much cheaper it is to subscribe rather than paying the cover price. Some magazines also come with great free gifts when you subscribe, so she'll get two gifts in one. Find out what her interests are and treat her to a magazine on everything from sewing, cooking, music and the latest gadgets, to the latest fashions, style and celebrity news.

Finally, It might be a cliché, but there’s a reason why chocolates continue to be one of a girl’s favourite gifts; not only is it delicious, but researchers in New York found that it contains a chemical called phenylethylamine (PEA) that has the same effect on the body as falling in love.

Shop around for some fantastic offers on jewellery, chocolates, perfumes or magazines and you will find a gift that she will cherish.
