Weird Dating Sites -- or, People Are Strange
Online Dating for Weirdos
Strange Online Dating Sites
One of the great things about the internet is that it allows people from all over the world to communicate and find each other based on common interests. For some, this means joining an online forum on gardening, or animals, or whatever.
But what if you are looking for love online? There are many websites that offer online dating, and I am sure most of you have heard or seen the ads for some of the larger and best established sites such as eHarmony, or Match.com
All of these online dating sites will ask you to fill in a questionnaire or form about yourself, including your physical attributes and likes and dislikes in the hopes of matching you up with a kindred spirit. But what if, let's be honest now, you are just a bit (okay very) weird and have eccentic tastes in romantic partners. These plain vanilla dating sites just won't cut it. You need to venture into the world of weird dating sites were every niche, every weird habit, finds acceptance, validation, and a most of all a community of like-minded weirdos waiting for you.
Here are some of weirdest online dating websites on the internet.
Dating Inmates - or Don't Pick Up that Soap in the Showers
- Inmate Penpals
A site that matches you up with inmate penpals. Supposedly the goal is to help inmates overcome literacy problems and establish friendships with positive role models on the outside world. But the profiles often suggest a desire for a meaningful ....
Ever wanted to date a convict? Admit it, who hasn't. The advantages are obvious: you always know where they are, they can't cheat on you (well at least not with members of the opposite sex) and as George on Seinfeld found out, nothing beats conjugal visit sex.
But how do you meet your convict-darling? You might watch Nancy Grace and wait for the next celebrity murder and then establish a pen pal relationship with the next Scott Peterson but the problem with that approach is that the guys and gals who get featured on CNN are the rock stars of the prison world, with thousands of pathetic groupies pursuing them. They have their pick of the loser pile, and may not even notice you. Not even if you send them money for cigarettes.
For those with more realistic aspirations, such as wanting to form a close and loving relationship with someone doing 20 to life, it is best to avoid the celebrities and get to know the quieter, more stable, inmates that have not been spoiled by fame.
The site Inmate.com offers you the chance to develop penpal relationships with inmates. It's supposedly all for a good cause -- giving the inmates a chance to forge positive relationships with people on the outside. But many of the profiles suggest that the inmates are after a little bit more than a penpal friendship.
I especially like the out-dated photos of some of the women prisoners, taken before they got sentenced to life a decade ago.
A DISCLAIMER: This is so I don't get sued. But if it is not obvious to you already, dating or establishing any form of relationship or communication with convicted felons is not safe. So don't do it. View the site. Snicker at the stupidity of others who have fallen for this and move on.
Follow the Herd
Are you tired of the old barn scene? Is it time to send Betsy the Cow to market and now you want some human comanionship? (Okay, that's mean. I apologize to all farmers for the innuendo.)
FarmersOnly.com offers a chance for farmers and other "down to earth" people to meet, and sow some wild oats. This site is needed because as the site's slogan says, "City Folk Just Don't Get it."
The site features a section called "Barnyard Buzz" where singles talk about their online dating experiences.
As far as I know there are no other sites based solely on occupation, so the field is wide open for an entrepreneur to launch an online dating site for Plumbers and the ones who love them. (I imagine the picture profiles would include a lot of butt cracks.)
No It's Not Okay
Dating for Pathetic People
So, you are a grown man/woman and you were a diaper because you want to and not because you have a medical condition? Are you tired of your dates running in horror when they discover the squishy surprise in your pants, while making out? It's time to hook up with like-minded diaper wearers that know that there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing a diaper and soiling yourself on purpose.
DailyDiaper.com features an online dating site for people who like to wear diapers. The front page features men and women posing seductively in their diaper lingerie. The site is free to join, apparently. Which is good because you can use the money you save to pay for a therapist.
Dating for Pet Lovers
Date Me, Date My Pet
The unfortunately named DateMyPet.com promises to hook up pet lovers with other pet lovers, and not lovers with their pets. The idea is not too bad - after all a dog on a leash can be good icebreaker when trying to strike up a conversation with a hot girl at the park -- but I think that this site goes a bit overboard when its users are asked to set up dating profiles for their pets and then people are matched based not just on their own compatibility but also on that of their pets.
Plus, I'm not sure I would want to date a cat lady. When I was in college, I had a girlfriend who had a lot of cats. A lot of cats. My clothes were always infested with cat hair and, well, you get the picture. I haven't talked to her in years but I wouldn't be surprised if one day, when she is old and grey, I see her on the local news in a story about some cat hoarding old lady that had her house raided by the animal authorities because she had a gazillion cats taking up every nook and cranny of her house. But I digress. I should check if she has a profile on this site.
Dating for Fanboys and Girls
Dating for Nerds
Are you a Trekkie obsessed with Spock and learning Klingon? Now you don't have to wait for the next Star Trek convention to find a sexy Borg or brainy Vulcan.
Searching the profiles actually turned up a few good looking women. But are they human?
Dating for Geeks
There is a fine line between a Geek and a Nerd, but apparently Geeks have a lot of options when it comes to online dating. It may have something to do with them being glued to their computer monitor and not being able to meet real people.
There are a lot of sites catering to self-confessed Geeks, including gk2gk.com. Geek to Geek.com promises a site where it's "okay to be who really are."
Being true to yourself is admirable. The pictures in the profiles, not so much.
If you loved the TV show called Beauty and the Geek in which geeks compete for the affections of some hot babes, you are going to be disappointed with this site. There are no hot babes here.
Ayn Rand Dating
If you are obsessed with the works of Ayn Rand, author of such books as the Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged, theAtlasSphere.com offers you the chance to meet up with other like-minded people. A Salon.com reviewer called it "My personal favorite [niche dating and social networking site]." When I checked the site listed over 7,000 dating profiles of people whose world view is so narrow that they only want to date people who think that Ayn Rand was the greatest author and thinker alive.
What's next? When they get old enough to date, I bet there will be a dating site for Harry Potter fans.
Dating for Giants
Are you freakishly tall? If so, tallfriends.com is the place to meet other tall singles.
Features include these intriguingly named sections on the site: Enlarge Circle of Tall Friends by 10 Times - Largest Tall Forums - Largest Tall Blogs - Online Tall Chat - and Daily Tall News.
Barbecue Louie and others tell you why you should date them. This is not made up apparently. The youtube poster says that this video was compiled from the archives of a now defunct 1980s video dating service.
