What Types of Engagement Rings Do Women Like?

Updated on July 24, 2015

Choosing an Engagement Ring

Well the idea behind this article is for women to show what kind of engagement ring they would like to get and for men to maybe get that feedback which may help in making their choice as to which engagement ring to buy for their future fiancee.

Engagements do tend to have fashion trends but the trends tend to change more slowly than say clothing which can differ each year or even each season. However, there is also a lot of tradition involved in engagement rings with some men giving engagement rings tht may have belonged to their mother or grandmother (Williamd and Kate are a prime example of this).

So here I will show a selection of types of engagement rings and hope to get some votes eventually to show which ones women prefer.

A solitaire diamond ring is one of the most popular choices for engagement rings.

The Price of Engagement Rings

The price of engagement rings can vary wildly and really depends on what you can afford to spend. You can even get a very realistic looking engagement ring maybe made from a cultured gem or cubic zirconia and sterling silver for under $50. Or you can get a genuine diamond or other precious stone engagement ring for tens of thousand of dollars.

Tradition is that you spend around 1 months wages on the engagement ring, but in this day and age people may be able to afford to spend more or less than this and only you know what your situation dictates. Most brides to be would not want you to put yourself in huge debt for an engagement ring, after all you are both in this for the long hall so any debt will be hers too in due course!

Types of Engagement Rings

So below I will give details of 10 types of engagement rings and under that will be a poll to vote for your favorite engagement ring from this choice (or none of those!).

This princess cut diamond engagement ring is a classic option where there is just one single diamond in the setting, cut in a modern square shape. This has proved very popular in recent years, taking over from the standard round solitaire which has started to look a little dated (although still popular with a lot of people as it is a classic!) - available in white or yellow gold so you can choose which ever option you prefer. The cut is very modern in it's square shape and this stone is a one carat single diamond. This stone may be more appealing to a modern woman who likes the current trends.

This may be one of the most classic and well loved engagement rings - a simple but beautiful diamond solitaire ring. So if your partner is a fan of the timeless classic then this might be the one for her.

You can choose from how many carats that you want the diamond to be (basically the size of the stone) according to how much you can afford to pay. The ring can be resized if it does not fit.

The Princess Diana style engagement ring was recently brought back into fashion when Prince William gave the ring to Kate Middleton on their engagement. This similar styled ring has a large sapphire surrounded by sparkling round cut diamonds and is crafted in 18K white gold.

If your partner is a fan of the Royal family then this could be a really good choice and with a beautiful blue colored stone it is bound to impress.

Halo cut engagement rings are very popular with a central diamond (or other stone) surrounded by a 'halo' of smaller diamonds. Often these rings also have smaller diamonds around the band as well and make a stunning statement. As these rings contain quite large quantities of diamonds , they are also available in cubic zirconia (which may be shown here if the diamond ring is not available).

This ring features a 0.70 carat round diamond surrounded by 40 smaller diamonds, totaling over 1 carat in total diamond weight. (NB product shown may vary).

Channel Set Engagement Ring

Set in a twist of the band, this channel set diamond engagement ring is also different to the norm but still incorporates traditional diamonds. With a total weight of 0.5 carats this ring looks stunning but does not break the bank on cost. it is available in many sizes and is resizable.

Other choices for engagement rings

You can really make a statement buying an engagement ring, but of course you have to be pretty sure that what you are getting, the lady is going to like! You are likely to know her pretty well though so there are plenty of other options you can go for - some with different colored stones and some in a variety of shapes and you will need to think about whether your bride to be is more of a traditionalist or is a bit more of an individualist.

But also don't forget that most of these rings are returnable, you can get the size changed or you can often exchange. The key is the fact that you were thoughtful and brave enough to choose something yourself - a lot of women will love any ring their future partner chooses just because they chose it and they like it - OK so some may have more fixed ideas, but having the ring there to give to her is a key thing if you want to make a great marriage proposal!

Check out some of the more different options below if you think your bride would want something a bit more out of the ordinary.

Colored Diamond Engagement Ring

Not only can you choose a blue diamond but you can also get a black diamond as the center stone. This ring is set in 14k gold but can also be set in yellow gold or sterling silver.

Thanks cogerson - I had a diamond fall out of a ring before but luckily it was insured so I managed to get it replaced. However the diamond was quite an old cut so it wasn't that easy.

Great has been so long since I have thought about buying an engagement ring....where was this information when I was My wife actually came up with a great idea....her engagement ring is 3 little diamonds then one big diamond and then 3 little diamonds....she actually replaced the big diamond with a cubic zirconia so she would not have to ever worry about the stone coming out....I appreciate all the information you put into this hub....voted up and awesome.
