What should a man wear for a summer wedding? Unbelievably, guys struggle just as much as women do trying to choose the right outfit for social occasions like weddings.

Learn the proper attire for any social event by deciphering the language of the invitation. Let's look at some easy-to-pull together looks for a black tie, formal, 5 pm, and casual wedding to keep you looking effortlessly elegant and suave.

Black Tie Guest Attire

If the invitation is for “Black Tie,” then a tuxedo is necessary.

Black or dark blue are the safest, traditional choices, but an ivory jacket with a shawl collar is a summer classic that will put you at the top of the best dressed list.

Add a white tuxedo style shirt (with pleated front) with a wing or turndown collar and French cuffs and a crisp, white pocket square, and round out your selection with a black bowtie and vest and/or cummerbund.

To complete the look, you need cuff links, studs, and a newly shined pair of black cap-toe lace-ups, patent leather pumps, or black calfskin pumps. Add a subtle spritz of cologne and put a stylish foot forward in your best elegant formal attire look. See how easy it is?

Formal Summer Wedding Attire

This type of invitation gives one more leeway and makes it easier to strike the right balance.

The tuxedo outfit above is a stylish solution, or you can opt for a suit in tropical or superlight weight wool.

The best suit colors to wear to summer weddings are navy or charcoal gray paired with a white or French blue shirt. Accessorize with silk or woven ties—considered more formal than woolen ties—in solids or small dotted patterns.

Club ties and repp ties are other good choices and for a classy look use a matching pocket square. Socks should match the color of the trousers and shoes should be a black cap-toe or split-toe lace-up.

5 pm Weddings

Proper attire for the 5 pm wedding can be tricky because while it is more formal than morning weddings, it doesn’t command the formality of an evening wedding.

To stay on the safe side, opt for the same suit and shirt choices as for the formal wedding, but add a sartorial spin by adding a fashion forward tie and pocket square or braces.

Woolen ties in brighter shades or larger patterns on ties add a nice pop of color without seeming too edgy. Accessorize shoes and socks as for the formal wedding attire.

Casual Weddings

What should a man wear for a summer wedding if it is casual? Here is the invitation you love to receive because there are so many ensemble possibilities for you to look great without stressing over every little detail.

If you want to wear a suit, poplin, gabardine, or linen are all comfortable choices that keep heat and moisture to a minimum. Tan and off-white look cool and summery without being too casual, and you can wear a favorite shirt and tie combination.

Another good look that is easy to put together is the classic navy blue blazer with navy, charcoal gray or khaki pants. Pair it with the dependable but always good-looking white or blue shirt, and accessorize with a tie or leave the collar open and ditch the tie.

Either choice is acceptable for this type of wedding. Match socks to pant color and choose wingtips or loafers for a more laid-back look.
