5 Must-Know Tips on How to Compliment a Guy

Updated on December 24, 2012

Men like compliments too so if you want him to stay then you need to figure out how to compliment a guy. What are the compliments men crave for or want to hear? What can you say to make him feel special and needed?

Compliment him on his job

When it comes to “how to compliment a guy,” one of the things you can do is to compliment him on his job. If he’s doing great at his job then let him know. There are plenty of men out there who are good at what they do but no one bothers telling them that. You’re setting yourself apart from other women if you compliment him on his job. Just be sure you don’t compliment him about his money because that would make you look like a gold digger.

Don’t go overboard

You might be going on and on about how great he looks, how nice he smells, how you like his hair, his dimples, etc. If you go overboard and won’t stop rambling on then you’re going to look fake. You don’t want him to think you’re just making things up. Compliment him in a way that you would also like to be complimented. Tell him he looks great but don’t go on and on about it. You need to be sincere when you give him compliments otherwise it’s going to mean squat to him.

Tell him he has great taste

You need to boost his ego a little bit and praise his taste. Men do like to think that they have great taste when it comes to music and movies and even books. Tell him you like his choice of music and movies. Ask him about what great movies are out there and what’s worth watching. He’s going to like it if he thinks that you trust his judgment when it comes to entertainment.

Compliment him about his clothes

When you compliment him about his clothes, don’t just say “you look nice in that shirt.” What you can do is tell him how he looks in it like “that shirt really brings out your eyes. I like it” or “you always look good when you’re wearing that color.” There are not a lot of women who would bother complimenting their man about how he looks great with those clothes. He would really appreciate it if you take the time to notice.

Compliment him about being smart

A man can be smart without being a know-it-all. But if your man is smart then be sure to tell them. Now, he may not be smart overall but usually, he’s smart or great at something. Find out what he’s good at and compliment him on that. If he’s great with cars or machines then tell him. It would make him happy and even boost his confidence.

If you’re trying to figure out how to compliment a guy, just be sure you don’t ramble on or mislead him. Remember, going overboard will make you seem fake. And don’t forget to smile when you give him compliments.

I find that men appreciate genuine compliments. If you are only giving compliments to get something in return, they generally pick up on that. Be specific about something he is good at or does well.
