Where to Buy a Wedding Cake Stand or Cupcake Stand

Updated on January 4, 2013

One of the most important visual elements of a perfect wedding is finding just the right way to display the cake. The cake is often one of the very first things your guests will notice when they arrive and it not only becomes the focal point for pictures but is also one of the things most likely to be remembered about your event.

Fortunately, there are all kinds of beautiful and unique choices when it comes to selecting a wedding cake stand. You can choose from round and square plateaus of glass, silver, brass, or even copper for single tier cakes or linear displays. For more traditional layered cakes, your options will include stacked and cascading stands in a wide range of sizes and styles.

Thinking about doing something unique? A multi-tiered wedding cupcake stand can provide an infinite number of decorating and display options that will help you create impressive and delicious eye candy for your guests! One trend I am seeing a lot more of this season is incorporating both varieties by including a traditional wedding cake and a cupcake stand to eliminate the hassles of trying to cut and serve cake during the reception. Guests can simply walk up and grab a cupcake to enjoy as a mini personal sized cake!

These stands can also be used to create a stunning display by incorporating flowers, fresh fruit, or chocolate covered strawberries. If you are planning a formal reception and are looking for an elegant and sophisticated look, you may want to consider going with a garden scroll style stand to create a fairy tale effect that makes your stacked wedding cake look as if the layers are floating.

Exploring Your Options

Whether you decide to go with a traditional stand or a cupcake stand, there are plenty of gorgeous and affordable options to choose from online. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to see all kinds of different weddings through a friend who owns a local venue and have put together a collection of some of the more memorable set ups I have seen. I will offer a few suggestions based on my own experience and share some creative ideas that will help you plan your event.

Wilton 6 Tier Cupcake Stand

Wilton is one of the most trusted and well-known brands when it comes to products like these. This one features an 18 inch base plate with a laced finish around each of the tiers. This would be ideal for a larger wedding. It can be used with all six tiers or you can customize it to the size you need.

One of the best displays I've ever seen used this to present 3 layers of cupcakes with a fourth layer holding a large colorful floral bouquet. The icing on the individual cakes matched the colors in the flower arrangement and the effect was brilliant!

Cascading Cake Stands

If you want to open the door to an almost unlimited number of decorating ideas, a 3 tier cascading option makes a great choice. Some of my favorites here are a crystal set that left each layer gracefully suspended as if nothing was below it at all. This creates a stunning presentation for evening or nighttime receptions although I have also seen it done very well during the day.

By far and away, the most jaw-dropping wedding cake stand I have ever seen was an 8 tier cascading display accompanied by pillared candles that formed a waterfall style effect around a champagne fountain. Even if you decide to opt for something a little bit more on the simple side, there are plenty of beautiful products to choose from.

Round and Square Plateau Stands

This is a great option for a classic wedding and will generally offer the most in the way of color and base material options. I've seen absolutely gorgeous presentations using embossed silver, crystal, glass, and even bronze.

The one word of caution I will offer here is that it is usually a good idea to avoid mirrored plates. While they look great online and in staged photographs, they are very difficult to keep free of frosting, fingerprints, and dust during your event. Planning your big day can be stressful enough without having to worry about your cake tower.

If you are looking for something that will allow you to incorporate flowers or greenery around your cake, a garden scroll stand will provide you with graceful curves and the added room you need for additional decorations as well.

The combination of traditional wedding cake and cupcake for convenience is such a great idea. I've seen it a few times recently.
