The Perils of Being Jan Brady

Marsha Marsha Marsha!!

We've all heard the term 'middle child syndrome' famously referring to how middle children are thought to be neglected in the family structure because of their placement in the middle of siblings. Another 'famous' image of middle children is of Jan from the Brady Bunch; the middle child in the female Brady Bunch girls says "Marsha, Marsha, Marsh". We've all heard that middle children are 'loners, resentful, jealous' and often don't fit in. There have been numerous studies and researchers on Birth Order and surprisingly there is very very little work on specifics on the middle child compared with research on the first and last born children.

The Secret Power of Middle Children

New research now actually upturns the decade sayings that middle children are resentful, jealous and often don't succeed in their lives compared to their older or younger siblings.

Dr Catherine Salmon; University of Redlands Associate Professor of Psychologyand Katrin Schumann; educational consultant researched middle children and published their findings on middle children in their book The Secret Power of Middle Children. They have taken a spin on middle children and highlighted the real and perceived negative impacts of being the middle children though how this actually creates a more positive and actually the most successful sibling in the birth order. How their ordeal of being the middle child has actually transformed them into successful people.

"For, as we discovered during our research, the stereotype does not correspond to reality. Far from being doomed to failure and loneliness, middle children are more likely than their siblings to be successful and enjoy strong social lives and flourishing careers. The apparent disadvantages they endure in childhood turn out to be beneficial, in many cases giving them the attributes of empathy, independence, articulacy and creativity."

Negotiation

Middle children are excellent at negotiations. Being part of the middle child is being squeezed by the demands of the older and younger sibling or child. Often as the oldest child already has the attention of the parents or their needs are seen as 'more' important as they have the 'first' experiences, things and need to go to school and also they at that stage don't have the siblings as rivalry for attention, lesson ect and the younger child ' the baby' in the family is often seen as in need of things and are just starting out so need more help in things and if they need something they can just 'cry' to mum and dad to get their needs and wants met. Sometimes the parents have already decided that the youngest child will be the last child and therefore want to 'splurge' as much 'indulgence' while they still have the chance. By the 3rd or 4th child parents often have enough parenting experience and therefore feel more relaxed in their approach with the 3rd or 4th child. With the middle child, because truth be told, they actually don't receive as much attention, so they need to find another way to get their needs and wants met. So they often figure out what the other person's feelings, thoughts and how to accommodate the other person whilst still getting what they want.

Middle children often make great leaders because of the negotiation and empathy skills required. The 52% was the minimum number of USA presidents where middle children. Tony Blair,Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt andJohn F. Kennedy. This flips the notion that first born son's had the strongest personalities thus made the best presidents / natural leaders. President Kennedy demonstrated his gifts that middle children often possess and kept cool under pressure to advert a possible nuclear war during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

Some of the greatest leaders where Middle kids like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr..

Empathy

As the middle children often don't receive as much attention compared to their younger or older siblings, they often sensitive to people that are less fortunate. They often have very high empathy for people and both the trials and tribulations of other people. Middle children want to understand where other people are coming from, other peoples feelings, how a decision affects someone, how they can help. People often say they feel comfortable and accepted by middle children. Middle kids have an extreme amount of patience probably because they had to wait a in their childhood waiting for their time to come. They are good at delaying gratification which is considered 'civilized behavior"

Justice Seekers

Middle children often feel that they were 'neglected' or not given as much attention compared to their younger and older siblings. They felt things weren't ''fair' in how much attention was given or that things weren't divided up equally. The positive 'consequence or effect this has on middle children as they are often 'justice seekers'. They are more empathetic, empathetic and place a lot of attention on the 'under dogs' in community or disadvantaged people. A very high proportion of middle children are in 'caring' fields such as disability, counselling, life coaching, prison system, advocacy work, homelessness, drug and alcohol areas. Other areas that middle children gravitate towards is fundraising, volunteering, being part of community A groups like Rotary, or Apex. These are all places where they feel they can make a difference and attend to people needs and wants.

Independence

Middle children, because of the demands of being squeezed by the older and younger child often don't receive much attention in the family, because of this they often feel that their needs and wants are not met sometimes in comparison to their older or younger siblings. This has a 'positive' consequence in making them independent. They have to forage or find ways to achieve their goals or wants and needs. They are often very resourceful, good at networking, and finding ways to achieve their means. if their mother or father isn't able to take them somewhere they think right they aren't able to help me for this situation, so what can I do to help myself and get what I want? Instead of waiting around forever and sometimes knowing that it might come within the time frame that they want, middle kids take the initiative to do things for themselves instead of waiting or expecting other people to do things for them.

The other effect is that many often aren't as close or attached or way their patents or families decisions int their lives compared to other siblings probably because they don't have the most fondest memories of childhood.
