Pain is bio-psycho-social. You do not need to have a physical injury to suffer pain. Emotional distress is in fact a big component of how much pain we feel. We have all heard old sayings like "broken heart", "it made me sick to my stomach", "it was so creepy it made my skin crawl". Pain is controlled by the brain in response to various stimuli that we receive, our past experiences, and current perceptions of what happened. If you step on a nail it is pretty simple to understand why you might feel pain. However, the pain we feel when we end a relationship, lose a loved one or suffer from depression is a bit more difficult to quantify. Sometimes pain can be longstanding for no apparent reason. I have a friend that suffered a traumatic amputation of his lower leg yet still suffers pain in his foot. The brain and nervous system can be a weird place. Your pain is completely understandable. Good luck I hope that you will be able to get over your emotional hurt with time.
