What is the best way to tell if someone is lying to you?

I always say I am going to go by what a person does and not what they say ~ mainly because I think people just lie too much.

The best way to tell if someone is lying to you, eye contact. Typically those who are not trained will always look away when they lie. They will not move their whole head, but watch theirs eyes themselves, it may be fast or instant but they will move. Bigger ones are typically changes in speech pattern, if they are twitch at all.

I know someone is lying if they ignore a question. For example, if your boyfriend's phone is getting blown up with texts and you ask who it is and his response is "no one," then obviously he's hiding something, which means the lies will start soon enough. If you can't be open and honest with someone, the lies just snowball because you need to keep making up lies to go along with the one original lie.

simple body language tells on them every time.  You just have to know what to look for.  example. When  Asking a question, if one looks to the right they are being honest.  Looking left suggests they are using their imagination and are making things up.  There are many more  signs as well.  Like fidgety hands or focusing on other things to avoid answering in full.  it's not hard.  A great book is called Never be lied to again. Not sure the author but google is great i guess.

I agree with Johnrr631992: Eye contact.  The eyes say it all.  People who are lying look away, or down.  Or the individual hesitates before he/shes answers.  Some people who lie are very convincing, but the truth always reigns.  Lies always eventually catch up with people.  Nothing good ever comes from lying.

    There are several ways:
    -no eye contact with you
    -they seem uncomfortable
    -they are squirming
    -they may change the subject
    -they may turn red
    -ignore your question/statement
    -hesitation before answering
    -stuttering
Although some "advanced" liars can still lie and show no signs, most liars will show some of these signs.  Hope this help you!

There really is no "best way" to tell if someone is lying. In the words of Ronald Reagan "Trust but verify". :-)
In all honesty I believe one has to question themself as to why they have doubts about what is being told to them. The next step is to (Trust Yourself). If something doesn't feel right to you then it's probably not right. Most of our major regrets in life can be attributed to us ignoring our own instincts and giving people "the benefit of the doubt". This is a conman's dream! Never try to sell yourself on believeing someone! If you have doubts don't dismiss them!
Trust like Respect has to be earned over time. The only way to trust someone is after observing them demonstrate honesty and integrity time and time again.

I have dealt with my fair share of liars. Eye contact is one way to tell if someone is lying to you. That is not always the case because we have good liars that feel no remorse for lying, so they are able to look you in the eye while they spew dishonesty. I dislike those types of liars the most. Most people know lying is wrong and many have a conscious.

Want to know how I tell if someone is lying to me? I make them prove the truth to me often enough to know I will be checking. My oldest son never knows when I might pop up somewhere. If he is not where he is supposed to be, he will hear about it and so will his friends.

I also listen to my gut. If something feels "off" about someone's story, chances are?  It's "off".

Eye contact and body language usually are a good indication. People often fidget or stammer when they are trying to cover up something. Although, I have met some individuals who are quite talented in making up stories and you wouldn't know if they just lied to you. It's always better to tell the truth.

with the eye contact that can be faked,  in psychology we learn these signs and sometimes we are right to guess if the person is lying or not BUT by learning it we also learn how to fake the sign.

so if he/she is naive and no nothing about this, then sure you can read that he/she is lying but if she/he has knowledge on this things then its really hard to tell.

Paying attention to their tone and body language are key. Each person may have a different tell, but even the best of poker faces has one. Staying observant is important.

If someone is lying to me they don't look me in the eye. That is how I have caught out my kids and my husband because they won't look me in the eye when they are telling me.

i think it depends on the liar , if he always lies by nature  so never mind and no need to answer to his lies but if he lies to u for some advantage or interest  or to make a fool of u  in this case it s better to tell him that u cant believe him easily
