I consider marriage to be an expression of one's devotion to another.

That depends on who you ask. I believe in God and Christ.. Therefore my answer is an absolute yes.

But for those who don't believe in God or Christ I believe marriage is circumstantial, as things vary..

I believe absolute devotion is the main priority in my book, and believe that is what marriage stands for.

It says, I pick you and I will show everyone I pick you. For life.

I don't really understand what difference you mean by need or necessity though?  It is up to the individuals involved in a relationship to decide if they need a legal framework to justify their relationship.
Marriage is a way of acknowledging  that two people are in a committed relationship.  It provides a legal framework for two people and their property to come together, it also makes provision for new property and children.
If two people want to be together, they do not need to get married for me, if that is what you mean.

It totally depends on who you ask. For some their lives do not feel complete until they marry the one they love. For others, such as myself, don't feel the need to get married. I personally feel that we have been together for seven years and have a son together. What is getting married going to change for me. I feel as if it's not going to change anything except it would be a pain to plan and an extra expense. I do, however, support those who do want to get married as it is completely up to them.

For me marriage is a sacral matter and it depends on the couple on how they will perceive and react on it. It's difficult to say if it is a need or necessity  since it varies in every places and culture.

    I don't think it's either. Marriage is a life-style choice.
One can be happy without ever getting married. The only true needs we have are (air, water, food, shelter, and clothing). Everything else falls under the catagory of (want or would be nice to have). People get married because they (choose) to get married. The words (need or necessity) imply that one has no options.

I tend to think it is neither a need nor a necessity, at least not in most of the industrialized world of today.

I think, therefore, it is more of a desire.

In the days of old, people needed marriage in order to procreate a family to help work in the fields and to defend the homestead, but things are very different today.

Indeed, there are people, who may feel that they must have a mate, and, who knows, perhaps they do. There is nothing wrong with having a strong desire to get married - I would just recommend taking the time to choose wisely.
