Why do we think that someone else can make us happy?

I am responsible for my own happiness. My partner and friends are the whip cream and the cherry on top. Giving the state of my well being over to another is preposterous. It may be why so many are miserable.

Because it is a way of laying the blame elsewhere - you made me unhappy/do that, what utter nonsense no one can get into anybodies' head and twiddle little knobs about.

Maybe we think that since we can't make ourselves happy with what we are doing now, others are the ones who should keep us happy. Some consider that the world should be bright and happy to make us the same.

We're just not bothered to try hard enough ourselves and live on the hope that others are. Possibly its a way of 'gathering happiness', the more you have the happier you feel.

Happiness comes from within one's self, and not from others.

Only speaking for myself, but I cannot make myself happy that way that 4th wife does.  Call me weak, but I need someone to make me happy.

Not only are there lots of people that expect others to make them happy they also blame others for making them unhappy. Whenever someone refuses to take responsibility for (their) choices and decisions in life they are quick to point their finger at everyone but them self. Our lives for the most part are the result of choices and decisions we have made along the way.
We get to (choose) our own friends, lovers, and spouse. We also get to (choose) who we spend our time with. Most people don't want to do the "introspective thinking" to determine what they want and need (prior) to making a (choice) or (decision). It always comes back to you. You are responsible for (your) life. Once you acknowledge and accept this as fact it's empowering because you can control you! You can learn from mistakes and make better choices!

As most of our projects, we don't want to blame ourselves for failure, so we satisfy ourselves that being happy is out of our control.
