An old quote states: "Men marry women hoping they will never change and women marry men hoping they'll change overtime."
Benhard Ighner probably said it best in his song lyrics: "Everything must change, Nothing stays the same, Everyone will change, No one stays the same, The young become the old, Mysteries do unfold, Cause that's the way of time, Nothing and no one goes unchanged."
Each of us evloves over the years and our desires and goals also change. Communication is our GPS system for figuring out if we are "growing together" or "growing apart".
Having said that I also believe there are some people in both genders that play "bait & switch" when it comes to attracting a mate. They show their "authentic" selves (after) there is an emotional commitment from their mate or marriage.
