Is living together before marriage a good idea, why or why not?
I think it's a good idea, mainly to find out whether you and your partner are truly "compatible" enough to handle living in the same space.
It worked out pretty well for me. My now-wife and I lived together for about a year and a half before we got married. We've now been married for fourteen years. I guess that means she's gonna keep me.
Personally speaking I can't imagine marrying anyone without knowing if I could be happy living with them. Some people think living together ruins their chance of getting married. However if living together does that they should be grateful they weren't married because they would have been living together after the wedding.
People who really want to get married tend to do so regardless of their living arrangements and no one I know of has gotten a divorce and blamed it on the fact that they lived together prior to marriage. People that quote statistics like that may as well say that couples where each person has two legs are more likely to divorce than couples where one person has one leg. You can find stats all over the place. In fact one statistic states that 52% of all weddings take place between couples who lived together prior to getting married! That's a slight majority.
Awhile back I wrote a hub on this topic. http://dashingscorpio.hubpages.com/hub/ … ng-Married
From my experience, it's a good idea. You understand what it would be like if you get married to that person. You know what to expect and will not be shocked after the marriage. It's the ultimate test as to how you two get along with each other. For us, cohabitating made us stronger.
I will object to it. Marriage is all about love and responsibilities. Why do you have to test it and see whether you are compatible. Such marriages also fail. If you love, why not marry? Why do you want to hesitate?
For me, it's absolutely necessary if you intend to get to that step. My girlfriend and I just celebrated our first anniversary and we've been living together about 8 months. There are too many unknowns to leave something like that to chance. Also it means more sex, which is cool.
It's a good idea.
If you are going to commit to someone for the rest of your life you probably should know if you can live together first.
