At what age should girls become Women?

B.B.C. Television news service has caused contoversy after refering to the Women's judo champion as 'a 19 year old girl'.

In my eyes a girl becomes a woman by law at 18 so that would count. By definition though a woman is a female adult, and an adult is someone who is fully grown (to include mentally). So likely there are probably very few women or men that are 19.
Realistically I'm sure they didn't give the word much thought when they were saying it.

Legally at the age of 18 in the U.S. one can vote, sign contracts, get married without parental consent, and if a crime is committed they'd automatically be tried as an adult.
However there will always be people who view anyone whose age contains the world teen (18 & 19) in it as still being a boy or girl. Parents in particular have the most difficult type seeing their child or any other young person for that matter who is a teenager as being an adult.
We also witness this when it comes to dating and marriage. If a 19 year old woman dated or married a 35 year old man. A lot of people could not look past the age difference even though they are two "consenting adults". This is especially true if you're the parent of the 19 year old! Most likely you'd still see her as being a girl.

There are physical changes that can cause a Girl to be called a woman and the same is true for boys becoming men.

There there are laws that says when you are legally a man or woman.

However, I have known members of both sexes who continue to act like children, even after meeting the legal age and going through the physical changes.  Some people just never grow up.

As far as the sportscaster who called a 19-year-old a girl instead of a women, he made a mistake, unless the person was competing in a match for girls that cover an age group of 16-20 for example.
