In many respects I believe women are more competitive than men especially when it comes to the daily or mundane things in life.
For instance I don't know of any men who get exciting about watching the "Red Carpet" of any awards show. Comments about gowns, shoes, hair, and jewelry are boring. And yet People Magazine will post a photo of two female celebrities wearing similar outfits with the caption: "Who wore it best?"
Boob jobs, butt implants, tummy tucks, face lifts, lotions & night creams are primarily purchased by women. In fact 90% of diet commercials feature a woman sponsor targeting women. Most women will tell you they do these things for (themselves). However (being the "envy" of other women) and a magnet for men is probably a factor as well.
I've personally witnessed middle aged women put down younger women in their 20s simply because of their youthful appearance. They also become angry when men their age pursue relationships with younger women.
Some people never get over things that were said to them during their formative years. The swan looks in the mirror and sees an ugly duckling. A thin woman sees fat. They're obsessed with perfection!
Marketing is essentially telling people you are NOT complete! You could look better, feel better, have better sex, attract the opposite sex, get more respect and perks out of life (IF) you bought this product!
Most men on the other hand are told: "If you become successful enough you can have any woman you want!" This explains why an 86 year old Hugh Hefner can marry a 26 year old centerfold. Odds are this would not happen if it was a rich 86 year old woman.
Men place a higher value on women's youth and physical attributes. Courage and having a high self-esteem are required for women to ignore noise around them and be happy in their own skin.
Sometimes it's getting old enough to stop caring what others think!
