   When is thinking to much?
   
   I have been from day one overthinking simple things. I honestly don't know how to not do it. My girlfriend will tell me "you're overthinking" and thats that. But I've never learned how to gradually tell myself its going to be okay Matt.

   I too over think many times and tend to offer TMI mainly to explain myself. It seems like my mind is constantly running and I have to do things like mindfulness or meditation to shut it down. The are other techniques I use too, but then that would be TMI ;-)

   You're thinking too much if you're mentally exhausted. Another sign is when others point it out to you. At some point they'll avoid conversations with someone who is so detailed.
   What your girlfriend may be saying is you (over analyze) on things that are not worth it.
   Most conversations are nothing more than idol musings, observations, comments, or trivia related. Very few people are interested in getting "granular" with every topic that comes up.
   Step away from the microscope!
   Most (social outings) and conversations are about having (lighthearted fun). They're not in a classroom mindset.
   People often avoid those who are always "serious".
   Eventually one should get to a point where they can recognize which people enjoy deep conversations and which ones only want to engage at a high level or superficially and adjust.

   Yes, iam one of those people who over think and can be emotional at the same time. I crave deep conversations and despise shallow conversation. I love learning about the deeper things in life and how it all connects. To the point I stayed up late one night before surgery, not because I was nervous, no. Because I was watching the surgery on tv before I had it done. I have used medication and meditation to relax and sleep. Most of the time my brain just doesn't shut down. I am not sure how my hubby puts up with me sometimes. Writing and commenting on HubPages has helped me a lot. Phew, this question has caused some relief already. Thank you for asking Matty.

   Matty.....First of all, it's TOO much......not to much.
   Better you think long and hard, take your time and weigh options, than not give something enough time and brain power.  You claim you do this with "simple" things, but who is judging whether they are simple or not?  Are they simple to you or are you being directed to think they're simple issues yet you find them serious or major issues that require much thought?
   True Matt, most situations we deal with in life on a daily basis, ultimately end in a positive light.  However, we don't know this for certain unless and until it does happen.  If you can admit that you are "overthinking," you can also do something to curtail this obsessiveness.  Let your girlfriend help you by opening up a discussion about anything that is totally unrelated to the topic that is invading your thoughts.
   It also helps to get involved in activities that requires use of your mind more than physical.  Word games, crossword puzzles, logic puzzles.....whatever you might like.  A game of scrabble is always a good way to keep your mind focused on fun rather than problems.
   If you practice at this repeatedly, it becomes easier and more automatic.  I believe eventually you'll get a good handle on this Matt.  Get more exercise and fresh air also....and eat healthy.  Keeping your body healthy always help our mind.  Good Luck.
