Planning a Wedding

There are a lot of different things that go into planing a wedding. One of the most important things to think about is the atmosphere of the evening. Everyone wants the night to be a memorable one that will never be forgotten. Music is one of the most important things we can use to set the mood. Are you wanting everything to be mystical and romantic? Are you wanting more of a party atmosphere? The songs you choose will set the mood for your event.

DJ, Band, or Do-It-Yourself

How do you select what type of music to have for one of the most important days of your life? Do you have hire a big band, do you have a DJ play all your favorite songs, or do you choose the most cost efficient choice and do it yourself? With the technology that is available today, many people that are on a tight budget are able to use their own sound system or the house system at the location of their event and save hundreds, even thousands of dollars, without taking away from the atmosphere of the night. Put a family member or friend in charge of operating the music and making any announcements that might need to be made, such as when it is time to cut the cake, introduce the bridal party, etc. This is actually a more personal touch than hiring a DJ that doesn't know your family and friends. Make sure the person you choose is outgoing and very comfortable with speaking in front of people and they must be able to operate the sound equipment.

Timeline for the Evening

The next step whether you are using a band, a DJ, or handling the music yourself is to write out a timeline of the evening. This is the most important part of planning the evening. It isn't enough to just have a list of songs you want to play though out the night. You need to decide what songs you want played before the ceremony, during the ceremony, after the ceremony, at the reception, during dinner, first dances, etc. so that everything runs smoothly and you don't end up walking down the aisle to "Baby Got Back".

Don't be afraid to use instrumental music during cocktail hour and times people are chatting. Sometimes less is more. There is nothing worse than trying to greet guests over loud music. Music should be in the background during these greeting times and not the foal point.


Personalize Your Song List

Pick songs that mean something to you. This is your night! You want it to be special for your guests, but you also want it to be memorable for you and your spouse. If you have a song that is "your song", by all means, play it! If it is personal and it doesn't fit your venue, then play it back at the honeymoon suite. Music can make your day feel personal. Don't forget to include songs for the Father Bride Dance, Mother Son Dance, etc. You can even get family input on the songs.

      I was always being asked to burn wedding songs. The songs From This Moment, The Gift, On this Day (by David Pomeranz) is always on the list of the most requested wedding songs.
