I had some horrible first dates and I'm sure that you had some too.  Sometimes they were horrible because I was careless and sometimes...Not.  Your take?

My first date ever was quite an expierience. I was 16 and had met my first true love. We went out with a bunch of friends to a mountain top. There were alot of people there hanging out. The guy I was with was drinking and decided he had to urinate. He starts yelling, "Help!" He had slipped down the mountain a bit and I had to save him.

It was funny and I will never forget that night. However, the humor did shift to a more romantic scene underneath the star light sky as we danced and had our first kiss. It ended up being one of the best nights of my life.

He later died in a car accident at a young age. Now, every time I hear "The Dance" by Garth Brooks, I always think of that night.

That really is bittersweet, UK.  I must have really cared for him (I wonder if he pretended to slip wink )  I'm really sorry to hear about his accident.  That's really awful...If you don't mind me asking, how old were you back then?

    Yup. Sixteen.

First go-round was a setup.  My Dad and Linda's Dad set us up, two Montana ranchers pushing their kids to go out together.  Which might have been a good thing despite her being a year or two older than me...except we had absolutely zero chemistry between us.  Zip.  Nada.

But we went along with it.  Sort of.  I had my Dad's red 1955 Ford pickup, and we went to--a dance?  Darned if I know.  Neither one of us wanted to be there, remember?  I DO remember that I dropped her off about midnight and instead of heading home (3 miles farther west), I turned around and headed upcountry about 25 miles--and THAT was DEFINITELY to a dance.

Where I met a girl--also older than me (a year or more at that time looked like really something).  Which led to me chasing her for a few weeks, not showing up till 4:00 a.m. more than once, sliding that pickup sideways down a narrow dirt road in the Helmville Canyon and bouncing it off the side of a guardrail  east of Missoula (not all on the same night).

I don't know how it worked out for Linda's father, but mine?  He paid BIG for setting me up! lol

I feel like I know you pretty well, Fred.  You told me this story on one of your hubs, about having close-calls with things that had tires and a steering wheel!  It must have been something as I can remember it.  You're obviously a good writer my friend smile

Why do we always remember our "first"?

Ok you got a good giggle out of me . . but you have to remember I could be the queen of first dates. . .and since the list go on and on . .the first one that came to my mindtonight was one that came to Westchester airport in his plane (he was coming from eastern long island). . .anyway we had a quick dinner in New Caanan (not too far from the airport) and I knew right away I wanted it to be quick .. . for the only question he asked me (and asked it over and and over again) was "did I think there was chemistry between us" At first I shied away from the question and then finally I could take it no more .. so by the time he asked me for thr 5th time the words just spewed out of my mouth. . "IF THERE WAS YOU WOULD NOT HAVE TO ASK" . . still dont think he got it for he kept calling for weeks after that!
