How is marriage defined?.
Which is the better definition of Marriage;
"Marriage is a commitment between one man and one woman." or,
"Marriage is a commitment between consenting adults"
The first definition is easily understood, the second could be same-sex, polygamy, polyandry or a group, (A "Nest" as the Church of all Worlds would call it.) The thrust of this question is asking; Does the second definition have equal validity with the first?
From my own point own point of view , marriage is a commitment between a man and a woman..let's makes this clear , for a man and woman and not for same man to man or woman to a woman. I am not against same sex relationship , so long as they won't bring their relationship into spiritual rituals for i believe it is sacred and it is so clearly stated for man and woman. I respect others belief and practices. I believe in the divinity and sanctity of marriage , and having both sexes there means to me they are making stain on its divinity.
its a commitment ofcourse so does insanity...
-an important part in everyone's life.....
One man and one woman....for life. At least that's the way Jesus described it and I don't think anyone is going to be able to say he was wrong....seeing how he is God and all.
A couple does not need to be married to be "commited" to one another. Some people have been together for 5, 10, or 20+ years without getting married and I'm sure they would consider themselves to be in a "commited relationship". With a divorce rate of 50% or higher it's not a slam dunk to say married couples are "commited". As for defining marriage each couple gets to define their own marriage as well as follow the laws and customs of their state/country or culture. We don't get to impose our beliefs on other relationships. Some couples have "open marriages", others live in places in the world where polygamy is practiced and so on. The bottom line is all that matters is (the person you marry) agrees with (you) as to what marriage means.
Thank you for your answer and voted up. However you seem to misunderstand. The question is not about "Committed relationships" it's about making the commitment to a marriage.
iantoPF, Would you not say marriage is a (relationship)between two people who have "commited" to one another? It seems as though you're saying a marriage is defined by (gender) and not by the commitment. Divorce is at 50%, nothing is set in stone.
In my opinion when a man and a woman are in a committed relationship without a marriage certificate, they are married in the eyes of God
Marriage is about a loving bond between a man and woman from diverse family background. Love and care keep them together to face any ordeals in life. When you work for the success of your marriage, it is heaven.

What is your definition of marriage itself? Let's compare definitions to discuss marriage equality.I think there's a confusion regarding the definition of marriage because there are different assumptions about what marriage is on both sides of the marriage equality issue and people aren't bothering...

Until I began paying attention to religious and conservative secular perceptions of marriage I had no idea that marriage could be so easily debased by so many. To value marriage as a space entirely reserved for sexual propagation of the species is, it seems, a debased sense of what marriage...

What is your personal definition of marriage? In some cultures, prearranged marriages are normal. My husband's sister and her husband only knew each other for one week. Now they have eight children and have done fine. Does love have to be part of marriage?

I need help with a homework assignment, so I am asking, What is your definition of Marriage? Here is my argument. There is so much debate over the issue of same sex relationships and if they should be allowed. But is being in a gay relationship the same as being in a heterosexual one, or...

When is a hug more than a hug between a man and a woman who is NOT his wife?If a man hugs a woman in front of his wife, where is the line that it has gone too far? The "hug" is fine. Does it cross the line with a kiss on the cheek? A kiss on the neck? Prolonged hugging?...

I struggle with the gay rights issue, with most partisan topics I can see the other side of the argument and even have doubts about my own position, this is not one of them. The congregation of people getting together to celebrate their hatred of gays and equality at Chik Fila makes my bile rise I...
