Will Trump try to get the ruling on gay marriage reversed?
Gay marriage is still controversial, and some people want to get the Supreme Court to reverse its 2015 ruling on marriage rights. What will happen to same-sex marriage under Trump's presidency?
Trump said he wasn't going to seek to reverse same sex marriage, as a pro-marriage guy. Courts have reversed rulings before, and the Oberfell decision was legislation from the bench "out of whole cloth", but the emotional aftermath would be a nightmare he doesn't need.
If overturned, you're still legally joined in states that recognize it but may not be for state purposes in states that don't.
I think we'll see the ending of same sex marriage as a legal whip against conservatives and Christians.
If you preach traditional marriage, the civil rights act will no longer be warped to say you can be punished for hurting the feelings of homosexuals and private schools sued for teaching such messages.
That LBGT activists will not longer be allowed to sue florists and bakers who refuse to provide service they find blasphemous, while state's civil rights commissions repeatedly said the exact opposite situation is legally protected speech - an immoral double standard.
I also expect the transgender insanity to go away, where church homeless shelters and public schools are told that if you want federal money, you must let mentally ill biologically intact men (often still attracted to women) in women's shelters, girls' locker rooms, dorms, bathrooms, etc regardless of the privacy and safety of women. And that Trump can change almost immediately by fiat by removing "sexual identity" as a class to Title 9, something it was never covered demonstrated by Barney Frank trying several times to amend it to cover that group.
Gay marriage shouldn't be controversial in the first place and should be legal where ever you live. It's all about love you know.
I really don't believe Trump is upset by gay marriage, and I don't think he will use it as a political football. Might surprise me, though.
I highly doubt "Marriage Equality" laws will be overturned.
Firstly our nation is based upon separation of church and state.
Most people who are against gay marriage cite religious reasons.
Secondly if it isn't illegal for two women or two men to be in love with one another, cohabitate, or adopt children it's hard to justify denying them the right to marry their mate.
Simply put it's discrimination.
Last but not least the vast majority of people surveyed are not against gay marriage. Younger generations are more progressive than older ones. There's been a global shift that's gradually gaining worldwide acceptance.
Much like the laws forbidding interracial marriage were struck down in 1967 in "Loving VS Virginia" I imagine 50 years from now many people will wonder why the government ever attempted to come between two consenting adults with regard to marriage.
Trump was also the first Republican to give a party acceptance speech specifically mentioning the LBGT community.
