Friends Are Hard to Find

Updated on January 15, 2014

FRIENDS / FRIENDSHIP

The free dictionary defines friendship:

1. The quality or condition of being friends.

2. A friendly relationship: formed many new friendships over the summer.

3. Friendliness; good will: a policy of friendship toward other nations.

There are many other thoughts about the meaning of friendship:

1.Acquaintances … they’re like weeds; they grow up around the real friends and choke them off —Christopher Isherwood

2.A cheerful friend is like a sunny day which spreads its brightness on all around —Sir John Lubbock

3.Choose your friends like your books, few but choice books —James Howell

4.The false friend is like the shadow of a sundial —French proverb

5.The feeling of friendship is like that of being comfortably filled with roastbeef; love like being enlivened with champagne —Samuel Johnson

6.A friendless man is like a left hand without a right —Hebrew proverb

7.Friends are like melons. Shall I tell you why? To find one good, you must a hundred try —Claude Mermet

8.Friendship is a single soul dwelling in two bodies —Aristotle

9.Friendship, like the immortality of the soul, is too good to be believed —Ralph Waldo Emerson

Friendship is priceless. It is the adoption, acceptance, and love of another human being wherein the status of brother or sister is given without bloodline. A friend is someone who supports and understands your heart without explanation. A friend is someone who wants the best for you yet is honest enough to be truthful with you regarding your life. A friend seeks to give and not to take.

Friendship is not an opportunist situation or an interaction based on what can be extracted from another party. Friendship is not about using other people for your own advantage. True friendship is not based on someone's status, ability to fund your financial interest, or status gained from entering someone's social network or social circle. It is about a mutual love and care from another human being absent of agenda. Your friends from your past are most likely to stick with you in the future.

Today the meaning of friendship seems to be lost in agenda's and motives. Gone are the days when you hopped into your friends car and offered to give gas money when they drove. Gone are the days when your friend introduced you to her/his date and you know that man/woman is off limits to you. Gone are the days when friends did their best to present you in the best light even if that minimized their notoriety simply because they love you and want the best for you.

Now we have frenemies ,unhealthy friendships, toxic relationships/friendships, and co-dependent interaction. What happened to good old friends who really love other people?

For those of us who have been blessed to have true friends who are our best cheerleaders, closest confidants, and elected family that loves us despite our short comings...........cheers to you! Cheers to your friends! It's a different world.

thank you, this is a beautiful reminder to the whole universe. We need to be good friends to create and enjoy good friendships... I totally agree with the fact that today's society is based on non value and especially superficial and fake interactions. True and good friends are rare, so, be one and keep a few, feed them, grow them and revisit them to keep them alive. May you all be blessed with a few good friends... and be good friends, that makes a lifetime a lot happier.
