Hollywood Themes | Movie Theme
It's a Wrap!
Hollywood Themes are popular and fun for many types of events such as weddings, proms, birthday parties, rehearsal dinners and more. The key to a successful event is to have a detailed plan before you start purchasing décor, willy nilly.
There are many different avenues you can take when hosting an event with Hollywood themes. You could use an:
* Oscars Parties - Academy Awards theme
* A particular film/ movie party or celebrate a certain celebrity's career
* Best Pictures Winners theme
* Vintage, Old or Classic Hollywood theme
* General "At the Movies" type theme
I have personally coordinated or help coordinate most of the types of Hollywood parties mentioned above. They are a whole lot of fun to put together and each is unique to your view and the specific topic you choose. I have come up with my best tips and suggestions here for you. They will help you come up with a decor plan for your own movie themed event.
Start with an Elegant Invitation
Movie Themed, Of Course
Invitations are the beginning of a themed event. They set the tone for your wedding or event, let your guests know where you will be taking them. Choosing elegant invitations for your Hollywood theme from a traditional printer can be expensive, but the internet has given us a world of options. At Zazzle, you can design your own invitation from scratch or choose a template from one of the talented shop owners and customize it to your liking.
There are no minimums for your order, no set-up fees and you can re-order any quantity at any time -- no penalties. Check out some of the movie theme invitations below. Click on an image for more information.
Roll Out the Red Carpet and Bring on the Paparazzi
What's a movie theme or Hollywood theme without a red carpet and paparazzi?
The entrance to your event sets the stage for the rest of the décor. Glam it up!
Whether your party is held at home or in a banquet facility, these two props will go a long way to transporting the guests to your Hollywood movie theme.
Consider choosing a specific movie to theme your event after. It narrows the choices and may make your decorating easier.
Table Décor I
Themed Centerpieces are a Must
For any themed event, you continue your theme through the décor. Centerpieces, favors, table name/number holders and more are all a part of the décor. A movie theme has a plethora of options when choosing table décor. Clapboards, film canisters, film, Oscar-like statues, memorabilia from the movie, photos of celebrities, popcorn boxes, replica movie camera and more.
If you are going for a vintage feel, consider using top hats, long gloves, pearls, tuxedos, black and white photos, old movie posters and the like for your inspiration. Below are some ideas to get you started!
*Remember - Centerpieces don't have to be already put together. Choose items that will reflect your theme and group theme together to create your own, unique centerpiece.
Use themed items for utilitarian purposes too! Like the top hat ice bucket below. Set it on your table with a bottle of wine in it and add gloves, a 5" x 7" acrylic frame with a movie poster image and you have a centerpiece!
Top Hat Ice Bucket - Hollywood Movie Theme
I have used these top hats on more than one occasion. They are very versatile. Use them on tables to hold wine, champagne or even beer -- use them on a buffet table for chips, party mix, popcorn or dinner rolls -- use them in a vignette for a centerpiece celebrating vintage Hollywood movies -- the possibilities are endless!
Perfect accessory to dress up your Hollywood Themes table! It can hold champagne, wine, or maybe have your table number sticking out of the top or fill it with favors. The possibilities are endless.
Table Decor II
Table Names, Favors, and more...
Name your tables instead of numbering them. They could be named after:
- Celebrities in general or vintage movie stars or stars from your chosen movie
- Places/Cities in your chosen movie
- Named after another element from the movie such as song titles from the soundtrack or Character names
Display them on Clapboards using plate holders to stand them up and filling out the pertinent info with chalk. If you name the tables after movies, use a picture frame to hold a copy of the movie poster, if tables are named for places/scenes/cities, use still pictures from the movie or pictures of the cities. Use themed clip holders to display the names (or even numbers if you choose that route). You get the idea.
Favors give your guests a reminder of a lovely evening to take home with them. A photo with a frame, magnet or some other small gift is also an appropriate way to say "Thank You" for coming.
Clapboard Place Card Holders - for your Hollywood theme
Use them as place card holders, photo holders of table name/number holders. They are very versatile!
Film, Canisters and Accessories Are a MUST - You can use the film down the center of your tables too!
Film reels and canisters are great décor items for a Hollywood theme. Use them as part of your guest table centerpieces, on buffets or dessert tables and even in vignettes around the room!
Confetti for the Hollywood Tables - Clapboard and Filmstrip Confetti
Sprinkle it around your centerpieces, on your buffet or dessert table to add some glitz and glamour.
This confetti is perfect for a Hollywood theme. The film and clapboards are icons for Hollywood. It doesn't take much but adds a lot of style!
Setting the Stage...
or the Room, if you will
When rehearsing, actors like to stay "in character". At a movie theme party, the room décor should keep your guests believing they are at a real premiere party, the Academy Awards or at a wrap party for a certain movie. You "set the stage" for your event by using room décor and vignettes to keep them "in character".
Make your own Oscar type cut-outs, a custom lighted Hollywood Marquee for your entrance, a stage or behind the scenes director's area with megaphone, chair, camera and light props to continue the theme:
A cocktail and hors 'deourves event is perfect for Hollywood Themes. Mixing and mingling and networking is a big part of Hollywood life. Consider creating a buffet of heavy appetizers for your menu. This allows everyone to eat what they like as well as "see and be seen" as they enjoy your event.
Decorate your buffet table (buffetscape) with movie props like clapboards, Oscars, confetti and paparazzi cameras. Your guests will love it!

I use SmartDraw Visual Processor to make my detailed floor plans.
Hosting a successful wedding or event is a gargantuan task. Planning is key. If the details are attended to, your guests will likely remember the event for years to come. It's the small details that bring your theme to life and transport your guests to the time or place you desire.
Drawing a detailed floor plan and deciding exactly what you want where will help you pull off the theme. Don't just start buying decorations without a plan. It will end up looking hodge podge and unorganized.
Plan, plan and plan some more. Plan before you ever start looking to buy. Having all the necessary information (room dimensions, architectural elements, table placement and more) will make the planning so much easier!
