How To: A Romantic Picnic Guide

Updated on May 13, 2014

Summer - A Time of Love, A Time of Picnics

Summer is coming and that is just great. Summer is perfectly suitable time to give your romantic dinner a little twist-and make it a picnic. There is almost nothing more romantic than dining outside in the sunset, whispering into each others ear and enjoying fresh air and sounds of mother nature.

A picnic is also a great idea for one of first dates, it is perfect when you want to show off your skill in food preparation, but you don't want to invite your partner home.

However, there are some things, which can ruin special romantic moments like nothing else. In this guide I will try to provide you with useful information to reduce the chance your romantic picnic will go all wrong.

Step One: The Place

Suitable place is really important for a picnic, especially when it is intended to be romantic. First rule, be very careful about trespassing. There is a lot of suitable public places, use them. Do not use private property to have a picnic there unless you have owners approval. It would be very unpleasant if your wonderful romantic date was shut down in the middle by police or worse.

If your picnic is supposed to be really romantic you need some special place. You need THE PLACE. Don't panic, I will help your imagination and suggest some ideas.

Picnic by the sea

The most common but still very romantic place you can use is somewhere out there. Just grab a basket and blanket and go to the nature. You can find nice picnic spots at beaches, in the forest, at the coast of seas and lakes, in parks, etc. There are often some tables and benches installed on these places which is advantage.

But be careful about places which are known and highly used, there is a good chance that you romantic picnic will not be so much romantic with all the people around, screaming kids, yelling moms and teenagers listening to their loud music.

It is better to find some spot little bit unknown for a romantic picnic. Romantic picnic can be also a good alternative to restaurant dinner when you want to propose, but than you need really some crazy special place and you must put a lot more effort into preparation of that event.

Some Really Romantic Place Suggestions

  1. Roof

Choose some suitable roof with exceptional romantic view, arrange it with the building owner. With some effort this can be perfect!

  2. Zoo

Zoo is perfect for a picnic, but if you are able to arrange private evening picnic in a closed zoo, it might be just unforgettable.

  3. A Yacht

Yacht on the sea during the sunset can be a very romantic place to have a picnic.

  4. Castles and Historical Monuments

Very romantic, just be careful and find out if there are picnics allowed in your desired location.

Step Two: Equipment

If you are supposed to enjoy your romantic picnic, you need some equipment. In following paragraphs I will point out the most important and I will also provide you with some useful tips.

Picnic Baskets

They are just saying -

"Turn of your cell, sit down, enjoy, relax."

Picnic basket

Basket

One of the most important things about picnic is a picnic basket. You need it to bring the food and other stuff to your perfectly chosen spot. Of course, you could use some other kind of luggage, but there is something truly romantic about those picnic baskets. They are like something from other age, in today's rush time they are just saying -"Turn of your cell, sit down, enjoy, relax."

Picnic Blanket

This is very important, whether you are planning to have picnic on the roof or in the forest, whether you are convinced there is bench and table on your chosen spot, it is really good to have blanket or two. There is nothing worse than pack everything into a basket, and than ruin your experience because of missing blanket.

Of course, if you are planning to take your picnic to whole new level, you can prepare the spot in prior your date with blankets, pillows, rose petals and what ever you can imagine.

Step Three: The Food

Food is very important especially for romantic picnic, because you are going out not only to enjoy each other's company, but also to experience something special, something uncommon. Basically you have two possibilities - buy some food and take it with you, or make some on your own. It is usually not a bad idea to show to your partner you are capable of some special effort. And in my experience a man who can actually cook is often considered romantic and attractive.

There is a lot of recipe books full of wonderful recipes suitable for a picnic, you just need to choose.

Final Idea

There is nothing like a perfect guide to a perfect romantic date at all. But I consider picnic a great idea for a date and I hope this guide will help you. It doesn't matter where is your picnic taking place or what do you eat, what matters is, who is the other person with you. Because best experiences are made by people.

What do you consider best food for picnic?

I've had many romantic picnics - pack the basket with a little wine and cheese and fruit. Sometimes enjoy the sunset. Great memories!

I like your place suggestions! We didn't have a yacht, but we had a small sailboat and enjoyed many picnics with lapping waves in the background. I like the idea of a quiet rooftop in an otherwise-busy big city. Great ideas!

It would be fun to hear about a romantic picnic adventure that you have been on yourself. Eating out in a place other than a restaurant or home makes the meal so memorable. My Dad took us on picnics all the time when we were little. I haven't forgotten those days.

@rking96: Oh yes, we once had a picnic in the middle of medieval castle ruins and it was really great. But I have little advantage there, because in Czech republic there is insane density of historical monuments and castles etc. Almost every small town has some nice ruins, castle, palace or something like that, because our country has been very prosperous in the 14th century.
