How to Plan the Perfect Romantic Evening at Home
Going out or staying in?
A romantic dinner date is not about choosing the most expensive restaurant or about showing how much money you spent to put the evening together. A romantic evening with your significant other should be about showing the other person how much you care about them. Planning a romantic evening at home away from the distractions of a restaurant allows all of the focus to be on you as a couple. The most important thing to keep in mind is to have fun and to make sure that your partner does too.

Time for some Quality Time
When was the last time you had a romantic evening with your spouse / partner / significant other?
Setting the stage
If you have children in your home arrange for them to have a sleepover at a friend, relative or simply enjoy your evening once they are tucked away into bed.
The house should be clean, free from clutter and smelling nice. Set the mood with soft lighting and different sized candles. Groups of tea lights offer more light than you would expect. Avoid scented candles. You can also lead the way from the entrance door to the living / kitchen area. Make sure you take all the necessary precautions when lighting candles! Try to include some incense or aromatherapy oils, choosing scents that allow for relaxation and calm.
Select some soft music to play in the background. The volume should be set so that you can still speak in your normal tone. Yelling at each other to communicate will definitely spoil the mood. Try to choose songs or artists that have a special meaning for the two of you. If you have been dating for a long time, choose songs from when you first started going out. On the other hand, if you just started going out, you cannot go wrong with classical music. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin are also excellent choices for a romantic setting.
Pay a lot of attention to the dinner table since this is where you will be spending most of the evening. Set the table with even more candles (unscented) and your best dinnerware. A tablecloth will make the setting even prettier. Sprinkle the table with rose petals or sparkly confetti.
Flowers are a must. A nice bouquet of flowers will not only show you have made an extra effort for this evening but it is also necessary for the perfect romantic setting.
Turn off your phone! This evening is about you two and no one else. The aim of this evening is to make your partner feel important and special to you. Texting away or chatting on the phone will surely not give this message. Also turn off the television, computer and any other distractions.

The meal is the most important part of your romantic evening so plan well. Plan the menu even if you are catering. Keep the dishes small and light, leaving enough room for dessert. Stuffing yourselves like there is no tomorrow will only get you dozing off after the dinner. Also keep in mind what kind of food your partner likes or dislikes, and don’t forget if he or she suffers from any allergies.
Many restaurants offer take out services. Do not serve the restaurant food in the plastic containers they are delivered in. Transfer the food in attractive platters and bowls before serving. Only cook yourself if you are confident you have time to shop for food and have tried the dish before. This is not the time to experiment!
Choose menu items that do not need a lot of attention or can be prepared in advance so that you can focus on your partner rather than rushing around in a frenzy to prepare the perfect evening. You can even leave some simple tasks for your partner so he or she can casually get involved while you are carrying out your final preparations. This can also help as a conversation booster and takes the edge of the evening.
Do not choose a dish which is messy like spaghetti with red sauce, or difficult to eat like lobster. It goes without saying that garlic and onion should be only used in small doses or avoided completely!
Give a lot of importance to dessert. After hunger has been satisfied and you are ready to indulge your sweet tooth, nothing says romantic like feeding dessert to each other. Think strawberries and hot fudge or any other kind of fruit with whipped cream.
Serve your meal with wine or champagne. Choose a nice bottle of wine that your partner will like and which will compliment your food. A nice glass of wine will ease the nerves and set you at ease. Getting drunk and blabbing away anything that comes to mind, true or not, is not romantic. Wine should be properly chilled so take care of this ahead of time.
Think about what you will be doing after dinner. If you live by the beach, a local park or simply a quiet area, a nice walk in the moonlight is ideal after a meal to get you moving but still maintain the romantic atmosphere. You can also watch a romantic movie together or play a fun board game. Look for movies and games that you both enjoy. Prepare some hot chocolate, iced tea or a cocktail. If it’s cold, don’t forget a nice warm blanket to cuddle up under.
This evening is all about relaxing so why not prepare some body oil and give each other a massage? You can also take advantage of the music you have prepared, put the volume slightly up and dance the night away in each other’s arms.
In the Mood for Love
Has this lens set you in the mood for love? Will you be planning a romantic evening anytime soon?
Remember the aim of this evening is fun!
Keep it simple and keep it a surprise! Over complicating things will only make you feel anxious and stressed.
Give your partner clues throughout the day leading up to the evening to increase anticipation that you are up to something special. Make sure that you plan your evening when your partner does not have other commitments. If you or your partner hates surprises, then why not prepare an invitation and give it to your partner in advance?
No matter what you do, your partner will appreciate your effort in trying to make this evening special so after all is set, relax and have fun!
