If I Knew Then What I Know Now

Updated on January 5, 2015

12 Things to Make Life More Enjoyable.

If I knew then what I know now: When I was young and full of myself I could have used a little guidance on how to make life more enjoyable and live for myself. Below are 12 things you can do to make life fun.

1: I would listen carefully to what my heart says.

Proverbs 23:19 (New International Version)

Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path.

People make decisions that are not right for them based on what they hear from others. Sometimes they worry about what others may think. Always follow your heart and you will be happy.

2: I would know that school would end soon enough...and work would...well, never mind.

Exodus 5:18 (New International Version)

Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks."

You will have to work soon enough and it won't always be fun. Try not to grow up too fast. Learn as much as you can and stay in school as long as you can.

3: I would know how much my parents love me and I would believe that they are doing the best they can.

Proverbs 17:6 (New International Version)

Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.

Your parents love you and wish you only the best. Sometimes they have a hard time showiing love. Sometimes they can't be your friend. They are caught up in their own life and sometimes leave you out, not because they want too, but because life is difficult for them as well.

4: I wouldn't be afraid of acting like a kid. Enjoy doing those embarrassing things that take you out of your comfort zone.

Job 33:25 (New International Version)

then his flesh is renewed like a child's; it is restored as in the days of his youth.

Kid's give up playing way too soon. If you have ever heard the saying "act like an adult", it comes from someone that thinks you are doing something inappropriate but sometimes it's okay to forget about what others think and have fun in spite of them. Just make sure it is good clean fun.

5: I would be braver. I still have a lot of things that I could do better. Taking the first step is always the hardest

2 Samuel 10:12 (New International Version)

Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight."

This is a lesson I learn over and over again. Telling others what you really think is the hardest thing to do. Do it and you will find a freedom that most people, will never achieve. Do it with kindness but do it and your world will be yours and no one else’s to command.

6: I would look for the good qualities in everyone and enjoy them for those. - Jeremiah 1:7 (New International Version)

But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you.

If you look for the good qualities in others, you will never be alone. You will feel the need to say something bad about someone. Don't because they may choose to do the same to you. Instead find something good to praise them for. Everyone you meet has value to you and they will be able to do something better than you can.

7: Plan your life for the best outcome.

Genesis 11:6

The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

Plan and follow the plan, change it when needed but keep your eye on what you want the end to be. Every good outcome has a plan to get there.

8: Dance every chance you get. Dance especially with those you love and those who love you. - Ecclesiastes 3:4 (New International Version)

a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance,

Learn to dance, there is no greater joy in life than sharing the dance floor with others. It is a great way to express yourself and let yourself go. Don't worry how good you are, understand how good it makes you feel inside. Just dance.

9. I would enjoy my body just the way it is. - 1 Corinthians 6:20 (New International Version)

You were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

You are a child of God and you are beautiful in his eyes. Forget about what you read in magazines or what others say. You are a beautiful creation like no other.

10. I would have worked harder to maintain the relationships I have and worry less about the ones I don't. - Job 2:11-13 (Contemporary English Version)

Job's Three Friends

11Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah [a] were three of Job's friends, and they heard about his troubles. So they agreed to visit Job and comfort him. 12When they came near enough to see Job, they could hardly recognize him. And in their great sorrow, they tore their clothes, then sprinkled dust on their heads and cried bitterly. 13For seven days and nights, they sat silently on the ground beside him, because they realized what terrible pain he was in.

Make friends and keep them. Be there when they need you and they will be there for you but be there when they don't need you too.

11. If there is something I want or someone I want to have a relationship with I will make every effort to make it happen.

Acts 2:44 All the believers were together and had everything in common.

People are meant to be together. Find people you have things in common with. Share your joys and your grief. Learn that anyone can be a friend if you want them to be. You need only find common ground and build on that.

12. I would forgive and forget. It has a healing effect like no other can. - Exodus 10:17

"Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the LORD your God to take this deadly plague away from me."

One of the most freeing things you can learn is to forgive others. It will give them no control over you. You will have peace of mind that you have done all you can. Learn to forgive and you will live a much happier life.

I learned that you must not use other people's words to tell how much you are worth: those that know not about gems will say any price that comes to mind when they see one and say that the million-dollar diamond is a cheap fake and that the cheap fake is a million dollar-diamond. That is gems, that can be evaluated on looks: how would those people say how much are YOU worth?
