Looking back at Royal Wedding dresses and forward to Kate Middleton's wedding dress.

Let's look at Royal Wedding dresses for the last 90 years .

The last really huge British Royal Wedding was that of Prince William's parents, Princess Diana and Charles, Prince of Wales. This Royal Wedding took place on 29 July 1981, at St Paul's Cathedral, London. Princess Diana's wedding dress was designed by Elizabeth and David Emanuel.Diana's royal wedding dress was a huge, wide silk wedding dress with an enormous train that filled the aisle of St. Paul's Cathedral. Diana was just 19 when she got married, and Diana's wedding dress was a young girl's fantasy, typically 1980s in style.

On this webpage I've collected together Royal Wedding dresses from all the Royal brides of recent years.

There are pictures of the weddings of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen mother's wedding dress.

The future Queen Elizabeth ( who was Princess Elizabeth when she married) is next of our Royal Brides.

The Queen's sister, the glamorous Princess Margaret was a Royal bride in 1960.

In 1973 the Queen's daughter, Princess Anne, was married. Princess Anne is the second of the Queen's four children.

In 1981 the Queen's eldest son, Prince Charles, married Lady Diana Spencer. Lady Di was a gorgeous Royal bride. Prince William is their eldest son.

In 1986 the third child of the Queen and Prince Philip, Prince Andrew, married Sarah Ferguson, who looked radiant on her Royal wedding day.

In 1999 the Queen's youngest son, Prince Edward, married Sophie Rhys-Jones - another beautiful Royal bride.

In the USA, in 2010, the nearest thing to a British Royal Wedding was the marriage of Chelsea Clinton.

Chelsea Clinton wore a wonderful Vera Chang wedding dress on July 31, 2010.

Kate Middleton's wedding dress was a very well kept secret. It was not until Kate Middleton emerged from the Goring hotel with her father, at 10.51 on the 29 April 2011, that we saw the Royal Wedding dress. It was then confirmed that Sarah Burton, of British fashion house Alexander McQueen, was the designer of the latest Royal Wedding dress.

Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon became the future Queen Elizabeth, wife of King George VI, and mother to the current monarch, Elizabeth II. She lived a long life, out living her husband by 50 years. There was no live broadcast of this wedding, but you can see from the very formal photograph how pretty the much loved Queen Mother looked at her Royal Wedding. The Royal Wedding dress is typical of 1920s fashion styles.

The future Queen Elizabeth II was married in Westminster Abbey, just two years after the end of the Second World War. The Royal Wedding was a time of great rejoicing, as Britain had something happy to celebrate at a time of great austerity.

The Queens younger sister looked fabulous. Princess Margaret married in

This was the first ever televised Royal Wedding. I remember watching this Royal Wedding on television, and longing for a wedding dress like Princess Margaret's. Princess Margaret was sister to the Queen, Elizabeth II. The wedding took place in 1960, and was watched by a huge worldwide audience on TV, the first time such an event was widely televised.

Diana's wedding dress - very flouncy and frilly.

In later life Princess Diana became elegant and sophisticated, but her wedding dress is that of a younger girl. Diana was just 20 when she married.

The Royal Wedding of Charles and Diana took place at St. Paul's Cathedral on 29 July 1981.

To remind yourself of that day, visit On This Day from the BBC archives.

Lots of brides to be who want to look like a Princess on their wedding day may think that frill amd flounces are good. I think that a slim and elegant line is much more regal. Diana a few years later would not have worn a frilly dress like this.

Now the Countess of Wessex, Sophie married in June 1999.

Sophie and Edward married at St. Georges Chapel, Windsor, in a relatively low key Royal Wedding. Sophie could be a role model for Kate Middleton, as she came from outside the British Aristocracy, and was a working girl before marrying Prince Edward, youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Sophie's Royal Wedding dress was by Samantha Shaw. This Royal Wedding dress was a beautiful long , fitted coat dress with long sleeves, with 325,000 glass and pearl beads.

Watched the royal wedding on TV in America - the whole thing, and then again excerpts were shown throughout the day 3 more times and I caught all of those when they aired as well. I watched it almost all day.

The dress was more simply that Diana's of 1981 but still beautiful in it's own right. Sometimes simpler can be MORE elegant.

While I have to honestly say it's not one of my big concerns, I expect that it will nothing short of spectacular, along with the entire Royal wedding. I'm always impressed with the pageantry!
