Wedding favors - a centuries-old tradition

Creating your own personalized wedding favors is a fun way to incorporate the theme or season of your wedding into a token of appreciation for each wedding guest. Since favors can be included at each place-setting or on wedding favor table, they also can add to the reception's festive atmosphere.

While some couples opt for more elaborate and expensive favors, many choose to put their personal touch on the traditional wedding favor of a gift-wrapped confection.

Early wedding favors, known as bonbonnieres, were porcelain or crystal boxes containing sugar cubes. Sugar was a luxury at that time and over the years the tradition evolved into almonds, followed by sugar-covered almonds.

Today, wedding couples often give each of their guests five jordan almonds as a way of passing their best wishes and luck onto their guests. The five almonds represent:

  • fertility
  • health
  • wealth
  • happiness
  • longevity

Beach-theme favor & table ideas

Favor ideas for themed weddings

While many brides may consult the pages of bridal planning books, magazines or even a wedding consultant, some really fun and creative wedding favor ideas can be found on websites for candy. This probably is not the first place one would look for inspiration, but not only do many candy companies provide ideas, they also provide directions on how to achieve a certain "look."

Believe it or not, the Jelly Belly® Candy Company has a section of their website dedicated to wedding favor ideas for various wedding themes. If you know anything about Jelly Belly® jelly beans, you know that they come in any color imaginable, making it easy to match the look and feel of any wedding theme or season.

Be sure to take a look at the wonderfully-inspirational themed wedding favor idea photos above. These are just a small sample of the wedding favor ideas from Jelly Belly®. In fact, their website includes multiple photos for each idea, showing how the wedding favor can be included as part of a place setting or a wedding favor table.

My absolute favorite idea is the beach-themed wedding favor. The jelly beans displayed in mass in large shell-shaped and glass containers provide a punch of ocean-inspired color. Notice how the individual wedding favors in sandy-colored burlap bags are cleverly hung on a piece of driftwood on the table.

Personalize candies like M&M's ®

Include a personal message on a wedding favor

While more expensive wedding favors may include an engraved personal message, wedding favor tags and confections themselves can also be personalized.

Consider printing the wedding date and a photo on M&M's® for a really fun and personalized wedding favor to give to guests.

Personalizing M&M's® is easy to do online. The wedding couple can select from twenty-five colors of the chocolate-covered candy, add their own personal text, and upload a photo. Wedding favors can be pre-made or the couple may choose to purchase them in bulk to gift wrap on their own.

For couples trying to reduce costs, consider personalizing only certain color M&M's® and buying the rest from store-bought packages. For example, Easter and Valentine's Day packages of M&M's® may contain colors that already match the wedding theme.

Personalize candy wrappers

Personalized messages and photos on labels make fun wedding favors

Hershey's® candy bar wrapper:

Personalized Hershey's® candy bar wrappers certainly make surprising wedding favors for each of your guests. While this option is more expensive than other wedding favor ideas, since thirty-six 1.5 oz bars will cost about $75, if it's in the budget, your guests will certainly remember it for years to come.

To save money on this idea, consider printing your own labels for any type of candy bar and wrapping it yourself.

Jones Soda Co.® label:

If you are not already familiar with Jones Soda Co.®, they continually change the photos on the labels of their bottles. In fact, you can even make your own custom Jones Soda Co.® labels.

Easily completed on their website, you can upload a photo, text for photo credit, and text for the back of the label. Imagine a couple including the story of how they met or future dreams on each label for guests to read. The soda itself is available in a lot of terrific flavors and colors that can be matched to a variety of wedding themes.

Each customized 12-pack of soda is around $29.99.

Wedding favor kits for budget-friendly weddings

After looking at the candy ideas from Jelly Belly® and M&M's® you may be inspired to package or gift-wrap either of these candies or others on your own.

Arts and crafts stores often have wedding sections that contain a lot of the supplies you will need. Wedding favor kits include tins or boxes, labels to write on or print, and maybe even ribbon. Additionally, glass containers are also sold in kits specifically designed for wedding favors.

But don't limit yourself just to the wedding section. Be inspired by the photos above. For example, the rustic or garden theme wedding favor ideas from Jelly Belly® can be varied by using items from the floral or garden department. The tin watering can (first photo) makes an excellent and inexpensive way to package wedding favors for either theme.

Add color to your wedding favors

Colorful candies and confections, or even the traditional five jordan almonds, can be wrapped in cellophane bags and sealed with beautifully printed paper.

Take a walk down the scrapbook paper aisle of a local arts and crafts store for inspiration. Pre-printed paper can be purchased in individual sheets or books which contain multiple patterns centered around a color scheme and theme.

Consider layering coordinating papers and using fancy scissors that cut in a scallop pattern to make the wedding favor even more attractive.

Budget-saving favor ideas

Wedding favors don't have to be budget-breakers; save money by thinking outside the box. For example, large quantities of gift boxes and containers can often be bought from shipping supply companies such as Uline. If you see a product in their catalog or website they may even ship you a sample item.

Here are some examples from of packages and the cost (as of 4/2012):

  • 95 cents per jar/12 to case (1/2 pint, 2 1/2 inch diameter)
  • $7-$10 for carton of 1,000 poly bags (depending on size of bag)
  • $69 for 144 clear gable boxes
  • $66 for 144 take-out boxes

We were not allowed to throw rice at our wedding either, or anything for that matter. Instead each guest had a balloon and they were released all at once. It really was a beautiful sight. I love the rock candy on a stick idea. There are so many unique candies that can be personalized as wedding favors. Plus, with a little effort the presentation of the wedding favor can make it even more fun without breaking any budgets.

Your Hub brought back memories for me. I remember making 200+ little packets of birdseed for a friend because rice is not allowed to throw in these parts. I was nutty by the time I made the first 50! I made about 100 hand-painted kitchen magnets for my first wedding. My second marriage was a lot more frugal. We shopped at a candy store and bought different colors of rock candy on a stick. My husband printed tiny photos of our wedding portrait (taken by my mom with a point-and-shoot camera), and I wrote our information on the back of those. If I wanted tiny boxes of truffles for each guest, it would have cost close to $200 for less than 20 people. No, thanks. Cancelled that order and did it our way. Better on the cheap, but memorable at the same time. We enjoyed our project.

Great ideas, ktrapp. Jelly Bellies, huh? And M & M's! I didn't know they could be personalized. There are a lot of inexpensive gifts people can put together with a little creativity. Your hub gives really neat ideas. Many votes!
