Planning the Perfect Wedding

Updated on October 24, 2014

So you are planning a wedding!

Your big day is coming up soon and even though you are excited, you are dreading the difficult task of planning everything. This can be fun but at the same time one of the most stressful times. I have been involved in many weddings and know that the amount of planning needed is huge. So I decided to create a lens that can advise you on all your planning needs and make it all a lot easier. I hope this all helps and I hope that your day is everything you wished for.

The Wedding Dress

Unless it's the perfect dress, most brides will not enjoy their day so some important attention must be placed in this.

A white wedding dress used to be worn if the bride was a virgin but now days it is being worn if it's her first wedding. But It's up to the bride if she wants to wear white or try something different.

There many different styles of dresses like princess, empire, column, ball gown and mermaid. You can visit to read more about each style.

Another important factor is the bridesmaid dress which can't be white but must be stylish and elegant. The stigma on bridesmaid dresses is that they are ugly but this doesn't have to be true if you find the right dresses.

Buying a Wedding Dress Online - Wedding Dresses to Fit Your Budget

The real bargain wedding dresses can be found on Ebay. Think about it. A wedding dress is only worn once (unless it's a family heirloom) and after a good cleaning, it's probably "like new". Obviously you have to shop well in advance and there is always the chance that you won't like how the dress looks on as well as you liked the picture. BUT.... many are willing to take the chance to save BIG.

Compiling a Guest List

The best way to compile a guest list for your wedding is to following the following steps

- Start by deciding on the number you can invite and split it between you and your partner

- Then first invite immediate family like your mother, father and siblings

- Then invite close family such as grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins

- Then invite friends and neighbors that you would like there

- Lastly invite any role models you would like there

- Then reread your list and take out anyone you both don't want there

Wedding Invitations

Once you have compiled your guest list, it is now time to send invitations to them. You need to design invitations that match the theme of your wedding so guests know what to expect. Your designing can be done at home by yourself or by a company(This is expensive however)

Your invitations should include the following details:

- Venue

- Time

- Date

- Dress Code

- RSVP time and phone number

- Whether a cash bar or open bar

The Venue

Where to Hold Your Wedding and Reception

The first thing that most engaged couples decide is the venue for their wedding. This is more important than you think because it determines how your photos look, how easy it is to get around and whether you enjoy your day or not. If you are deciding to have your wedding at your home then this section won't really matter to you

When deciding which venue to use, there are many factors you need to decide. You need to consider whether you want to get married in the city, the outlying areas or on the beach(This creates it's own problems with the need of a permit and safety). You need to find out if the venue has a chapel or if they do their ceremonies outside or in a conference room. You must see if they have accommodation so that you can stay the night to avoid driving drunk or any problems. You need to find out how much of the planning they do for you and whether they provide the food and music.

Also remember to go take a look at the venue at about the time you will be getting married so you can judge their lighting and how the setting looks. And also go visit more than one venue to compare and judge costs.

Wedding Photos

Incredibly important to get those wedding photos right

Getting a good photographer to take your photos is very important. The photos taken on your day are the memories that are left afterwards and will be what you show everyone after. You need to make sure you get a photographer who takes the style of photos you like.

You need to visit a few photographers and ask to see a portfolio of the photos they have taken at weddings before. You also need to ask what sort of photo books they create and what covers they use and what quality they print your pictures in. You lastly need to find which package is best for your needs and compare prices.

A Wedding Video?

Should You Videotape Your Wedding?

Getting a video of your wedding done is a luxury extra but one that I would strongly recommend. It allows you to watch your wedding again and if done on dvd can last many decades. You can even show your children the video one day. Its a great memory.

Videographers have different packages based on the hours needed, staff used and the type of footage captured. If you are having a small lunch wedding, I would advise you get the smallest package with one videographer used. For bigger weddings I would advise getting 2 videographers from the company and booking about 10 hours of footage time. For huge weddings and if you have some extra dough to spend, I would advise their biggest package with HD Video footage taken. This gives you the best quality.

If you don't have extra money to spend then maybe get a family member with a handheld video device to video the weddings. Some camera options are listed below

The Decor

When planning a wedding, this is one of the points that causes lots of arguments and heartache. It's best to decide on a theme based on both your lives like beach or colorful. Try decide on a theme that isn't too morbid or in your face. Some popular color themes used are black & white, cream & white, yellow, purple, nordic ice colors and girly colors.

For your service, the best thing to do is to have a few bunches of flowers that fit the color of your theme on the alter. Then have a flower like a rose and a ribbon on the end of each bench.

For your reception, you will need to come up with a center piece for each table. Try use water and flowers and candles for effect. You will also need to provide a gift for each guest and try and fit this with your theme

Looking for Unique Wedding Favors?

I didn't have wedding favors, so I can't speak from first-hand experience, but the folks at say they have a huge variety of wedding favors and can offer you something unique. Enter coupon code SAVE5 to receive 5% off of your order.

The Wedding Cake

Yum! Doesn't it look delicious?

Over the last few years many different wedding cake styles have been created and some might just suit your taste.

Single-tier Cakes - These are 1 level cakes that are simple and cost effective

Multi-tier Cakes - These are cakes with more than one level that are most extravagant and unique. You can have fun designing these

Cup Cake Cakes - These are cakes that actually are just a whole lot of cup cakes that are put on different levels. They are easy to make and are very unique

Chocolate ball Cakes - These are cakes made of balls of chocolate stacked into a pyramid shape

Most couples don't actually eat the cake so focus more on choosing flavoring and icing that the guests would like

What Food & Drink to Serve at Your Wedding

Choosing what food and drink to serve at your wedding is very important because it leaves a lasting impression.

For food, you need to decide whether you are doing a buffet or plated dishes. Guests seem to prefer buffet and it allows more time for socializing. But a plated dish is also a good idea but you must leave more than one option in case a guest doesn't eat something or is fussy

For drinks, you need to decide between a cash bar or open bar(free drinks in other words). Guests obviously prefer open bar. A lot of couples now days are making cool drinks free and spirits and wines cash. I like that idea as it allows the non alcoholic drinks to drink free.

Music at Your Wedding Reception

Choosing a good Dj is important. You should focus on getting one with a reputation and who can play many different styles of music. Another great option is to get a band to play at your wedding. This option will please the guests but make sure they can also play music from different genres.

Also remember to choose a song that means a lot to you and your partner as your first dance song. This is the song that will be remembered the most.

The Honeymoon

The fun and exciting honeymoon. This is what many couples look forward too even though it mustn't take attention away from the wedding.

Choosing a venue for your honeymoon is case of personal taste. Most popular are islands like Mauritius and Zanzibar and Cities such as Paris and New York.

When booking your honeymoon try to use a travel agent that is well known and reputable so that you won't be scammed and lose all your money. They will be able to plan many little details like activities to do while you there and meals.

The main thing to do is try your best to enjoy yourself no matter what happens because it's your relaxation time before married time starts properly

Small Wedding or Big? - What's Your Opinion

Is it better to have a smaller wedding and save the money for your future
