The Most Expensive Wedding Ever

Updated on October 10, 2014

...and That Doesn't Even Include the Honeymoon

Aaaah - look at them walking off, hand in hand, into the sunset. They're having the perfect wedding *sigh*

Many little girls dream about their wedding day and plan it in their heads - right down to the last piece of confetti. But dreams don't always come true - unless you're fabulously rich or your husband-to-be is.

A survey taken by revealed that in 2012, the average wedding in the USA cost $28,427. Although that sounds like a lot of cash, it seems we've all been pulling our belts in. This figure is the highest that folk have spent on weddings since 2008. But it still isn't as high as the average spend for that year, which was $29,334.

In 2012, the average spent on the blushing Bride's gown was $1,211 and the cake came in at $560. The Groom spent an average of $5,431 on the engagement ring.

If you live in New York, you might like to know that Manhattan was the most expensive place to get married in 2012. The average amount spent there was $76,687. The least expensive was Alaska, with an average spend of $15,504.

That still sounds expensive to me - but my first wedding in the UK came in at under £2,000 ($3,041.20 at today's exchange rate) but that was in 1985, so it's ancient history. So is the marriage...but moving swiftly on...

I've scoured the web to find the most expensive wedding dress, wedding cake and engagement rings...ever. So get a cup of coffee, make yourself comfortable and come with me on a ride into the world of the rich people. Be prepared to drool. A lot.

And I haven't even started looking at reception venues or honeymoon destinations yet...

All The Celebs Love Vera Wang But She's Not The Maker Of The Most Expensive Wedding Dress Ever. Surprised? Read On...

Vera Wang On Weddings
Vera Wang On Weddings

Wedding gown guru to all celebrities and former fashion editor at Vogue - Vera Wang is now more accessible to mere earthlings with her affordable diffusion line sold via Kohl's. The book isn't just about her gowns (although obviously they are featured). It's a great source of inspiration for anyone planning a wedding.

How do you get the most expensive wedding gown - ever?

You contact Renee Strauss.

Renee has spent 30 years as the top bridal specialist in Beverly Hills. Her client list makes your eyes water. Renee knows her stuff.

Then you call Martin Katz Jewelers (clients include Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, J. Lo and more too numerous to mention).

Set these two retail giants the task of creating a wedding gown for a Bridal Show. But not just any old wedding fair - this is the Bridal Show at the Ritz-Carlton. It's on Rodeo Drive. Nuff said.

This is exactly what happened in 2006 and the resulting gown is still the most expensive ever created. It is embellished with 150 carats worth of diamonds and has been valued at $12 million.

Call me picky - but I would be scared to death to wear it. It's all too easy to imagine kneeling down at the altar...and then trying to stand back up (gracefully, of course)...and then feeling that horrible tugging as the spiked heel of your Christian Louboutin (or Jimmy Choo or Manolo Blahnik) slits right through the back of the gown... Eeeek - just the though of it would have me waking up in a cold sweat...

If you're worn out from planning your wedding, take a break and indulge in this novel. Charlotte owns a wedding salon and is also planning her own wedding. Then she finds a vintage wedding gown in an old trunk. But who wore it and what became of them... Amazon reviewers absolutely love it.

The most expensive wedding cake ever made

This hugely expensive confection...

...was created for The National Gay Wedding Show at the Echo Arena in Liverpool in the UK. It was displayed there on March 3rd 2013.

Tim and Jules Smith own a bakery called Cake in Chester, UK. They got together with Russell and Case (very high end jewellers) and made this eight tiered wedding cake.

Tim gave credit to his wife, Jules for the design and commented "The cake has gone global overnight. We have had interested from all over Europe and America and lots of people have got in touch on Twitter to say how much they love it."

It's 1.5 metres tall (that's just shy of five feet). Now for the expensive part - it has been decorated with over four thousand diamonds.

The cake has been valued at £32 million which is around $52.7 million.

Can I be awful and say that I don't really like it? Wouldn't you be scared of choking on the diamonds?

And the design and icing...hmmm.

Give me a Cake Boss wedding cake any day...

And It's Not Just Because He's Cute, Italian And Loves His Family...

...although that doesn't hurt at all.

Buddy did make a 'one off' Wedding Cake that was worth $30 million (studded with diamonds) but it was a simple design and very elegant.

I'd rather have one of Buddy's 'ordinary' creations any day...who needs diamonds - just gimme cake!

Now that, (see picture of stunning cake to your right) my friends, is a Wedding Cake.

The man is seriously talented. There is a reason his cakes are all over Google Images and Pinterest. People just love his cakes. It's as simple as that.

You can spend hours on their website. I did - and if you're planning a wedding I would humbly suggest that you do too.

His cakes are works of art. And not a single diamond in sight.

Most Expensive Engagement Rings Ever. Beyonce's Is Worth $5 Million

He Liked It So He Put A Ring On It...(sorry - couldn't resist)

Jay Z (who is well known for his generosity and extravagance) popped the question to his honey with a ring designed by Lorraine Schwartz.

The flawless 18 carat diamond ring (which is set into a split shank made from platinum) came with a price tag of a cool $5 million. Traditionally, an engagement ring should cost the groom one months' salary - so that's probably about right then...

Beyonce revealed it to the breathlessly waiting world in September 2008, by which time the beautiful couple had already been wed for several weeks.

Beyonce's new husband might be extravagant but he's not stupid. He's had a copy of the ring made for his wife to wear while she performs on stage. The copy set him back $5,000 which, let's face it, is money down the back of the sofa to someone of his earning power. Nice thought though.

Imagine being in the crowd, watching Beyonce strut her fabulous stuff...and suddenly getting hit in the eye with a $5 million rock as it flies off her perfectly manicured hand. How would you find it in a crowd of thousands? How many people would hand it back? Heck, even the $5,000 copy would probably be impossible to retrieve.

Jay Z would have to wait for it to come up on eBay and buy it back...I hope he can Snipe.

You know where this is going...don't you

Paris Hilton's Engagement Ring - Worth A Cool $4.7 Million

In May 2005, Paris and Paris became engaged. That's Paris Hilton and Paris Latsis.

Both rich beyond the dreams of avarice...and both heirs so they're both going to get a lot richer. In the meantime, they're both socialites. Both living the dream.

To be fair, Paris Hilton has carved out a respectable career as a business woman. Her perfume endorsements alone are rumoured to have netted her around $1.5 billion...yes, billion! I think I need to sit down...

For ease of communcation, let's refer to the couple as Hilton and Latsis from now on.

Latsis sealed the deal with a bauble valued at $4.7 million.

Hilton alledgedly received two rings - an 'I love you' 21-carat canary diamond ring and the engagement ring which featured a 23 carat white diamond. It is said that the diamonds were bought from a private dealer and were set by a private designer.

Hilton called off the nuptuals four months later. It's believed she felt she was too young to settle down. Latis was a gentleman and was quoted as saying he would always love her. He refused to take back the engagement ring and Hilton later auctioned it to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

It went for less than half the price Latsis paid for it.

Money isn't everything...but it helps!

I couldn't resist closing this article with some wonderful quotes from Zsa Zsa Gabor. The indefatigable Zsa Zsa - aged 97 at the time of writing - was married an eye-watering nine times, to the following gentlemen!

Burhan Asaf Belge (1937–41)

Conrad Hilton (1942–47)

George Sanders (1949–54)

Herbert Hutner (1962–66)

Joshua S. Cosden, Jr. (1966–67)

Jack Ryan (1975–76)

Michael O'Hara (1976–83)

Felipe de Alba (1983; annulled)

Frederic Prinz von Anhalt (1986–present)

A man in love is incomplete until he has married. Then he's finished.

I have never hated a man enough to give his diamonds back.

I am a marvelous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man I keep his house.
