History of Wedding Cake Toppers

Classic elements offer great symbolism

Wedding cake toppers have not always necessarily provided wide-ranging possibilities for the bride and groom. Although the exact moment when cake toppers became popular is hard to establish, a number of historians recognize that it appeared to be during the early part of the nineteenth century. At that time, wedding cake toppers were basically limited to fresh flowers, hand-carved figurines symbolizing the bride and groom, gum paste flowers, hearts, bells or doves. The use of doves was especially significant, since doves are one of the few creatures who mate for life, making them a particularly appropriate choice to top a wedding cake.

Royal Newlyweds Take the Cake

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert are tops!

In 1840, the wedding involving England's Queen Victoria to Prince Albert propelled the popularity of wedding cake toppers into the mainstream, when likenesses of the royal couple appeared on their wedding cake, the top tier of which is shown here.

The entire cake, made by the Queen's Buckingham Palace Confectioner, Mr. John Maudett, was a gargantuan three hundred pounds and nine feet in diameter! A symbolic figure of Britannia stood over replicas of the bride and groom, blessing their union.

Middle-class and affluent brides-to-be of that time very quickly accepted the use of cake toppers as their own custom.

Manners and Marketing Motivate More Merchandise

I'd like to buy that wedding cake topper, please!

Soon after the First World War, two episodes happened which actually worked to push cake toppers into even greater use:

The first transpired in 1922, when Emily Post launched her must-have guide on etiquette and social matters, which included a detailed section on acceptable wedding protocol.

The second developed when major businesses and retail merchants, specifically Sears, Roebuck and Co., began large-scale marketing of reasonably-priced wedding cake toppers to the buying public. In 1927, the Sears catalog showed an extensive page of miniature wedding couples to be used as cake toppers. They were available for purchase as a pair and in lots of a hundred, expressly designed as party favors for the wedding attendees.

By the 1960s, Brides are Starting to Break Away From the Formal and Traditional

Just after World War II, sales of cake toppers boomed due to the myriad post-war weddings. These toppers continued to be quite basic and were considered to be a symbol of the newly-joined togetherness of the happy couple.

But the 1960s ushered in the beginning of a transition in American society, the evidence of which was felt even in the changing choices of wedding cake toppers.

Wedding couples began to desire more unique expressions of their style and interests, as shown in this vintage 1960s topper of a childlike bride and groom. Extremely popular, this style of topper was one of the factors which started the trend toward more custom wedding cake toppers.

Portrait of Happiness

For those seeking a personalized portrait topper, look again to Etsy for the answer. The artist utilizes your photographs, details and information for full-blown custom product.

When you have approved all the details, the portrait topper is cut from poplar wood and the design is burned onto the surface. Your names and wedding date are etched on the underside of the foundation's base, then painted with non-toxic paints.

Enhancements, such as a glittered sugar layer, can be added to highlight the bride's wedding gown. Eco-friendly finish coats, along the lines of beeswax, are also offered.

The topper shown is about 4-1/2" wide and 5"-6-1/2" tall, which will definitely fit on a six inch cake tier.
