Wedding Unity Candles

Updated on October 14, 2014

Wedding Unity Candle Ceremony

For those who are unfamiliar with this wonderful wedding tradition, I'd like to introduce you to the Wedding Unity Candle Ceremony. This beautiful ceremony, that may be part of your wedding ceremony, is another way to celebrate the joining of two families through marriage.

The unity ceremony takes place as part of the overall wedding ceremony, generally before rings are exchanged and the couple has been pronounced husband and wife.

The Unity Candle Ceremony itself consists of the bride and groom each lighting a larger center candle from their own lit tapers. These tapers may have first been lit by designated friends or family members, such as the mothers of the bride and groom, and then handed to the couple.

The symbolism is special and meaningful - As the flames are united, so are the families of the groom and the bride.

Thus, 3 candles are needed and are typically sold in sets such as the ones I suggest below:

--- 2 Tapered Candles

--- 1 Central Candle that is usually more ornate

In addition, I'll point you to informative articles on the Unity Ceremony for additional details. Just look for the sticky notes!
