~ Psalm 17 ~ Spiritual Journey From the Beginning To The End Of The Psalm ~
The Psalms are an exceptionally brilliant collection of godly wisdom! How splendidly marvelous they are, so wonderfully exuding a magnificently rich fragrant spiritual bouquet of wisdom that awakens the soul! Here the psalmist David makes a fervent, earnest plea and supplication to the Lord! He so yearns Divine Intervention!
This Psalm was written while David was once again being persecuted by Saul! It has been supposed that David was possibly in the wilderness of Moan. David is on one side of the mountain and Saul is on the other along with his men who were pursuing him with a vengeance! However his intentions were interrupted when a messenger brought Saul a notice that the Philistines were about to raid the land therefore he called his men back…
Saul’s son Jonathan genuinely loved David like a brother and they vowed an entered into a covenant with one another. They encouraged one another in their belief, trust and Faith in the Lord! Jonathan pledged his devoted loyalty to David! He sincerely looked forward to the day that David would actually rise to the throne and become King of Israel instead of his own father, King Saul! Who was the first King appointed by God. Jonathan and David mutually shared one of the deepest contiguously superb, brilliantly wonderful, relationships ever recorded in the Bible!
What is so very interesting is that his father, King Saul had become spiritually blinded and believed that his pursuit of David was justified. He had become impetuous, self centered and obsessively jealous of David’s achievements. He erroneously thought that the Lord was still with him, although the Prophet Samuel had told him otherwise! He was so greatly mistaken, and even went so far as to kill his own priests. Saul had become mentally and emotionally unstable!
Here we can learn a grand life lesson! It is important that we always check with the Lord first and make sure what we are doing or seeking is in His WILL... Thank God for Jesus Christ and His Holy Spirit that abides within us upon the profession of our Faith in HIM! He is the promised internal Comforter, Guide and Teacher! We must constantly pray amd seek His direction, keeping in mind that the Lord never tempts anyone! Nor does He condone anything that goes against His principles! Therefore we should always check our motives and agenda and make sure that we are not operating in self and what we are doing is of the Lord! Our purpose in life is to serve God not our own egos!
Saul’s jealousy, impulsiveness and insecurity began allowing his weaknesses to get the best of him. I mentioned before that he had stopped listening to the Prophet Samuel who was his anointed spiritual advisor! He disobeyed God! Despite Saul’s persecutions against David and seeking to kill him David still respected him! He even referred to Saul as “my lord the king” in I Samuel 24! Here we see that he humbly bowed and prostrated himself which was a customary display of respect. Still Saul persisted to rebel and sin against God voraciously pursuing David. Samuel had already boldly told King Saul: …For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the WORD of THE LORD, He has rejected you as king.” I Samuel 15.
There will be times when you are walking with the Lord that you will be misunderstood, mistreated, alienated, persecuted and your integrity questioned. Rest assured that the Lord knows! We must continually seek the Lord’s face and be strong yet humble and draw even closer to HIM!
Rebellion against God is serious and comes with consequences. Much of what is going on in our world today is because God’s principles for life and living are continually ignored! We must daily seek the face of the Lord! Yes! God truly is a forgiving God and His mercy endures forever! He knows what has happened, what is happening and what will happen… We serve an Omnipresent, Sovereign God who will NEVER lead us astray! He knows the measure of our faith and our character!
The anointing of the Lord will prepare us for His service! It sets us apart for Him! It is only through The LORD that “ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE!” Matthew 19.
We must ALWAYS Keep in mind that God is our Highest Authority!

“A Psalm of David” A Prayer of David
Theme: A plea for justice in the face of false accusations and persecution. David urges us to realize the TRUE goal of life – TO KNOW GOD – and the TRUE reward of life – to see GOD one day
This Psalm is an awe-inspiring prayer! It is an earnest distressing plea where David acknowledges his shortcomings! He is brutally honest with the Lord and courageously states his sincerity! His pain is so great that he asks the Lord to intervene and defend him! He knows that the Lord is totally aware of what is going on! No doubt he has a close relationship with the Lord!
We too can be encouraged and know we can boldly, yet humbly and respectfully approach the Lord without fear! God is The Spirit of TRUTH! He knows the intentions of our hearts as well as our limitations! It is very important to be honest and transparent with HIM! David’s righteous appeal was an expressed reflection that he is repentant and his lips are clean. “Hear, O LORD, my righteous plea; listen to my cry. Give ear to my prayer it does not rise from deceitful lips. May my vindication come from You; May Your eyes see what is right.”
David is not saying he has never sinned. His sin with Bathsheba is often brought to mind, when he was at a weak moment he succumbed to his flesh… No doubt God forgave him! His confidence is in the fact that he diligently seeks the Lord and spends time with Him! He readily repents and practices not speaking impulsively but instead disciplines himself by bridling his tongue. “Though You probe my heart and examine me at night, though You test me, You will find nothing; I have resolved that my mouth will not sin.”
David at this time is walking closely on the straight and narrow path! "My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not slipped.”
The Lord is David’s anchor! He eagerly prays in expectation of an answer asking the Lord to hear His prayer! Here David exudes a confidence which is birthed out of walking closely with the Lord. He is certain the Lord hears His prayers. “I call upon You, O GOD, for You WILL answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer.”
David has every reason to trust the Lord! He knows what it means to be loved by God! He has on many occasions been delivered out of extraordinary situations. He knows what it is like to have the “Favor!” of the LORD upon you! There is nothing greater than being in the Presence of the LORD! This is the same David who as a young lad slew the brutal, ferocious giant Goliath! With the help of the Lord he killed Goliath with a simple sling shot and a few stones! “Show the wonder of Your great LOVE, You who save by Your right hand those who take refuge in You from their foes.”
The Word teaches us that David: “was a man after God’s own heart!” There is no higher honor! We can always seek solace in the presence of The Almighty Omnipotent GOD! However, one must learn to relinquish any and everything and put Him first! Distance comes when we allow things and the cares of this world to come in between “Come close to God and He WILL come close to you!” James 4. The greatest lesson we can learn from David was that he grew to become devoted to righteousness! The “apple of the eye” is in reference to the pupil of the eye, the aperture located in the middle of the eye. It is where rays of light pass through! We so need the Light of the Lord in our lives daily! Most fowls keep their children safe by keeping them snuggled under their wings! We too can find safety in The Lord from the wicked! “KEEP me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings from the wicked who assail me, from my mortal enemies who surround me.”
We can expect spiritual warfare when we truly seek to live for the Lord! It can come from those we least expect! Keep in mind that Jesus was betrayed by Judas who was one of His many disciples. Often others will at times plot, set traps and seek to get close to us to destroy and or undermine our good intentions. They are often intimidated by our relationship with the Lord therefore they cannot really figure us out… They embrace the ways of the world! Judas was the weak link that satan used to attempt to destroy Jesus! He sold Jesus out for thirty pieces of silver… He had lost sight of the fact that what Jesus Christ had to offer was priceless!
Ask the LORD to open your spiritual eyes! PRAY FOR DISCERNMENT! Never compromise God’s principles to be accepted by anyone! “If God be for you, who can be against you!” Romans 8. Remember, Jesus was rejected by the very ones who should have stood “UP!” for HIM! “O LORD, by your hand SAVE me from such men. From men of this world whose reward is in this life.”
Draw close to the Lord! Spend time with Him each day! He is able to bring you through the tests and trials of life! In Him you can REJOICE! Thank God for Jesus Christ, His Word and His Holy Spirit! He is the Ultimate Father who wants what is best for each of us! GOD CAN & WILL FILL THE VOID IN YOUR LIFE! Through Him we have Eternal Life! “You still the hunger of those You cherish; their sons have plenty, and they store up wealth for their children.”
This Psalm concludes saying: “And I – in righteousness I WILL SEE YOUR FACE; when I awake, I WILL be SATISFIED with SEEING YOUR LIKENESS.”
