No doubt that David is comfortable in the presence of the Lord! This Psalm wonderfully and fervently attests to the indubitable, magnificent, sovereignty of the Lord! David once again captures our attention by boldly sharing his unwavering confidence! He steadfastly esteems the divine protection and grace he so values in the Lord! God is a God of Light!
The brilliance of His light can outshine and extinguish any darkness that attempts to surround us or hinder us! We on the other hand must exercise our faith by believing and implementing His Word within our lives. We must then take it a step further and step out on the faith He has instilled within us… Sickness, rejection, betrayal, misunderstandings, unhappiness, grief and death can all bring about fear. Fear wants to imprison us and keep us from being victorious! Fear is not of the Lord! Be cautious not fearful... “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”John 14 This is why it is so important to know God’s Word! We can trust God in any and every situation! God ‘s promises to “never leave nor forsake us” is quite true!
This Psalm offers us tremendous hope in the Lord! When we stand firm on God’s Word and do not waiver from His principles we can become confident. If we lack wisdom, we can ask Him for it! God’s Word is a sure foundation. It has an antidote to help ease any fear, anxiety or loneliness. You never have to fill alone once you truly have the Lord in your life! When we embrace His Word it ushers in security. God has given us a plethora of wonderful examples in His Word! We learned from the Apostle Paul; “if GOD be for us, who can be against us.” David demonstrates his faith and trust in the Lord. He is so confident that he stores up and provides the necessary provisions for his beloved son Solomon to build a marvelous Temple to honor the Lord! David lives victoriously in the Lord!
God wants us as believers to be mindful of His presence with us daily! He has provided His Word as ; “a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path!” Psalm 119.
Book of Praise Lesson Highlights
A Psalm of David
Theme: God offers Help for today and Hope for the future. Unwavering confidence in God is our antidote for fear and loneliness. As you draw close to the Lord you realize that you are never alone. We serve and Omnipresent God.
As we grow in the grace, knowledge, understanding and wisdom of the Word of God we begin to mature spiritually. Any doubts and fears we have can begin to become extinguished as we learn to trust God and step out on faith. The faith walk is not an easy walk! One must realistically expect the thorns and thistles of life that so often appear out of the blue. Just know that they are there to distract us from trusting God and try to get us off course. Stay on the Narrow Path! God will not “leave nor forsake us!” We on the other hand must learn to continually invite Him into the messiness of our lives. This is why we all need Jesus as Savior & Lord!
Once we truly accept Him into our hearts we are given the Comforter; His Holy Spirit! He is our precious internal Guide and Teacher to bring us to all Truth! “The LORD is my LIGHT and my SALVATION whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life of whom shall I be afraid!”
There is spiritual warfare going on all about us! The carnal mind is against God and His principles. It wants you to allow your doubts to overtake you. This can cause instability! Fear wants to envelope you and takes you away from truth! It wants you to become paralyzed and cause you to instead live fearfully, have anxiety, doubt yourself and walk in darkness and bondage to sin. Sin is anything that separates us from God! One cannot comprehend this without looking through the spiritual lens of your mind’s eye.
Jesus Christ Himself tells us that “HE is the LIGHT of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the LIGHT of life.”J ohn 18. David was a man of war. He was known for the many victorious battles he won. As a young lad the Philistine army came against Israel in the valley of Elah. One of their champion giant warriors named Goliath taunted the armies of Israel. He was a huge fellow, towering over nine feet tall.
The Israelites were challenged and were terribly afraid. No one wanted to come up against Goliath. David was not afraid and he volunteered to fight him. He valiantly slew the giant Goliath by using one of the five smooth stones he had selected from a nearby brook. He hit him in the forehead, with his sling and he fell dead. David then cut off Goliath’s head! He eventually became the greatest Prophet King to ever rule Israel. David had no doubt that the Lord was with him. He triumphs in the Lord time and time again! This is why he said; “When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. Though an army besieges me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.”
David loved the Lord and the tabernacle service. He was a gifted psalmist! He was exuberantly passionate in boldly outwardly describing his love for the Lord! His deep spiritual connection with the Lord is evident here! “One thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek HIM in HIS temple.”
There are one hundred and fifty (150) Psalms in the Bible. This 27th Psalm is reflective of the future coming of the Lord. Its theme denotes the coming of the Messiah. David is astutely versed in Scripture and is well aware of the presence of the Lord within his own life. History records that David was a rare breed, he had a pure heart! Here David exudes enormous confidence as he expresses his assurance in the Lord’s ability to protect him and keep him safe. David was a man of great courage! Any terror or apprehension was banished when he gave this marvelous sacrifice of praise! “For in the day of trouble HE will keep me safe in His dwelling; HE will hide in the shelter of HIS tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. Then my head will be exalted above the enemies that surround me; at His tabernacle I will sacrifice with shouts of "JOY” I will sing and make music to the LORD.” THANK YOU HEAVENLY FATHER!!!
It is important that we spend personal time with the Lord in His Word regularly. Even in our most difficult trials and test we can remain at peace when we stay focused and trust God! This is how we build a strong intimate up close and personal relationship with Him. This is what helps us to better recognize the voice of the Lord over the noise of the world. The Word teaches us to “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and everything else will be added...” Matthew 6. No doubt that the many successes in King David’s life were due to his trust and love of the Lord! It is so important that we too, “Be still and know that I am GOD…” We will further address this in Psalm 46. Here David tells us, “Hear my voice when I call, O LORD; be merciful to me and answer me. My heart says of You, Seek His face! Your face, LORD, will I seek”
David was well aware that one must acquire patience to wait upon the Lord! God is not a genie that we can simple conger up to immediately answer our requests! God is God! He is the great “I AM!” The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob! Above Him is no other! David himself was anointed to be king at age sixteen (16) . It was not until many years later and after much turmoil that he became king. He was actually thirty (30) years old before he became king. As king he was betrayed by some of his own family... Spiritual warfare can and will come in many forms! Waiting on God is not always easy! One must continually exercise patience and pray for spiritual discernment and guidance from above!
Life has a way of presenting many challenges, this has been true throughout the ages. Adam and Eve took it upon themeselves to disobey God. They then decided to invite adversity into life for mankind by doing so. We each have the choice to decide to invite God into our lives to help us walk in obedience! Having God in your life makes all the difference in the world. The difficult moments are there to make us stronger and resilient! Each challenge can serve to draw us closer to Him or cause us to respond in the flesh. It is His desire that we learn to lean and trust in Him! We too can walk victoriously!
Trials and challenges are or will be at some point a part of life. Whenever we do face trials God has an antidote as we go through them. The Book of James teaches us: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all…” James 1. This does not mean that we fake happiness. The point is that while we are going through our perspective and outlook will make a world of a difference. Tough times become time to learn and improve upon our coping skills. This is also when we can acquire more patience and a deeper trust in the Lord! Keep your focus upon the LORD!
We can learn invaluable life lessons as we embrace the fruit of God’s Spirit! The true meaning of life is so much deeper than what we can see in the natural! As we read the Word of God it is important to keep in mind that it is indeed all true and relevant. It is a Spiritual Goldmine of wisdom designed to light our path as we travel through this journey of life! The Word of God is not outdated as the misinformed often think; it is “alive!” It’s powerful! It takes the Holy Spirit to illuminate and unveil its vast immeasurable divine wealth of treasures! God does not want us to live in fear. God can and will in His time release us from people and situations that serve to hinder us… It is important to pray for discernment! God can make a way out of no way! He is truly Awesome! “Teach me Your way, O LORD; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.”
Come what may; I know without doubt; GOD WILL TAKE CARE OF YOU!"
This Psalm concludes saying: “I am confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD!”
