12 Types of Prayer from the Bible

Updated on October 16, 2016

I love studying the details of the Old Testament and New Testament. Prayer was very vital in the leaders of both Testaments. It is also very important in the life of Christians and in communicating with God. Here are different types of the prayers found in Bible.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The Psalms says that we are enter God's gates with thanksgiving. Moses and the people of Israel expressed their prayer of thanksgiving for God delivering them from Pharaoh and the Egyptian army.

Paul's prayer of thanksgiving displayed in the Corinth church, Philippi church and the church of Colossians, Thessolonians and to Timothy his dearly beloved son.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION, FORGIVENESS & REPENTANCE

We are to Confess our sins to God, ask for forgiveness for sin and turn away and repent to God. Here are examples in the Bible of incidents where these prayers were seen.

  • Moses prayed for forgiveness for Israel's sin of making a god out of gold.
  • In the book of Nehemiah first chapter, Nehemiah is pouring out his heart in confessing and repenting for the sins of Israel.
  • Chapter 9in Nehemiah describes Israel’s assembly of humble repentance
  • Psalm 51 entails David’s prayer of repentance for his sin with Bathsheba
  • Daniel’s prayer of confession, acknowledgment of a Great God, and confession of the wickedness of Israel, the departing from God’s laws, and not heeding to His prophets Voice, lack of obedience to His ways and laws.

PRAYER OF BLESSING

  • Jacob’s prays blessing over Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh.
  • Aaron and His Sons praying blessing on the People of Israel- The Lord bless you, keep you, The LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The LORD lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
  • Moses blesses the twelve tribes - Deuteronomy 33.
  • Jabez prayer of blessing
  • King Solomon prays blessing over the whole congregation of Israel before dedicating the temple of God.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

King Solomon dedicate the temple of the Lord to be a place where God will put his name and heed to the prayers of His servants, when Israel is defeated before their enemies, when there are times of famine, drought, when a stranger prays. This is a great prayer model for new church buildings.

PRAYER OF INTERCESSION

Intercession is praying earnestly for the a particular person or situation.

Abraham interceded for Sodom and Gomorrah. Moses interceded for the people of Israel with their grumblings and murmurings, when they sinned before the Lord. He also interceded for Miriam's healing of leprosy.

Anna, the prophetess, served the Lord with prayers and fastings night and day, a great example of an intercessor.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

This prayer is stated in Matthew 6 and it shows a model of how believers should pray to God.

Addressing God as Father, Holy is His Name, Honor His Will in Heaven and Earth, Ask for daily bread, asking forgiveness for our sins as we forgive those who wronged us

PRAYER OF AGREEMENT

In this prayer, two or more believers are in agreement for the specific thing being prayed for. Matthew 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

PRAYER TO MOVE MOUNTAINS

If you have obstacles, problems, circumstances that seem like mountains, that stand in the way of your view, then say to those mountains, be removed, and cast into the sea in the name of Jesus.

JESUS PRAYER FOR HIS DISCIPLES

The Last supper Jesus was with his disciples and prayed three specific things, to keep them from the evil, sanctify them through the Truth (Word of God) and that they be one even as He and the Father are one. You can pray this for yourself, other believers and new believers in the faith.

PRAYING IN THE SPIRIT (Praying in the Holy Ghost)

Praying in the Spirit is praying according to how the Holy Spirit lead you too vs having a long list of needs from the church. This is a different level of prayer. It is also praying in tongues. (Acts 2)

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints. (Ephesians 6:18)

What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also. (I Corinthians 14:15)

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost. Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. (Jude 1:20-21)

PRAYER OF FAITH

This prayer is based on James 5:15- the prayer of faith shall save the sick and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. This verse and the verses around this chapter gives instructions in taking care of the sick and praying the prayer of faith for those who are ill.
